The two U.S. children who swallowed Aqua Dot beads went into nonresponsive comas, commission spokesman Scott Wolfson said Wednesday afternoon.
In Australia, the toys were ordered off store shelves on Tuesday when officials learned that a 2-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl were hospitalized after swallowing the beads. A 19-month-old toddler also was being treated.

The toys don't actually contain GHB, but upon ingesting the beads they metabolize in the body to produce the substance. Way before it came to be known as a date rape drug, GHB was known to be produced in small doses within the body and by the natural process of fermentation.
I was surprised that a 10-year-old swallowed toys. I can see that happening with toddlers easily, but I had the whole "Toys are not food" thing down way before I was 10.

Aaah, okay. I just titled it what the article called it. Anyway I can change it?

Eh, it's close enough. I just figured I'd preemptively answer the "Who in their right mind uses GHB in a kid's toy?" question :)
By the way, one guess where the toys were manufactured.

Hey, you tell a 10 year old NOT to do something, and that's exactly what he/she does!

Those damn Chinese commies... They are secretly and quietly trying to kill us all with those faulty tires, lead containing toys, ghb contaminated toys, antibiotic catfish, deadly pet food, poisonous toothpaste... This is a conspiracy to kill all Americans...

i been thinkin' that myself lately...
Ya know - all kidding aside for a moment - I've kinda wondered if we're being intentionally used as a Chinese toxic waste dump.
I think the notion has some plausibility.

At the very least, they're figured out that we aren't paying a whole lot of attention to what we're buying.

i wasn't kiddin'. i'm seriously starting to think that too ted... nobody else is having these kinds of problems are they? or at least i haven't heard of any other countries banning imported chinese toys... we should probably do some testing on our electronic devices too...
but on the other hand, who's really doing this to us? think about it. it's not the chinese that say, hey let's make these toys for america. american companies BUY these products to resell them, or buy out factories over there to make the toys. the big guy with the money. he has a choice in where these things get made. yeah, labor's cheaper, but you're putting your future purchasers at risk. bad move in the long run. kill off the kids, you got no target market in 25 years, you tank.

Hopefully soon they will figure it out. Not wishing something bad on someone but maybe all these recalls will fix the problem. If we don't buy them maybe it will hurt them and then they have to start doing things right.

Walmart has a hand in all of this too...They insist companies sell to them at lower prices which in turn forces companies to move elsewhere for cheaper labor...Huffy bicycles is a good example. Since so many of us continue to support Walmart, then I guess we could say that part of the blame lies right at some of our own front doors.

There are very few Bicycles actually MADE in the USA today. Having some experience putting bikes together from different countries, I'd MUCH rather put together a bike made in China than one made in the USA. EVERY bike I've assembled that was made in the USA had misaligned parts and poor quality control on almost every step.
You can pay for top $$ labor in China and get a top $$ product. You can pay top $$ in the USA and still get a sh!tty product.

I saw these in Toys r Us the other day. My wife and I looked at it and said it looked kinda neat, but was a bit pricey. If I'd have known it contained drugs, I'd bought the lot and found some stupid kid to sell them to.

Aqua dots? WTF? If I had kids they would get a slinky, etch-a-sketch. jumprope, checkers game, pogo stick, etc....and if they complained, I would take it all to the salvation army. 10y/o swallowing a peice of plastic? What a dumba$$!

our 7 year old has been begging for them since they came out about a year ago ... the hubby and i have always thought it was a rather silly concept for a toy ... but ... who are we to decide? ya know??? anyways ... I'm happy that i told her no now ... it just silidifies the thought of no "made in China" products for them for Christmas ... or any other time for that matter ... IMO, i think they should boost our economy by bringing big factories back to our shores ... damn the cost ... i'd be willing to pay just about anything to *know* my children are safe from their play things ...

I've read a couple of places where people are concerned that is already happening, between morons wanting to buy them to get high and people who have kids with hearts set on these things and don't want to disappoint.

I was surprised one of the kids was that old. One story said she had a habit of chewing pens and the like, but it still seems like a weird thing to put in your mouth.
I had no idea these things were so popular. I'd never heard of them before. I remember some kind of little plastic beads that you had to bake in the oven when I was a kid which resulting in the same kind of plastic knickknacks, but that's it.

Ok, ya'll don't have to worry about this one anymore. Michael Jackson has purchased them all to remove them from the market place.

Watch out! Even the books are being recalled nowdays! Try to buy Mark Twain`s Huckleberry Finn, and you might find yourself being protested. For real. :(

Isn't that exaggerating just a little? Yeah, Huck's been protested when used in school curricula, but that's nothing new. I can't recall anyone having to face protesters in order to pick up a copy at Books-A-Million. Somehow I doubt chewing it will get you high, either.

Mine came last week and I saw the Aquadots in there. Surely they've pulled them from the shelves by now and also aren't selling them online. I would hope, anyway.
