Reading flowergirls thread about her daughter reminded me of an article I read in the clarion ledger this weekend. The article listed the top five mistakes women make at work and why it hurts their chances of success. #1 getting emotional #2 taking things personally #3 gossiping #4 talking about personal matters #5 "mothering".
I have to agree 100% with these, and have been guilty of some of these when I was younger. What do ya'll think about this?

We should add back-stabing and ladder climbing too. I worked with those women too.

I am or have been guilty of all of the above! Especially #2... I learned that one quick though. I've also learned rather quick like to keep my mouth shut. My new work attitude- come to work in a good mood as often as possible, do my job, don't worry about whether or not everyone else is in a bad mood, keep my mouth shut as much as possible, and leave work in a good mood as often as possible.

For the past year or so, I have worked in an office with all women, one man was there every once in a while. I wasn't sure what to expect at first--but I have to say that it was the best place. Yes, it was quite nurturing--but in a good way. Folks were pretty straight forward, so there wasn't a lot of gossip or back biting--maybe this was because there were only 7 of us? Dunno--but it was a great work environment. I also loved that I could dress how ever I wanted and didn't have to worry about what others would think...and we had pot lucks ALL THE TIME.

This is not exactly in line with this thread, but I was reading one of the advice columns in the HA last week, and there was a letter from a woman who had retired from her job after 20 years.
In the letter the woman was upset that she never heard from her "work friends" and thought since they were friends at work, the friendship would continue after she retired.
The advice columnist responded that it was likely a case of "out of sight out of mind," but it did make me think about my own experiences with "work friends" and how most of those "friendships" haven't continued.
Some have, but most haven't.
What about "work friendships?"

In my experience, letting emotions get of control & gossiping are the most detrimental. However, it is really a double edge sword for women because sometimes you are deemed "the b*tch if you can contain your emotions. Gossiping is poison in the workplace, it can turn a pleasant work enviroment into a nightmare very quickly.

All the woman have a bad thing about seducing me also. :)
I am on a soap box tonight after getting torqued off about FlowerGirl's baebae so I will continue here with the flames coming out of my ears.
First off I see absolutely NO problem with any of the 5 things mentioned in the first post.
I find it very welcome to be in a work situation with women because you can actually sit and resolve things that need to be done without all the posturing. Women are there to fix things and they can act like they are sitting in your living room or on your back porch while doing it. Now if they are not in a job suited to them just because they are a woman I have a beef with it, just like I have a beef with a man being put in a job just because he is a man. Vote for the best person for the job whether it's normal work or a political office.
Just stating the obvious but if you are in an all male work group especially at a corporate level, before the meeting is over you will have to crack at least a couple of people over the head or between the legs to establish who the werewolf is before you can get all the wannabes to simmah down and act like people that are there to reach a common goal.
I have found this different working with women. Sit and drink coffee or Dr Pepper or WHATEVER and everybody can lay it out on the table, act like normal people (for the most part but there are always men OR women those that walk around like they have a sexual cobb up their a$$), and just get the dang job done.
Throw the pig chip at me if you want but during this year we have had some little girl engineers working with us in residency who have been sincere, helpful to the nth degree and as normal and personable as you could ever hope someone to be. They were always ready to listen, listen, listen and offer whatever they could, do whatever helpful leg-work they could and although a few times they come up with some very state-the-obvious suggestions that sounded like they came out of a generic help book from college these girls were thought of as the gold monkeys of the job and we wouldn't trade them for anything.
In my humble opinion people should approach more in the work place like it is personal to them (in a good way) and act more serious about their work and can add that sincere touch as they go.
So, that's all I have to say about that.

Here's my story of gossiping, backstabbing women...I was an orthodontist assistant for a H'burg doctor. He was the only man in the office. The eldest woman there was 52 and I was the youngest at 26. We had some ladies that had been there since he opened his practice and thought they knew it all and could get away with anything. I was there to do my work and I kept to myself, so I was considered stuck up. That wasn't it at all though, I merely chose not to involve myself in their little "club". All of the gossiping and backstabbing kept everyone in turmoil all the time. Looking back on it, it's a wonder any work was ever done or that our patients weren't complaining. I finally had my feel and turned in my notice. Work is work, personal business is personal. The two should not intermingle. Admittedly though, I have had a rough year or so and I have allowed my emotions to rear their ugly head at work on occassion. I just simply close my door deal with it and then get back to business.

But, I will just leave you with one word that I made up over six years ago
sexretary..... And no, it wasn't me....
On second thought, a man that I once worked with said it best, Baloo, there are two kinds of women who work up here (or anywhere) those who are here to do their job and those who are here to try and find a man to take care of them....

I have to disagree with that one (not sure if you were serious or not)... but I gotsta have some men around. I get along better with men. Being around a bunch of bitties all day gets old!

I wasn't serious, because the most WONDERFUL years of my working life were spent working with nothing BUT men - "real" men - not pencil-pushing panty-waisted "sorta men" (pardon me while I bait caresalesguy, but . . )
However, I'm serious now, because unless you have something to add to the Toe Story . . .

I have almost eighty students this term, in four classes, and I don't have a girl like that as far as I can tell. My young women students all seem to have career goals beyond marriage. Although I think being a wife and mother is a noble career, probably the bedrock career of our culture, the realities of our world dictate that women be able to be self-supporting.
Maybe the girls looking for the MRS go to school somewhere else?

I have been a full time employee, mom, wife of a hubby who lives away from home to work and keeper of the farm for many, many years. I have had the opportunity to work with all men and all women. I thought that I would have a difficult time working with a staff of mostly women but have found it to be just the opposite. It has, for the most part been great.
I am one of those people tha cannot help but lead. I guess it is in my design. I work with a group that is really good about letting the rest of the crew do what they are good at and seeing leadership for just what it is. Of course, there have been exceptions to that. With those few, I tell them to either work as hard as I do or shut up. Works well, they quit.
As far as emotions, the work I do is emotional work and we embrace and encourage sharing each others feelings.
I sometimes miss working with men. I have found that I have to work a bit harder to prove myself when working with men, some more than others.
