I have had it with stray dogs in this neighborhood. No, wait, they are not really stray dogs. People are just to darn lazy to take care of their animals and don't care what they are up to. This morning was the second time in 3 days that I was attacked by a dog while I walked our pooch. As it was 5.30 a.m. I didn't see it coming in time and next thing I know it first attacks my dog and then when I tried to kick it away it tore into my shoe. Luckily I had a cup of hot coffee with me which I poured over its head. Startled it enough to let go and move away. My foot is bruised and the sneaker ruined. I have no idea whose dog it is. That's what you get with no-leash-laws. Lazy, stupid people who let their untrained, mean dogs attack other people and animals ( "we live in a free society, don't we?....blah! )
Sorry for the rant, nothing anyone here can do. I just felt like venting. However, if you are a believer in no-leash-law-let-doggie-roam-as-much-as-it-wants and you live close to me don't be surprised if your doggie ends up dead in a ditch because I will get a gun now. I can deal with dog S#@# all over my yard and I bite my tongue when they start yapping at 4.30 in the morning but once they go after me or my kids I will kill them!

I'm sorry that you had that experience. I try very hard to be a conscientious dog owner, but my neighbors make it difficult for me. I've got a good puppy who wants to do what she's supposed to. It's upsetting when other people and their pets (who were at one time good puppies who wanted to do right too) make it hard for us.
:(
(currently pissed that my neighbors across the street and the neighbor next door let their dogs run free when they go out to potty...which means they come to my porch and potty on my plants)

I understand completely. My subdivision is dog hades. Can't let the kids play outside and if you walk for exercise carry a big stick and pepper spray. We got a dog that lives down the road and is in my yard inside my fence to visit our dog. Digs holes and all to get inside the fence. I can't stand it anymore.

I was out riding my bike, back in high school, I was doing some 'cross-training' as they call it. I was way out Lynn Ray Rd outside Petal when a German Shepherd came after me.
I saw him coming in advance, and noticed noone at home where he came from. So I jumped of my bike, put it between me and him, and started hollering at him. I figured he wanted to play, but no, he wanted a piece of me. Didn't help. So, since I gave him a chance, I proceeded to beat the living s**t outta dat dog with my 10-speed bike. Yep, I'd hoist it up and slam it down on him. He finally had enough and just laid there, barely breathing. I realised I had about killed him. So, like a good sumaritan, I grabbed one of his legs and dragged his ass over into his yard and left him there. I don't know if his 'owners' ever found him, or if he made it, but I never saw him on that stretch of road again. Of course, my bike wheels were all bent up, so I had to walk back home............damn dog.........

This is a perfect example of why we have to have so much governmental control in our lives because some people are to f***ing stupid to keep their pets contained and take care of them. They have pets that they care so little about that they will risk letting them get hit by a car or scalded, beaten, poisoned, by sick people who get their kicks by harming animals. (No I'm not talking about defending yourself against an attack, so don't start with me today).

Our neighbor's dog was in heat a couple of weeks ago, and he refused to keep the dog locked up. He said he would, but maybe that was just to get my very irate wife off his front porch. Its a Jack-Russel, and by the look of some of the dogs that were trolling around here, she's gonna have some butt-ugly puppies.
Anyhow, back on topic. After the first dog fight in our front yard, we started shooting them with bb-guns. They all figured it out soon enough. Now they just run down the street then go into the neighbors yard.
Our big dog died about 2 months ago. I never realized how good of a job he did of keeping the other big dogs out. We had him behind a wireless electric fence, so he never left the yard.

First of all I was just joking, I love animals and would never harm one. Man some people can't take a joke,
But thanks eyescene I will take that lesson, along with the dog tooth I had to have removed from my arm when I was little and went to go pet a dog that was in our yard.

Now that I have calmed down just a wee bit I think I will go with the cattleprod idea ( might come in handy with the kids, too ). I realize that it is the owner's fault if dogs go wild. Unfortunately I cannot electrocute them as much as I'd like to so the dogs will have to take it. I just don't understand how inconsiderate some people are. Who, for crying out loud, lets his dogs ( 5 of them! ) out at 4.30 in the morning to let them yap away for the rest of the morning?? The owner doesn't care because he leaves for work and doesn't have to listen to it. People look at me funny because I pick up our dog's poo. My neighbor got upset with a motorcyclist because her dog ran into the street, caused an accident and, naturally, he wanted her to pay for the damage to his bike . She thought he should have paid for the vet bills because he hurt the dog :smt105. Sometimes I think I am in the twilight zone here.

One more question: my son just mentioned airsoft pistols ( leave it to a fifth-grader to know about weapons...). Would those work as a repellent? Do those pellets sting enough?
I looked at the cattle prods but a small pistol would be easier to carry.

Know what you mean.....in our neighbor hood, you can't put out your trash the night before pickup.....you have to wait until you hear the truck coming and rush to get it out or you will be picking it up in the yard for days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Scarlett, I've had that problem a couple of times.
I found that those 'Ultra' bags solved the problem - but these were small dogs - Boston Bull Terriers.

I tried to quote pooker and reply to his comment about putting out antifreeze, but somehow I was not allowed. I live in Forrest County and well understand that vicious dogs that are roaming around have to be dealt with...but not by putting out antifreeze. I know that he came back and said that it was a joke at first, but his last statement about the dog tooth made it seem like he was not serious.

My brother has had to shoot dogs on occasion that were a threat to my 80+ year old mother and to myself. There's not much choice when you call the sheriff's department and there is no leash law in the county. I really get upset when it is a neighbors dog and you have advised them about the problem and they refuse to acknowledge that their dog is a problem. What do you do? You can go down and file a complaint against your neighbor or...take care of the problem. It just seems that sometimes there is no clear answer

How in God's name has a leash law been avoided in Hattiesburg? Talk about backwoods yahoos. Isn't there a pepper spray or something you can carry with you to stop the dogs? You can pick up a neat ax handle at walmart cheap.

Cayanne pepper works well. Sprinke it on the plant. let them get a dose of that on their happy stick.

:smt009 I don't feel like arguing, the only reason I said that was because it was an inside joke the reason it was followed with a kekeke. E-language for joke. Trust me I work on cars alot, and everytime I come in my grandparents hand me the paper towels to clean up the oil and antifreeze I spilt to clean up the mess.
It has been my reasoning anyways to get a cat for the past few years, pretty sure I wouldn't harm a dog, can't have one. But a cat maybe, they come around all to often, and showing up more often only improves my dinfinate chances of one day maybe getting a kitty.
Alas noone understands me.

The last time the Lamar county sheriff deputy came around, it was because of the dog behind us. Whenever loose, it would lunge at people and dogs. vicious little bastard. Deputy started to get out of car, pepper sprayed dog, and blew back on him. He was pissed. Came over to my street and said next time you get a shot at him, take it.
Stray dogs are a nuisance. Dogs that are vicious to humans are another matter all together. My neighbor as well as many others, let their dogs roam. Mine is in a fence. Closest neighbor lets out her two dogs, goes back in house. They come to my fence and run back and forth barking until exhaustion. two feet either side of fence, no grass and sometimes mud. dirt is washing. exposing concrete around fence boards. Generally pissing me off to hear it. I yell at my dog, and she half-heartedly calls hers, so she knows i'm pissed.
One day i'm going to let mine out to "play". No leash law, right? Thinking about a trap door she could shoot right through and get it out of her system!!!!

I encounter so many dogs on the roads I take in and out of Petal that I've kinda stopped swerving out of their way. I'll slow down if one is in my path but I'm no longer going to put myself in harms-way, just because some idiot doesn't have the intelligence enough to lock-up his pet. I imagine it won't be long until I turn one of them into a speed bump but so-be-it. I'll feel bad afterwards briefly, but a dog owner who doesn't chain them up they MUST expect it at some point.
Mine aren't chained, but when they were puppies they'd stay in the yard. As soon as they started leaving the yard, we knew right away because they were bringing home things from the neighbors' yards-- little kids' shoes and stuff! So we put in our wireless fence. It works.

I have NEVER let my dogs run loose! I am not about to start now either. It is sad to see some of the beautiful dogs that are turned out to cause havoc in a neighborhood.
I treat my dogs like a small child...I want to know where they are and what they are doing..IF they get quiet, 9 times out of 10 they are into something they shouldn't be. I don't let BooBoo out unless I go out with her. She is either behind the fence or on a leash..no if's, and's or buts!
I don't let my dogs bother neighbors...I expect the same from them! It is called being a good neighbor. I have had to sign charges on a neighbor before, I would not hesitate to do it again.

We live just outside the Hattiesburg city area in Lamar county. It never even occured to us to check about leash laws before we moved in since it sure does not look like "country" here. We move an awful lot and we have never lived in a neighborhood that has absolutely no rules when it comes to animals, it's ridiculous.

People. What you are dealin' with here is a "failya' to communicate".
What has happened is that the sub-burbs about 10-15 years ago used to be in the "country" Now every tom, dick and harry that wants a 2 acre spread has built in these areas for one reason or another. Mainly to get out of the city. These people that have always lived there have prolly always had pets. So, they still have pets. It's hard to get people to change there ways. More crowding in what used to be the country....That's why I chose to move to the boon-docks..
I also hear that dogs don't like smelly feet. Just ask Hawkeyes's Shnauzer....

Yeah, didn't some USM instructor try to 'enforce' that policy with a pistol a while back? What ever came of that?
