This evening, on the radio, right durin' W'dam's news I heard a littering ad for Lamar county. I was thrilled. I had wanted to start a thread about this area the other day (area bein' Melba) because as I strolled home in the pick-up I passed a dude on a 4 wheeler and looked in my rear view mirror and saw him pitch a beer bottle in the ditch. This was no more than 50 feet from his own front yard. I think next weekend I will go clean up the roadway and just see how long it takes to get into the shape it's in now.:smt009
Thank you Lamar County for wanting to clean up your County. That's the first I have heard of a local county wanting to actually advertise to people that this is just not right. It's a beatiful county and it should set an example for the surrounding counties.:smt023
Thanks again,
Fish-Bait
P.S. For you Lazy Arses out there, "Pick it Up"

I wish I can catch the person throwing their beer bottles in my yard. Drives me crazy. Sure he goes for weeks without pitching one out (figure he is doing AA during this time or at least in jail) but then there they are again. I think the person must be young and not wanting to be caught with the bottles in his car but come on I get sick of picking them up.

They were picking up trash on 59 this week. It made me sick to see just how much GARBAGE folks throw out. It was in bags all along the highway. I know that our law enforcement have a lot of serious stuff to take care of, but I have yet to hear of anyone being ticketed for littering!

Remember the old "Woodsy" the Owl "Give a hoot, don`t pollute" commercials and my personal favorite the commercial with Iron Eyes Cody crying over the pollution? I wish they would bring those commercials out of retirement.

When you ride a bike on a public roadway, you find/see all kinds of stuff. I've got quite the tool collection from picking up things that fall off trucks, etc.
Then you get things that just make you wonder.
then, there's the occasional syringe lying on the roadside. If I had a sharps container and some gloves, I would have disposed of it. but I'm not touching it with my bare hands. BTW, this was on the leaf river bridge. I think they were probably trying to toss it over the bridge. So if you go swimming under the bridge (which I've seen lots of people do in the summertime), you might want to reconsider.

There is a corner near my house people have started dumping their crap at. I'm thinking of setting up a deer camera there to see who's doing it.

I've ticketed someone for it once, and it was mainly because of his bad attitude, otherwise he would have most likely received a warning.

There`s a certain backroad near my home that catches lots of dumping and I wish we could catch the culprits. Someone put up a sign recently naming it "garbage lane". Unfortunately, the county decided to pull down the attractive and accurate sign, and leave the problem unresolved. Maybe I should follow your lead. I wish the state (which is always "cracking down" on something) would "crack down" on illegal dumping and littering.

You know, I would rather them set fire to it than go dump it somewhere.
Are there any landfills in Lamar County? If people had a place that was somewhat convenient they would be more prone to take it there. I would just love to catch someone illegally dumping trash/garbage. I would make a total ass out of them.

The Forrest County Supervisors saw fit not to make everyone have garbage pick-up. That is why Enviro was the only company that would bid on the contract and that is why some folks dump their garbage rather than pay for pick-up

Well, Jones county sent warrants to about 1200 people I believe about 4-5 years ago. It didn't help. In Jones County, the way I understand it you have to pay for garbage service. You ought to look under some of the bridges out in the Ovett and Southern Jones area...It'll make you puke. Especially during huntin' season.
It's a problem all over. Another example of low class don't care people and they are fast teaching their low class kids the same thing.
Up North if you are caught littering it costs an arm and a leg to get loose and I think that it's time for that down here. If I remember correctly the sign on the Eisenhower Freeway said $2500 for littering. Wouldn't bother me a bit to see that down here and apply it to everything from dirt roads to interstates.

Yep. The problem is we don't have enough resources to enforce it (I think). You know Haley used this as a platform to me. I think other politicians need to get on board.
I like that idea of the deer cameras. One facing each way should be able to get a tag number even at night.
And folks just remember this, if you find some paperwork with somebodies name on it you can turn it in to local law enforcement. In a cosmic realitiy how do we know the person did it and their dog didn't? A name on paperwork is just too hard to explain and if nothing else if somebody has to waste a couple of hours at the station trying to get out of it they will prolly try to find a trash can the next time.

I soooo love it when I find mail......
Me too. I had a neighbor that utilized a spot on my property at the end of their road to place a garbage barrel for pick up day.
They started out good but soon there was junk on the ground all around it and I got a little testy.
I went out there a few times to pick it up and then had a great idea.
I told them their bank account numbers and where their daughter lived who was running from her husband and explained to them that is was pretty easy to pick their mail off the ground and know anything I cared to.
End of litter and end of garbage barrel.

So, who was runnin' from him?...the husband...
The girl had run off to live near her Aunt in Montgomery from a supposed abusive husband. They made a BIG deal of not telling any of us where she had gone until I laid all the paperwork on the table.

There is a landfill on gravel pit road behind lake serene grocery(98). I've used it several times.

There's also a place here in Purvis at the Industrial Park to dump off garbage/debris. Of course, you need to seperate it. They have a section for tires, wood, metal etc.

I think all of us have to pay for garbage service. In some places like Petal, I THINK it is included in the water bill so that everyone has to have garbage service. Even if you are not charged a fee, your tax money supports garbage pickup. In Forrest County, the supervisors had garbage companies bid on garbage pickup but did not require everyone in the county to take the service, therefore only one company placed a bid. That means that the folks that do not pay for the service have to do something with their garbage and it usually ends up dumped somewhere. You can't burn everything.
By the way, I was visiting a family member in a large city one day when I heard and saw the garbage trucks coming. I asked if she had put her garbage out, and she said no, it wasn't her day and that she used another company. Seems that they get to choose which company they want to do business with. I don't know if it was mandatory that they use a garbage service, but I do know that they have all kinds of regulations about dumping that are enforced, so there was no problem with dumping garbage everywhere.

I travel 21 miles to work, mostly over Lamar County roads. I'm accustomed to the hundreds of Walmart bags, beer bottles and cans, and the occasional TV or recliner. The usual roadkill such as 'possums, armadillos, and snakes don't ordinarily bother me....BUT, this morning I passed three deer carcasses (ribcage and other inedible parts) dumped beside the road...all in Lamar County. This is littering to the highest and most disgusting degree!

As an avid outdoorsman people of that nature truly disgust me. It gets worse as the season goes on. They are too lazy to bury or burn the remains of the animal. If caught these type of people need their hunting privileges revoked for a substantial amount of time.

Thanks, Fish-Bait, my sentiments exactly. I've seen whole carcasses minus the head. Must have been a really big buck and all they wanted was the mount. Buzzards will be gathered by time I leave work today and I'll have to dodge them like an obstacle course. I enjoy the outdoors too...there are 23 turkeys that feed in my field. Three are young jakes that I call "my boys". They are so much fun to watch. Good thing about them is they don't litter!

Oh you ain't tellin' me. Two years ago when we let a local farm the land he planted watermelons......deer love the watermelons...
On 3 occasions we found dead doe shot, left in place with just the backstraps cut out of them. That's when we called Game and Fish for some help. A little while later they believe they apprehened the perp, but if was at another location some 10 miles away if I remember correctly.:smt009

As part of the "blooding" after killing their first deer my grandsons must help skin and prepare the deer, go with their dad to the packing house, and then help to "properly dispose" of the carcass. This brings their attention to just what we are discussing. The eight year old, who has not yet been blooded, is very concious of this problem and calls our attention to every carcass we see. I wonder what excuse these guys have.
Back on the subject of littering...my son was ticketed in Lamar County for littering on prom night when a gum wrapper blew out the back of his pickup. The arresting officer told the JCJ that he used this as "probable cause" to stop him because it was prom night and he was trying to catch kids who were drinking. My son was not drinking so he ticketed him and he paid the fine. So, there is at least one instance in Lamar County where an individual was ticketed for littering, but this was way back in 1986!

Believe me CUPCAKE, I have a few rants on here about littering. Matter of fact I think it was the first thread I ever created on this forum. Anyways, instead of fining them I would like to see community service by cleaning up the roadways at their expense and properly disposing of littering. What bothers me more is illegal dumping. You know, where they just pull up to someones property and dump the old couch or fridge out of the back of the pick up. I would most likely end up in jail if I caught someone doing that on my property.....Somebody..maybe even myself would definitely tote and ass whipping. But by George they would know what they were in for.

Folks in Forrest County ARE NOT REQUIRED to have garbage pick up. Yes the Board of Supervisors did call for bids on the service, but the only company that would bid was Enviro BECAUSE OUR BOARD OF SUPERVISORS WOULD NOT REQUIRE EVERYONE IN THE COUNTY TO TAKE THE SERVICE. Our Enviro is paid every three months. I do not have to take the service and many people don't. Some of those that don't are the ones dumping their garbage anywhere and everywhere. I wish folks would call their supervisor before this comes up for bid again so that everyone would be require to have garbage pick up and then maybe we could get a better service...
