View Full Version : need Gulf Shores info please
Since this is the best place for info, I got a couple of questions for you.
My brother is going to Gulf Shores next week (bite me, Lee :-D). It's been years since he's been there and wants to know the best place that's reasonably priced to have a couple of beers and eat oysters on the half-shell. Also, is there a market around there where he can get a sack of oysters to take him with him?

We go to Orange Beach several times in the year. I am sure there is a reputable seafood dealer. Just don't go to those on 59 heading into GS. We always take the expressway and have found several seafood market on the beach front street. Hell, I am suffering from CRS, so I have no name to get to you! ....LOL

Tell him to start at www.gulfshores.com (http://www.gulfshores.com). It is the website for the area convention and tourism bureau. It might at least provide some leads. Last time I was there (about a month ago) I had dinner at Red's Seafood at San Roc Cay Marina and the food was very good. Although I have to admit that I chose the place because they sell Southern Pecan Beer. It is on the north side of the beach highway just before the Perdido Bay Bridge.

There's a place called the Crab Trap (http://www.fl-seafood.com/consumers/restaurants/crabtrap_escambia_rest.htm) near the AL/FL line on 182. It's on the Florida side. There's a bar and an outside patio. The prices are completely reasonable, and the Coronas are cold. I won't say there's not a better place to be found, but we've visited them at least once out of our last 3 trips down there, and I've always been happy about the service, food, and prices.

I was down there this past weekend and ate at Gino's. It was very good, and some of the locals we were there with said it's the best seafood around right now. It's about 1/2 mile on the left in Orange Beach before you cross the Perdido Pass bridge.

Tacky Jacks for breakfast!!
Calypso Joes is pretty good.
We went one year in Demember and the place was really dead and we LOVED it. We went to Lulu's when it was in the old location, which in my opinion it was much better, and the menu selection was very limited because they said they were shutting down till Feb. I am sure that is not the case now for that particular place.
Alot of folks like the Original Oyster House, it was just ok to me and crowded.

If I take a week and go down there, anybody know a good place to stay? Just me and Ian and a stack of books.

We like to get a 1 BR condo with Brett Robison. Phoenix X is our favorite but any of the Phoenix condo rentals are good. Phoenix X is near the Florida line. As far as Hotels go I am not sure. A friend of mine stays at The Island House. It is more upscale than the regular hotels. I have found we come out cheaper in a condo because you don't eat out as much and you have a washer and dryer in your unit.

Yep, it is. The last time we went was the weekend after labor day. At phoenix x a 3 night stay was maybe around 300-350 for a one bedroom. Balcony overlooking the beach...Wow, wish I were there now.

My problem is finding a place on the beach that will take dogs. Ian loves to run on the beach. I want to go a couple of days after Christmas and stay a week. Maybe some MH friends will drop by for some home cooking and relaxing too. But time is running out if I want to find something.
Much worth the drive to Foley Al. and go to Lamberts. It is VERY cool. Home of the throwed rolls. They will throw a roll to you if you ask for one-really low keyed dress. A tourist place to come to after leaving the beach. The wait after signing in is usually about 30 min. but really worth it. They serve tons of food and bring big pots of "pass arounds" for you too. Black-eyed peas, fried potatoes, okra and other vegatables are brought around and dipped on your plate. It is great. They have one in Sikeston Mo. if he goes through there too.. Ranges from 6.99-19.00 and the 19 is for a steak.

I love to ice skate, although I'm terrible at it.

I only tried it once when I lived in Charlotte, NC. My ankles swelled up the size of grapefruit. Don't care to do that again.

Mike, I haven't done it since my early twenties. I'd probably break my neck now! lol

That's how old I was. I held on to the rail the whole time. Was skating (sliding) along on the outside of the blades. Couldn't hold the blade straight. So my ankles swelled. I almost couldn't make it to the car. Give you a deep appreciation for hockey players.

Oh, Ian is your dog!! Is it the dog in your avatar? I have a golden named Abby and she looks just like your avatar. She was adopted when our beloved Cooper died of old age. I love Golden Retrievers!!
Maybe, renting a house would be a good idea. There is a website and I am going to have to think really hard to remember it.........Maybe someone will know what I am talking about,,,,,,,,,it is where owners rent to people without going through an agency. It is 4 letters and a dot com. I have looked at it before and maybe you can find a pet friendly place.

I didn't have a rail, was wearing a pair of men's skates that were too big and had the toes stuffed with socks, was on a frozen creek all by myself so if I broke something, I was in trouble! lol Had my share of falls and then some, but got back right up and tried again. As long as I went straight, I was okay, but try to turn and I was flat on my butt. After that, I'd go to that mall just north of New Orleans that has (had) a rink in the center. Never improved much but had fun. :)

Yeppo. Ian (Celtic, I think, for "God's Gracious Gift") is my 5 year old rescue Golden Retriever. Got him when he was about 10 months from Foothills Golden Retriever Rescue here in Greenville, SC. FHGGR.com. He's my constant companion, weather permitting. Sits up in the passenger seat of my car like a little man as we go down the road.:smt023

Well I guess since I grew up around there I could throw my 2 cents in.
The steamer is great.
It's tough to beat the Florabama for an all around good time.
Lulu's has good live music and isn't as crowded this time of year.
Lambert's is lame and overrated.
The Phoenix is what I consider to be a condo monstrosity. It's huge, obtrusive and completely blocks any view of the beach you might have had from the road.
For the above reason I much prefer Gulf Shores to Orange Beach.
The ice rink at the Wharf is temporary but I think it will be there through Christmas. They are having a big Christmas tree lighting celebration this weekend and its all free.
Dollfus, several of the real estate sites give you the option of searching specifically for pet friendly places. Meyers Real Estate is good and this time of year you can get some amazing deals. I would also consider a small house instead of a condo. If you're staying in Gulf Shores, I recommend the west end and a lot of places on the lagoon are nice and allow pets. Also if you're looking for a little more peace away from a lot of all that mess. Try the Plantation in Fort Morgan. It has everything you'd want but its more out of the way and very quiet, especially this time of year.

Everyone we know raves about Lamberts. I would not even think of going there and definately not wait. When I go to the beach, I like to find the places that are off the beaten path (hole in the wall places).
Lordy, you can get in trouble at Florabama...LOL lots of fun though!!
Steamer is and has always been our favorite place.
The last two times we have gone we have enjoyed hanging out under the bridge and watching the boats. The weekend after Labor Day was very quiet there. I found many pretty shells.
West Gulf Shores is too far away from everything. If you have been to Barnhills, you have been to Lamberts. Go to Pensacola during your trip, on Thursday mornings, early, that's when The Blue Angels practice and it's free. Lulu's is outside, quite warm with no air conditioning, flies, food is good if you can manage to get it before the flies. Best place to eat is Voyagers in Perdido Beach Resort.

Here is a small picture of the bridge we like to go to. The bathrooms are clean and it is peaceful. It is a State Park and I honestly can't remember the name. There is a new resort on the North side and I have heard it is very nice. It is probably a mile from Florabama and Phoenix X.
