I've only lived here a short while, so I can't comment on how things have changed.....I haven't noticed any negative results of the budget crisis yet....I've got some ideas on how to make the town better, but I'll share them with the appropriate people at the appropriate time.....

don't take it to heart, MMA... some times the written word sounds much harsher than the spoken word.
... and then again, some times NOT!
i'm all for sharing information, MMA. :smt023

Sorry I thought this was a place to share information, guess I was wrong.
I guess my earlier post was a bit unclear.....I don't know enough about the situation in Lumberton City Hall to speak intelligently about it.....Like many other small towns, Lumberton has some problems.....Many of the problems are curable....
I don't mind sharing information, but there are a lot of good people who still live and work in Lumberton, and the town has already received enough bad press without me spouting off anything else.....
Be glad to share more with you via PM, if you want to know my true feelings.....

Put me on the pm list also. I live here and am curious about all that.
I am from a small town, Prentiss and that mayor makes do with the budget can do. I live here now.
I know in talking with him one time about a city drainage ditch next to Mom's yard, I mentioned a remedy for a situation and he said that's too expensive. Would have fixed it and I thought, well just spend it. I had to remember they have a limited budget.by the way Mayor Dumas is a conservative, level type of personality and has had to put up with all kinds of potentially explosive situations. through his years of service.

Maybe Mayor Aaron Lott (R) should call Junior Eaves and his Bible and they could go down to Lumberton High School and lead a prayer service right there in the class room. Then they could provide health care for all the lil' chillins. Then they could get Jim Hood on the phone and they could "make State Farm pay" for Lumberton's shortfall.
Maybe Mayor Aaron Lott (R) was endorsing Shawn O'Hara and allowing him to be a budget adviser for the town.

Today's HA has a story about the Lumberton mayor traveling to Brazil on business connected to his private sector job.
The story noted the mayor has made several out-of-the-country trips this year in conjunction with his job.
As far as I can tell, these trips have nothing to do with city business and/or the current financial woes of the city, yet it seems to me the HA may be trying to suggest a connection.
The headline even reads "Lumberton Mayor in Brazil."

LUMBERTON MAYOR IN BRAZIL- That could be one of those movies, sort like the Crocodile Dundee movies.
Typical media, sensationalist stories.
That is why I like to get most of my real news from PRM or Ms.PTV.

Did anyone catch what the alderman said or mayor or whatever this morning on the WDAM morning edition? They can't even hold a meeting down there because of division about the City Clerk.
What is wrong with these people? Seriously, do we have a bunch of Sweet 16'er's down there holding office or what?

I saw that, too. My heart goes out to the citizens of Lumberton. They really need some people in those leadership positions who care about something besides their own egos.
At least that's what that segment on WDAM made it look like. I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm misled.

You know, I don't live there. I do live in Lamar County now though and this Gives Lamar County and well....even the State a black eye. I say just get rid of all of them and start over, but then again It's prolly only one or two giving the whole city a bad name.

I saw the piece...from what I saw the NEW mayor sure is an arrogant s.o. a gun! WHAT would it have hurt for the clerk to sit at the tables with the alderman....he just acted like an a**! He sure seemed to have some issues! It is a real shame for the people of Lumberton who do care! Had I voted for him the first time, I darn sure wouldn't vote for him come re-election! Just didn't like his snotty attitude.

One thing I don't understand about Lumberton is why they can't clean it up. It's such a cute little town, but if you drive down Hwy 11 from downtown Lumberton it looks horrible, with buildings falling down all over the place. It is still in city limits, so why can't city officials have enough pride to keep their city beautiful?

I didn't see the WDAM thing, as I don't live in the area anymore, but it's a damn shame about Lumberton....
With it's location, there is no reason why Lumberton shouldn't be a thriving small town.....Purvis is booming, Poplarville even has some stuff in it now....And there Lumberton sits, just rotting away....
A lot of great people in that town.....a lot of smart people in that town who could probably "lead" the city out of the dumps....However, those folks are just smart enough to know that they don't want to deal with the horde of idiots who try to run the show.....Therefore, a cycle of idiots seem to be working in and out of city hall....
It's a shame.....It used to be and could be a very nice, small community.....

short, semi-morse code answer....
Drug dealers don't want a nice looking town with jobs to interfere with their trade......and the drug dealer lobby has some pull down there....I'll just leave it at that....
However, I will say that the "good people" far outnumber the dope dealers/users.....unfortunately, the "good people" don't seem to have as much of a voice....
That, and the city administration is comprised mostly of idiots and retreds....which doesn't give businesses much stability or confidence...
I just watched it on the wdam site. That dude's a idiot.
Best thing that ever happened to The Lamar Christian School is the Poplarville Middle School.

Go to Poplarville, ask any parent of a middle schooler what it's like now. This ain't the pre Katrina Poplarville. Grandson would have been in 6th this year, no way. Kinda hard to imagine some of the tales coming from 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Find out for yourself, don't take anyone's word for it. You will be surprised.

Lwood, I watched that episode and it made totally no sense to me either. Sometimes WDAM doesn't tell the story very carefully, but this time it sounds like they didn't have much to work with.

I grew up in Lumberton. I still have a ton of family that live there. This is just my opinion, and no real reflection of my opinions on the family (love them!). Too many of the people in Lumberton don't care. They haven't cared in a long time. My mom grew up there and graduated from the school (back in the day). She said even then, Lumberton just wasn't right. The lunatics are running the asylum. People that don't care are electing their buddies, who also don't care. Very very few things have ever actually succeeded in that town. Most are gone within a year or two. The people that DO actually care work their asses off to get out of that place.
So, you have people living there who don't give a damn. These people are electing people who don't give a damn. No body cares, and nothing gets done. Lumberton is one of the snobbiest small towns around, yet it has noting to be snobby (or proud) about.

I know MMA would be better at this but I DO know one family who lives in Poplarville that used to play ball with one of my boys. They sacrificed and paid for thier kids to go to Lamar Christian rather than go to Poplarville. It has apparently changed quite a bit.

Y'all can say what you want about the city of Lumberton.....but Lumberton schools do remarkably well considering the backgrounds of many of the kids that get sent to them.....
Dennis Holder, the high school principal, is a man amongst men, and they should pay him as much money as he wants to be the principal, mayor, police chief, etc.....
He probably wouldn't want that headache, but if I were still a citizen of Lumberton, I would be begging him to take that city over.....He knows how to get people, adults and children, to work, and drug dealers would be scared to come outside of their huts...I can't say enough good things about this man....
Linda, the middle school principal, and Mason Smith, a high school history teacher, are great people who love kids more than any two people I have ever seen.....
With people like this and many others, Lumberton Schools have consistently over-performed for several years now.....Maybe they should give them a shot at the city....

And haven't they had the problem of some of the board of aldermen's kids being the ones arrested for dealing drugs and then the police being pressured to drop the charges? If the parents of the dope dealers are running the town, it is doomed. I think it might be time for the city to just unincorporate and allow the county to maintain law enforcement and other duties. Perhaps they could run it more competently than the present.

Somebody needs to step up to the plate. Us outsiders are gettin' tired of the crap down there. It's just STUPID. What we have here is a failure to communicate. You have adults acting like ATARI kids. She is the ringleader of the three black alderman. Any vote of consequence is always a black white issue. She is not a smart woman. She is vindictive. She drove out two Mayors in three years when the Mayors realized they could not get cooperation with the board. The only alderman who is worth a damn is Raybourn. He trully tries to work for his town but the cards are stacked against him. Elections are next year and I can see all but Raybourn voted out! Only then will that town begin to heal!
