23AndMe Will Decode Your DNA for $1,000 (http://www.wired.com/medtech/genetics/magazine/15-12/ff_genomics) So would you pay to have yours done?

Me? I would but I pretty much know some illness I will have I think without them testing me....like a stroke or diabetes as these were very much the norm in our family. But that don't mean I will, as my dad had non of those. So see that is the purpose to be tested so you know and can be prepared.

So would you pay to have yours done?

Fascinating. As mentioned in the article, the relationship between a genomic abnormality and a disease condition is much more complex. It almost always involves more than one gene as well as other factors. Being adopted, the ethnic side of this is interesting. I could see genetically my region of origin. That would be cool.
On the other hand, I keep thinking the insurance companies would LOVE to have this bit of info on you. They could spend a lifetime finding genetically based reasons to deny claims or coverage, as new disease-gene links are discovered. Just look through the data again. Am i cynical or just a realist? Read that HIPPA info.

If I was in my 20's or 30's? Yeah. Not now. I've already beaten my family heart disease history I think. I'm still waiting to see the outcome of my MRI. Mom died from complications from a stroke, so I'm anxious to see if I had a tia. Other than that, I'm healthy. Everything works. No artery blockage, heart is strong, albeit the size of a BB and cold and hard as marble. Heh heh heh.

i know within a reasonable certainty that i am a carrier for a genetic bone disorder + parkinsons. I would hate for my insurance to speculate my future based on the results of a test like this. Not only for me but for my kids as well.
