Larry Templeton thinks so. (http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071201/SPORTS030102/71201017)
And before anyone says anything about USM playing them if we had won the conference this year; it wouldn't happen. There's a clause in the Liberty Bowl agreement that prohibits two in-state teams from playing each other in the Liberty Bowl.

No, but there was a STRONG possibility (before the USM/Memphis game) that MSU and USM would have played in the GMAC Bowl. That would have happened if USM beat Mempho.

What's the other tie-in for GMAC? Bowling Green is in it, and they're not in the SEC.

I just want to see USM and Slippery Rock in a bowl game.

No, I'm afraid it wouldn't have (though I would love to see it). MSU is the #7 team in the SEC. That means they are guaranteed an SEC bowl tye in. They would've had to lose to UM and USM would've had to have beaten Memphis for this to even be a possiblity.

The Liberty Bowl did have MSU's logo on their website versus Central Florida but it's been removed now. MSU has rescheduled their basketball game for that day already.
I would say it's a done deal. Rumor is it has been a done deal for a week or two.

Was that Liberty Bowl clause added at the request of Ole Miss and Mississippi State so they wouldn't have to play Southern Miss?
:chicken::chicken:
Not that it's been an issue in recent years. Southern Miss and the Liberty Bowl, I mean. :(
Maybe next year. :prey:

It doesn't just apply to USM. Samething for UAB and the Bama schools, Florida and UCF, TN/Vandy and Memphis etc.
It was a stipulation requested by the SEC if I'm not mistaken though.

Congrats, CR....you'll love the Liberty Bowl!! Last time the Eagles played there, I got the pleasure of sitting next to and visiting with a half-drunk Sammy Winder.....
Maybe you'll get to sit next to Don Smith....oh wait...nevermind....

I am very happy for Coach Sylvester Croom and his players.
The man seems to have the Bulldogs on the right track. I like him!

C-USA requested it, but I believe that the SEC made C-USA request it.

A SEC lost to a C-USA team in a bowl game wouldn't be good for recruiting. A SEC loss to a same state C-USA opponent would be even worse for hometown prospects. :-D

When the SEC signed the agreement with the Liberty Bowl there was a post over on a Tennesee Rivals board that had a quote from Fulmer saying that Alabama and Ole Miss are the two who really pushed for that rule to be put in there. He said he wouldn't mind playing Memphis in the Liberty should they have the chance, and that LSU's athletic director and Auburns AD had mentioned something about having it written to where a team could choose to play a team from the same state in that game. Then Ole Miss got State on board with them and Bama and crushed the idea.
