I wonder how many are actually qualified for the job.

Terry Bowden certainly is. Haven't heard that name in years. He's the brother of Terry, Head Coach at Clemson. He was Auburn's head coach, but wasn't as successful as Auburn wanted. Tyrone Nix apparently has the experience to have a shot at a head coaching job. 10 years as an asst. with USM and a couple under Steve Spurrier. Terry would have some links into the heavily talented state of Florida, through his dad, I'd think. Probably quite a few who are qualified or deserve a shot at Head Coach. Maybe Lou Holtz wants a shot.:smt118

Some may be high school coaches or some may be position coaches or coordinators at small schools. Many aspiring head coaches are not necessarily ready and they know that they won't be considered. But they like to get their name out to build name recognition so that one day they might be considered for other jobs. Jimbo Fisher's name has been out there for a long time being considered for many jobs. By now, everyone knows who he is.

I'd like to see Jimbo Fisher or Terry Bowden get the job. They are the top 2 on my wish list.

IMO, we need a fresh approach to the football program.

Someone not affiliated with the Southern Miss program, past or present.

We need a head coach who will field an exciting, wide-open offense, who will recognize the legacy of the Nasty Bunch defense as well as recruit athletes who can carry on that legacy, and who will emphasize the importance of special teams.

We need a head coach who understands the necessity of cultivating fan support, with the big donors who underwrite part of his salary and the facilities as well as with the people who simply attend the games.

We need a head coach who acknowledges that "student" comes before "athlete," and supports those who are charged with keeping the student-athletes on a successful academic track.

Surely that person is out there.

Terry Bowden couldn't recruit when he was at Auburn. Why would you want someone that couldn't get it done at Auburn?

Fisher may or may not be a good one. Time will tell. But I would think he would be a good chance to take.

Im sure more than 3/4's are underqualified. But still i hope we pick a good one out of the few coaches that have potential.

Fisher may or may not be a good one. Time will tell. But I would think he would be a good chance to take.

Bowden was enduring one big time mulligan his final year at Auburn, but here were his previous records.

1993 11-0
1994 10-1-1
1995 8-4
1996 8-4
1997 10-3

The 1993 can arguably be passed off as Terry Bowden winning with Pat Dye's talent. Still, however, the Tigers went 5-5-1 in 1992 (got clobbered by Ole Miss 45-21 as I recall), and thus, it took a considerable coaching job on Bowden's part to pull off that undefeated season in '93, particularly with NCAA sanctions being imposed.

My bigger concern with Bowden is that he's been out of coaching so long, more so than his performance at Auburn, including the 1998 season.

CircusRide

Bowden's knock was that he could not recruit. Go ask the Auburn fans. Plus he tried filed a lawsuit against Auburn to try to keep them from firing him. PR nightmare.
I remember watching his teams and they were very soft & very unorganized too.
He had four years of Pat Dye's kids. 7-4 in the SEC isn't real strong from Auburn.
His ego is as big as his gut. Buster Brown is what they used to call him at Auburn.

I don't care who they get at this point for football.

Boyfriend wants :

1. Gary Barnett--(won at Northwestern and Colorado) --now an analyst for Fox. This must be my boyfriend's Christmas Wish List--dreaming.:laugh:--(my thoughts about him coming to USM)

2. Barry Alvarez--former Wisconsin coach now Athletic Director--coached under Hayden Frye at Iowa.. Barry won Big 10 titles at Wisconsin. (dreaming again) my thoughts again

3. Jimbo Fisher--former LSU offensive coordinator and now florida State offensive coordinator. But runor has it that he will be the next head coach at Florida State because Bobby bowden is stepping down soon.(:laugh: yep , my thoughts again on him coming here.)

4. Tyrone Nix--because he's the one we have the best chance of getting and keeping for 4 +years. Might need a little more seasoning in SEC. Not sure. Defensive coordinator at South Carolina under Steve Spurrier.

5. Terry Bowden--because he will find a way to recruit against Nick Saban, Tommy Tubberville, Croom and Nutt. The Auburn job was a learning experience for him.

Ok, I am changing my mind on who I would like to see coach here.

I guarantee these would fill the stands if you put the camera and microphone on them.

1. Kevin Costener WHY NOT? All I pay attention to now is Seymour
and half-time when I am bored.
2. Tom Selleck

3. Terry Bradshaw

"I would like to think that there are some out there who would be quite comfortable living in Hattiesburg on $500,000," Giannini said. "I think there a lot of good things that would make this an attractive place.
"There's the quality of life here and it's not like someone would have to come in and build a program. Southern Miss has a good reputation and a lot of tradition."
Giannini said Saturday that contract talk has not been part of the preliminary discussions or interviews he's conducted.
"We've talked about budgets, but it's still too early," Giannini said.

Dont get your hopes up!!! With a quote like that from the AD, it might not be who is qualified, but who will take the job!!!!:cry::cry:

See where Dicky G has interviewed Tim Hatten. Got nothing against Tim Hatten. But, if Tim Hatten, why not Norman Joseph (with a ton of D1 experience and four year head coaching experience)? Why not Steve Campbell at MGCCC, National Championship at DII level, Coordinator Experience at D1 level, SEC Assistant Experience, and now juco National Championship? Coast paper says Dubose was interviewed this weekend also.

A lot of guys went to the NFL from Bowden's tenure. He was dealt a crappy card when he took over. I think his tenure was quite impressive, especially considering the cards he was delt. His off field antic that got people mad at him was definately a big mistake, but who hasn't made mistakes?

Taken from another site on Fedora:

Fedora took OK State from 92nd on total offense the year before he joined the staff (324 ypg.) to 16th (409 ypg.) in 2006 and improved to 9th (484 ypg.) this season

Larry Fedora, Oklahoma State’s second-year offensive coordinator, is one of the brightest and most respected college coaches in the country.
The 16-year collegiate coaching veteran came to Oklahoma State after three seasons at the University of Florida, where he served as run game coordinator in 2002, perimeter game coordinator in 2003 and offensive coordinator in 2004. During those three seasons, Fedora also coached the running backs and receivers.

Fedora’s coaching resume began in 1986 as a graduate assistant at Austin College. He spent four seasons (1987-90) at Garland High School and then six seasons (1991-96) at Baylor coaching tight ends, wide receivers and running backs. Fedora then spent two seasons at Air Force (1997-98) coaching the passing game and receivers. He was at Middle Tennessee from 1999-01 as offensive coordinator before going to Florida prior to the 2002 season.

During his coaching tenure at the collegiate level, Fedora has coached 19 players who have received all-conference recognition, with OSU wide receiver D’Juan Woods and offensive lineman Corey Hilliard joining that list a year ago. Thirteen players tutored by Fedora have signed contracts in the National Football League, including Tyrone Calico, who was a second round pick by the Tennessee Titans, and wide receiver Chad Jackson, a second-round pick of the New England Patriots. Two Cowboys from Fedora’s 2005 offense, lineman Charlie Johnson (Indianapolis) and fullback Shawn Willis (San Diego), are currently on NFL rosters.

OSU’s offensive coordinator has coached in eight bowl games, including the 2004 Peach Bowl, 2004 Outback Bowl, 2003 Outback Bowl, 1998 Oahu Bowl, 1997 Las Vegas Bowl, 1994 Alamo Bowl, 1992 John Hancock Bowl and 1991 Copper Bowl.

He has had success at every stop along his career. His 2004 Florida offense ranked first in the SEC in six categories: passing offense (271.1 ypg), total offense (426.9 ypg), third-down conversion percentage (47.8), touchdown passes (29), pass attempts (407) and pass completions (243).

Fedora’s 2004 Florida offense was just the second in SEC history to feature the league’s top passer and top rusher, and it was the first in conference history to feature the top passer, top rusher, top receiver and top player in total offense.

In three seasons as Middle Tennessee’s offensive coordinator, Fedora produced one of the nation’s most prolific offenses. The Blue Raiders averaged 424 yards of total offense, 181 rushing yards and 31 points per game over three seasons.

In 2001, Middle Tennessee quarterback Wes Counts was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, while running back Dwon Hicks was named Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year. With Fedora as its offensive coordinator, Middle Tennessee broke 43 offensive school records and one NCAA record over three seasons.

As a player, Fedora was a wide receiver at Austin College (1981-84) and helped lead his team to an NAIA championship in 1981. He was Academic All- American in 1983 and honorable mention All-American in both 1983 and 1984.

Fedora was born September 10, 1962 in College Station, Texas and earned his bachelor’s degree from Austin College in 1985 and his Master’s from Austin College in 1986. He is married to the former Christi Wood and they have one son, Dillon, and three daughters, Sydney, Peyton and Hallie.

Just finished a long talk with Loslo and Big Collie Babe, my ace coon boons in Baton Rouge, who keep up with the football skinny on a full-time basis - when they are not eating at Louie's all-night cafe in Tiger Town or sneaking on to a golf course to play for free. Anyway...here's their morning scoop:

Larry Fedora is going to Houston if he wants the job. They are talking money now.

Jimbo Fisher is getting STRONG advice to stay put. He might end up as the HC at Clemson when all is said and done.

Tommy Bowden will be announced at Arkansas, possibly today.

Houston Nutt is taking ALL his Arkansas staff, lock-stock-and-barrell to Ole Miss. Ole Miss folks pissed off that he will not retain John Thompson, Tony Hughes, and Hugh Freeze. Hughes and Freeze are good guys, but Nutt is loyal to his guys. Thompson has worked for Nutt before - nuff said.

The "whole dang world" (quoting Big Collie Babe) is "..wondering what in the hell USM is doing!" Loslo and Collie Babe are still betting TY-RONE Nix, so I am too.

Paul Johnson of Navy will go to Georgia Tech in the next few days.

So Will Muschamp (if he wants to make a move this year) and Terry Bowden are still out there. Somebody is going to UCLA, and their job will open. There will also be a "domino effect" with the Arkansas-Clemson deal, unless Jimbo Fisher, a Coordinator, does get it.

Muschamp seems to fit the USM profile as indicated earlier, unless - as Big "Affirmative Action" Collie reminded me - it's definitely a "minority hire." But he's not going to wait long on them.

Nutt isn't bringing all of his staff. He just hired two coaches from ULM to be assistants. One of them is Ron Dickerson. Not sure how many remember the hit that Chris Mitchell made on him at the goal line at the end of the game to secure an Ole Miss win. I'm sure he may hear about it from some Ole Miss fans.

In light of this withdrawal, it will be interesting to see if Steve Spurrier fires Tyrone Nix from the South Carolina defensive coordinator position.

I think he was "talking up" Nix for the Southern Miss job with the hope Tyrone would get the job and Spurrier then wouldn't be faced with firing him.

It looks like it's down to Bowden & Fedora, IMO. I'm not sure Bowden really wants it but he might. I'm guessing Fedora is the next guy.
My source has been out of town the last week, so I'm just guessing.

Fisher is getting an extension from FSU today with a promise to be the next HC.
Tubberville just re-upped and his asst. all got raises.
Nix pulled out.
Ellis Johnson isn't really a candidate (I hope)
DuBose isn't really a candidate (I hope)
Campbell could get it if the others decline

Here's the email they sent me...:

"Thank you to all of you who have emailed Terry over the past week to ask him about coming to Southern Miss to coach. Obviously, the decision is not his ? but the Athletic Director, Richard Giannini’s. Terry is open to all possibilities ? he is ready and very excited to be coaching somewhere in the next few weeks.

If you would like to express your desire to have Terry considered for the Head Coaching position at Southern Miss, I would suggest giving Mr. Giannini a call ? (601) 266-5422.

Thanks again for taking the time to email Terry ? he really appreciates it.

USM will be pleased with Fedora if they can get him.....a good coach who has worked/earned his way up the coaching ladder from D-3 Austin College.....he can recruit and the couple of times I've met him, he seemed like a good guy.....I have a good friend on the OSU staff, and he has nothing but good things to say about him....
He's been mentioned for the Houston job too, and would probably take it over USM because of his Texas ties....

This is from the Clarion Ledger:

While wondering, if in times of trouble, one should just let it be?
---

Tyrone Nix is out.

Larry Fedora sounds as if he's in, as in interested enough to listen to what Southern Miss athletic director Richard Giannini has to say.

And the USM coaching search rolls along.

Nix, a former USM player and assistant coach who has spent the past three seasons as defensive coordinator at South Carolina, said Wednesday afternoon that he had withdrawn his name from consideration as a candidate for the Golden Eagles' coaching vacancy.

Nix, who interviewed with Giannini last week, did not say why he had removed himself from consideration.

Fedora, the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State, was interviewed Tuesday by Giannini in Enid, Okla., according to The Oklahoman. Fedora declined comment, but he has been considered a person of interest from the moment long-time USM coach Jeff Bower was forced to resign.

But Fedora's situation is interesting. According to The Oklahoman, the highly-regarded OC has a five-year contract that pays him $393,000. Last year, he turned down a chance to be the head coach at Rice and said no to the OC's job at Alabama. He also interviewed for the opening at Air Force and talked with Les Miles about the coordinator's job at LSU.

All this to say that Fedora seems to be dealing from a position of strength. He's making good money at a stable program in a strong BCS conference, running an offensive scheme that always will make him attractive to potential suitors. He very well may have liked what he reportedly heard Tuesday, and could be itching to be a head coach right now. But if he didn't and doesn't, he certainly doesn't need to rush into anything.
---

Also interviewed, per The Hattiesburg American: Gulf Coast Community College coach Steve Campbell.

He is at least the second JuCo coach Giannini has interviewed, joining Pearl River Community College coach Tim Hatten.

Hatten told The American that he considered himself a longshot, and Campbell probably is pulling on that same oar. But USM did itself a favor by at least talking to the head men at two national junior college powers who just happen to be sitting in its backyard.

New NCAA academic requirements are going to be sending even more of Mississippi's top-drawer players into the junior college ranks, at least for the short-term while students and their schools adjust to the new guidelines.

And USM thought enough of the two men running the programs where a fair share of those players will wind up to talk with them. That's a good thing, a very good thing.
---

First the media, and now the coaches of Conference USA, have declared USM sophomore linebacker Gerald McRath the best defensive player in the league this fall. No argument here.
