The Sporting News is reporting that Fedora has been hired, with a press conference Wednesday.

The Southern Miss athletic message boards are reporting the same.

However, the HA (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071211/SPORTS/71211022) says that according to a source close to the athletic department, the Fedora deal is close, but no contract has been signed.

I suspect his appointment will be immediate. We are already behind in the recruiting game, and I'm sure he has given notice to OSU. I believe he told Coach Gandy there that he would make himself available to coach their bowl game if the coach desired. In the meantime, I suspect he'll be running nonstop here on the phone and recruiting trail.

I'm sure someone like Mike Ditka or Jim Mora has said something similar in the past. Bobby Knight is college hoops would be a nice candidate as well.

I've said it a few times in the past year as well, but, fortunately, no one in the media was present :smt118

On the topic, at hand, I think Larry Fedora is an excellent hire. If he can bring in the recruits to execute his spread offense, there could be some very exciting days ahead for USM Football.

Dale, you are a good example of an Ole Miss graduate who recognizes that you can be loyal to your alma mater yet still support the local institutions of higher learning.

We need more folks to recognize that higher education is a significant component of the Pine Belt economy.

Perhaps Fedora can help generate more local support.

The University of Southern Miss?
Southern Miss University?

In reading one of the Southern Miss message boards yesterday, I saw that someone noted there are Big 12 Conference schools (specifically Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma) referred to as "U" (CU, KU, OU) even though their official names are "University of _____."

I know I've heard those references before and most likely that's where Fedora was coming from with Southern Miss University (after all, he has been coaching at a Big 12 school), although I'll admit it did rankle me a bit to hear it.

I got over it because a) I know he will get it right; and b) he is just so darn fedorable (that's for you, Doc!). :-D

Espn graded USM's coaching change.. Rest of the article (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=schlabach_mark&id=3158996)

Southern Miss

http://assets.espn.go.com/i/teamlogos/ncaa/med/trans/2572.gifThe process: Firing long-time coach Jeff Bower might have been the worst offseason coaching move by any school. Bower won 119 games in 17 seasons and put Southern Miss on the college football map. He led the Golden Eagles to 14 consecutive winning seasons and bowl games in 10 of the last 11 years. Bower was forced to resign after Southern Miss finished 7-5 in a season in which it was projected to compete for the Conference USA championship. Athletic director Richard Giannini felt Southern Miss needed new energy and direction. He interviewed Tyrone Nix, the former South Carolina defensive coordinator and Southern Miss player, who later withdrew from consideration when the search dragged into a second week. Giannini said he interviewed as many as 15 candidates for the job, including former Alabama coach Mike Dubose, Arkansas offensive coordinator David Lee, Oklahoma co-offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson and at least two junior college coaches. Giannini finally settled on Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Larry Fedora.
Grade: F

http://assets.espn.go.com/photo/2007/1217/ncf_ap_fedora_65.jpgThe hire: The Golden Eagles hired Fedora to put more pop into their offense and more fans in seats. Fedora, 45, has never been a college head coach. He previously was offensive coordinator at Florida. The Cowboys finished 6-6 this season and averaged 484 yards per game, ninth-best in Division I-A.
Grade: C

Final analysis: Bower had the Golden Eagles in position to challenge for the Conference USA championship seemingly every season. There's not much room for improvement for Fedora.
Grade: D

Another article from "Coaches Hot Seat" giving us a lot more credit

http://www.coacheshotseat.com/CoachingChangesAnalysis.htm

Southern Miss
Fired: Jeff Bower
Hired: Larry Fedora
Anyone attending a Southern Miss home game this past season could see that something was just not right. Watching Jeff Bower on the sidelines, it was obvious that he had lost his passion for the game, and the Southern Miss fans reflected the mood of their head coach as the Eagles put up their 6th season out of the last 7 with at least 5 losses. The status quo could not continue in Hattiesburg if Southern Miss hoped to keep their football program relevant even in Conference USA, and Jeff Bower was rightfully forced out after the regular season. With Bower out, Southern Miss main task was to hire someone that could bring some passion back to M. M. Roberts Stadium and with the hiring of Larry Fedora they did just that. We have had the opportunity to see a good bit of Oklahoma State play this season and if there is one thing that OSU can do it is score points. Certainly if OSU could have played some defense this year they would have had at least 3 or maybe 4 more wins, and thus it will be up to Fedora to not only bring his high-powered offense to Southern Miss, but also find someone to coach up the defense.

You have to give the people at Southern Miss a lot of credit for recognizing that their football program had stagnated, and that the one must thing they faced was to hire someone that could bring some excitement and passion to the head coaching position. They satisfied that one must with the hiring of Larry Fedora. Conference USA is a conference that Southern Miss has an opportunity to dominate with the amount of recruits that are within a 3 hour drive of Hattiesburg, and it is going to be great fun watching Larry Fedora put some fire back into the Southern Miss football program.

Quality of the Hire: 9
Opposing Coaches: Damn!

Coaches Hot Seat Bottom Line - Larry Fedora is a great hire for Southern Miss!

R1ZOOM
12-19-2007, 10:22 AM
and an excerpt from www.Scout.com....by Jamie Newberg, National Recruiting Analyst...

"...It may not seem like it now but Southern Miss made a big splash today with the hiring of Larry Fedora. I have been waiting the past few seasons for someone to go get Fedora. USM hired him away from Oklahoma State, where he served as the Cowboy offensive coordinator. Prior to his stay at Ok-State he was at the University of Florida under Ron Zook and Middle Tennessee State with Andy McCollum. Fedora has a very good offensive mind and is a sound coach on that side of the ball. He’s young, energetic and innovative. Fedora is also a very good recruiter that works hard on the recruiting front and is an excellent communicator. He’s been through the off the field recruiting wars in the SEC and Big 12. Fedora has strong ties to the South as well as the great state of Texas. Watch out for him and what he does at Southern Miss. Fedora has finally gotten his chance and is a coaching star in the making..."
