Do you have a special food that you only make at the holidays?
For me it's Blanket (pronounced "bon-ket") Its Dutch, I'm thinking that the spelling might have gotten skewed from years of the recipe being copied. But either way it's tasty! Its a pastry with a sweet almond filling. It takes two days to make though and about 4 hours to actually bake all of the rolls. I'm trying to find the ingredients down here (usually get it up north). Anyone know where to find almond paste?
My sister makes baklava (sp?) which is also a special treat.
I swear I can feel my hips getting fatter just thinking about those goodies!:pacman:

Usually Martha Washington. Iced box cake which has nilla wafers, pecans, and one more thing. I can't think of it right now. It is good.

I've never heard of that, but I like cake and nilla wafers and pecans so it must be tasty! :clap:
They should do a MH cookbook to raise money for the site...I know I'm always looking for another cookbook--espcially good ole southern ones!

Several years ago I decided to begin a new traditional Christmas meal at our house of a standing rib roast. I was tired of eating turkey and ham for a couple of months and thought we needed some beef.
Man, I'm getting hungry thinking about that right now.

My wife is baking and decorating cookies like crazy around here. I'm eating some of the 'not good enough's' now.

Orange cookies. I get orange cookies every Christmas. My mother made them and now my sis makes them for me. I have no idea how to make them but they have chopped pecans in them and orange zest. Killer with ice cold milk.

we eat seafood gumbo on Christmas Eve every year... there are family members that show up for that 1 meal that you don't see any other time of the year. I mean we literally only seeing them for a couple of hours every 365 days.

Ooooooooo...I did that one year. We had Christmas Eve with the Xboy's Sner, and Christmas Day with his Dad, turkey and ham both days. So, for New Years, I wanted to do something different. Which meant one year I did a standing rib roast. Another year I did a prime rib. Oh yum.

It's been three years since I last made fruit cake. Want to talk about a work-out. By the time you get all the fruit and the nuts into it, it takes two of you to stir the damn thing. Geesh. And then it has to sit in a cool, dark place for four weeks, while you sprinkle it with alcohol.
Soooooo good.

Those suckers are pretty expensive to make may I just add! My dad makes them and I'm sure this year is no exception.

I was actually thinking about making one this weekend...it wouldn't have nearly long enough to soak up the booze, but holy crow...when you start looking at the ingredients...2 pounds of candied cherries (leave the green ones out please), 2 pounds of candied pineapples, 1 pound of candied fruit, 4 pounds of raisins (2 each of golden and regular), 2 pounds of dates, 1.25 pounds of pecans....
(that actually makes three cakes)
