Tyrone Nix will be the defensive coordinator for new Ole Miss football coach Houston Nutt.
Ole Miss athletic director Pete Boone confirmed today that Nix had been hired by Nutt. Nutt is scheduled to have a news conference at 1:30 p.m. today in Oxford.

Doc, why would I blow a gasget? Unlike some, I've never been critical of Nix, and was impressed, for the most part, with USM's defense during his tenure. The only oddity I find in this is that Houston Nutt is hiring the guy whose defensive unit Darrin McFaddin set an SEC record in rushing yards against earlier in the season.

As an MSU fan.........I'm loving it!!! Nix is a sack of crap and he runs a gimmick defense that will not work in the SEC. Nix, Thompson, & the guy at USM all have bounced around the SEC so much for a reason. Their defenses do not work. They last a year or two wherever they go.

It'll be curious to see what he's paid at Mississippi compared to South Carolina. Wonder if it's a decrease in pay?

I've heard that rumor..but seen nothing to confirm it. Besides, if Spurrier was going to fire Nix, wouldn't he have already done it, much as was with the situation with Bower.
I understand South Carolina ranked 6th in the SEC this year in defense, and having to play such teams this year as Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Arkansas and Kentucky on your schedule...not to mention Clemson...that isn't all that bad. That's certainly markedly better than Ole Miss's defense under Orangutan/Thompson.

South Carolina was dead last in the SEC in rushing defense. That spells trouble.
They were tops in pass defense but when they're giving up almost 5 yards a carry, they won't see many passes. In fact, they had the fewest passes attempted against them.
They were 9th in the SEC in total defense. They gave up 378 yards per game.

Spurrier was attempting to manipulate the USM situation through the media in hopes that we would hire Nix so he could avoid firing him.
That's exactly how I read the situation!

That was scoring defense. They were 9th in total defense. Ole Miss was 12th, so he can't do any worse.

Would that make it a Hotty Toddy Oddity? ;)
