I got handed a cd from my instructor for next semester with powerpoints that we're to know on the first day of class. I think she's going to give a test on the first day. I have to go buy the book tomorrow so I can start studying this stuff next week...

Upper level and grad students are always smart to use their breaks to read ahead for the next semester. I've never had an instructor make an actual assignment, but it's common for grad school profs to post the upcoming term reading list, and expect you to have started on it by the first class.

She said the first test wouldn't be until the third week, but from what I understand, she calls roll sometimes by asking questions... I don't want to sit there and say, 'I don't know'. Also, sometimes quizzes are given that aren't considered 'tests', per se.

I had a junior Lit class that had one grade-the FINAL. You could sit the entire semester and fail the class on the last day. I thought wasn't fair but life ain't always fair. Will say I left the class with a 4.0 but it could have very well been a zero.
