‘Atonement’ leads Globes nominations (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22240036/)

Keira Knightley among film’s 7 nods, ‘Charlie Wilson’s War’ gets 5 nods

...The British historical romance “Atonement” led the competition for the Golden Globes with seven nominations Thursday, including best drama and acting honors for Keira Knightley and James McAvoy.

The foreign-policy romp “Charlie Wilson’s War” ran second to “Atonement” with five nominations. And among double nominees were Cate Blanchett, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Clint Eastwood and Eddie Vedder — the latter two receiving bids for song and score.

Besides “Atonement,” the best drama nominees for the 65th Golden Globes were the crime sagas “American Gangster,” “Eastern Promises” and “No Country for Old Men,” the inspirational college drama “The Great Debaters,” the legal drama “Michael Clayton” and the California oil-boom epic “There Will Be Blood.” Because of a tie in voting, seven dramatic nominees were picked, rather than the usual five....

Anyone seen any of these that have already been released?

Geez. I don't think I have heard of most of these.

I know that Atonement just opened, The Great Debaters opens Christmas, and I think "No Country for Old Men" opens then as well. In looking at the list, American Gangster (Denzel Washington), Eastern Promises and Michael Clayton (Clooney) sound vaguely familiar.

"No Country for Old Men" is in theaters now. I think it and "Atonement" are going to be fighting for the win. Both are excellent from what I've heard from people who have seen them, if not exactly "feel good" movies. The musical/comedy category is going to be a nightmare though - so many good movies with such different moods to them. For once "comedy" looks outnumbered by "musical."

Here (http://imdb.com/features/rto/2008/globes) is a clickable list of nominees that will show you release dates, casts, and everything else you might want to know.

Katherine Heigl got a nomination for Grey's Anatomy?!?! What kind of crack are they smoking? I could get that in past seasons, but this year has been so awful and her performance doesn't strike me as anything to write home about.

Really? She and Chandra Wilson are about the two best actresses on that show.

Is that saying much though?

They are, I just felt like Heigl hasn't been given a whole lot to work with this year. The George/Izzie thing is just painful to watch and so soap opera-ish and the acting just doesn't make it anymore believable. Not that she's a horrible actress or anything, but nothing stands out as award-worthy in my mind.

I thought the Golden Globes were voted on by regular people. How can they vote on something they've never seen, like "Charley Wilson's War"? It doesn't even open until like the 20th.

You're thinking of the People's Choice Awards. The Golden Globes are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and therefore are known for being kind of off the wall sometimes. Usually they are seen as a predictor of Oscar nominations, but there's always a few goofy choices in there. They do get screening DVDs, so they have had the opportunity to see the films nominated... assuming they did actually watch them.

I think the awards covers the entire year, not just this current television season.

True... I just wonder now what was on her "for consideration" tape that stood out so much. That category is so large in scope that she is still just an odd choice to me.

I agree. Sandra Oh's performance this year was much better.

It opened here in limited release on the 7th. It's already been shown in other countries and at all of the film festivals though.

Do you know if they are going to show it in a non-limited basis? I watched the trailer and am familiar with the book. I'd be interested in seeing it.

Oh yeah, it goes to wide release tomorrow. They just opened it early in select cities. Everything I've heard is very positive, especially with regard to moving the book to the screen.

Okay, but I cast a vote the other day on their website for best new TV comedy or something, and it said they were going to leave voting on some things open right up until the day of the show.

This isn't an insult, but rather an actual question to those of you who are interested in this: Why do you care? I have never understood why people watch award shows, especially when it is just people within their own industry patting each other on the back. I also don't get how you can pick a "winner" in something so subjective. If the winner was based on box office draw, that might seem more of an indicator of a movie people wanted to see, and therefore a "good" movie, considering that their job is to make money.

Again, this is an actual question, not an insult. I get that different people are interested in different things, but I see no appeal whatsoever in this.
