Click story here (http://www.wdam.com/Global/story.asp?S=7494549). I didn't realize there was so much bad blood.

The simmering feud between the incoming and outgoing sheriffs in Jones County may be about to hit the boiling point.

Newly elected sheriff Alex Hodge is taking issue with incumbent Larry Dykes' public release of what Hodge calls a personal letter naming those employees who would not be part of the new administration.

The list contains 28 names, including nine full-time deputies. The deputies include Jason Buxton, Howard Chandler, Max Davis, Matt Ishee, Darin McCreary, William McNeil, Carl Monk, Eddie Pitts, and Michael Tolbert.

In his letter, Hodge also told Dykes he was requesting two property audits: one before he takes office January 7, the other after he takes office.

Hodge said making the names public was both unnecessary and unprofessional. He said he sent the letter to Dykes "as a courtesy to him outlining those individuals who were not considered for hire. My only intent was to allow Sheriff Dykes sufficient time to recover any assigned property from the individuals."

Hodge concluded: "Sheriff Dykes has in no way extended himself to assist in the smooth transition of the sheriff's office. We are working through this process...."

Yep, it has been that way for years. The two hate each other. The rumor is that people voted for Dykes over Hodge years ago because they thought he to be the less corrupt one of the two. Now they are tired of Dykes and voted Hodge over him to see if he is indeed worse. Its a sad situation, that apprently those are the only two who want the job.

I know from personal experience that 4 of those names on that list really do need to go. I know people in the court system that cracked up laughing when that was released and they saw the names.

Well, I know one of them on the list and I hope he and his family will be OK.

All I can say is......"The Free State".........it is what it is until somebody with a big enough stick can change it. I personally know one name on that list that, if given a half of a stick and a nice budget that the dam Free State would in the end Join the frikken Union.

I get the impression Jones likes that "Free State" moniker.

After all, Jones County Junior College was the only two-year college in our state that did not change its name to "community college."

They can do that because they are the "Free State of Jones." :smt001

The incoming sheriff got really peeved when before the election I spoke out against him on the paper's message board. I still feel exactly the same way about him and would have if he got elected or not. If he gets in there and does a good job-- I'll have no problem saying so, and I hope it does go that way. But the transition would probably have not been bad had he not been so negative during the election and come into the office like he's king of the world. I think it was wrong for him to make all those people that have worked there for years re-apply for their jobs.....I'm sure that could have been handled in a better way. There are probably some that may have needed to go but it still could have been handled better. And what does a sheriff of a place as small as Jones County need a PR person for? Correct me if I'm wrong, but does Billy McGee or Danny Riegel have a PR person.....

Exactly! Another good question is WHY the City of Hburg needs "several" spokespersons? You would think the mayor doesn't have a mouth. As far as I know both McGee and Riegel both do their own publicity or some other high ranking officer in the dept. does....that is the way it should be IMO.

Sheriff McGee is the Forrest County Sheriffs spokesperson, he does all of his interviews, only if he's out of pocket does it move down the chain of command.

The way Larry Dykes ran his department was a national disgrace. The people of Jones County should be happy that he's out.

That is probably one of the reasons he's respected as well as he is. He doesn't need someone to make him look good or speak for him-- he does it all himself.
