HA story (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071228/NEWS01/71228022)

According to WDAM, Haley Barbour will hold two media events on Monday...one in Jackson and one on the Coast...to announce his choice for the appointment.

Since Barbour is making a public appearance on the Coast in conjunction with the announcement, speculation is the person tapped for the appointment is from south Mississippi.

If not Pickering, then who could it be?

If not Pickering, then who could it be?

Since one of the announcement places is Gulfport, I say Barbour has chosen someone from the Gulf Coast.....
1. Gulfport mayor Brent Warr OR
2. Businessman/Federal Reserve Board member Dave Dennis

WLOX reported at 6:30 that Brent Warr issued a statement saying that he has too much work to do with helping Gulfport rebuild from Katrina and he doesn't want the job.

Which, in reality, means that he was never considered for the appointment....what a jackass....

Reminds me of when coaches "remove their names from consideration" for head coaching positions.

(We saw that with Tyrone Nix in the recent Southern Miss coaching search.)

I once new a coach who was in the running for a head job at a college....He had asked me if I would go with him as an assistant if he got it.....I called him the day after his interview....he said "I pulled out. It wasn't a good fit..." Yeah right.....I'm sure they told him he wasn't a "good fit"....

According to Coast media accounts, Brent Warr and the Gulfport City Council often are not on the same page when it comes to city issues.

The perception is their differences have impeded Gulfport's post-Katrina recovery progress.

Dave Dennis is on record with the Sun-Herald on the coast saying that he is interested in the appointment.

Could it be Gene Taylor?

I question whether either of these candidates are the most electable in November...Mike Moore chickening out notwithstanding. With Pickering backing out...I would have considered Roger Wicker the most logical choice.

Since I was wrong in predicting it would be Pickering on this forum, I am hereby removing my name from consideration for any future political predictions, it's just not a good fit.:smt118

According to today's Sun-Herald (http://www.sunherald.com/business/story/270528.html), Dave Dennis is retiring from the Federal Reserve Board at the end of the year, which is tomorrow.

And tomorrow is when Haley Barbour is announcing the Senate appointment.

Hmmmm. Interesting timing of this story.

The money quote from Dennis' Federal Reserve boss, Bob Musso:
"He is a huge asset to the state of Mississippi and a great ambassador."

The Federal Reserve is actually the money counterfeiters put in charge of stealing America`s wealth, so I hope it isn`t anyone associated with such a dastardly organization.

I knew Mr. Dennis informally while I lived down there.....he is a very nice guy, well-respected by everyone that I know, very out going, very personable....I think he would make a very good Senator. Yet, I have to wonder, now....if it IS INDEED someone from the Gulf Coast, then why is the governor not STARTING his announcement there? HMMMMMM!?

I question whether either of these candidates are the most electable in November...Mike Moore chickening out notwithstanding. With Pickering backing out...I would have considered Roger Wicker the most logical choice.

Now, is Dave Dennis, like TDBeavers suggested, ELECTABLE? Just because he is not that well known at the moment does not mean he is not electable. I mean look at that guy who got elected with that silly, cute, or whatever you wanna call it commercial using that ole lady on the park bench. Mississippians put him in office on basically that commercial alone.....they knew NOTHING about him...he just happened to have cagillions of dollars to be on t.v. every time you turned it on, no matter what channel. The NAME is what stuck on election day, NOT HIS QUALIFICATIONS TO HOLD OFFICE! So, ELECTABLE is a term that is up for DEFINITION at this point.

But, I have to say, it will really surprise me if it is Roger Wicker....he is a nice guy, conservative and all that...but not that effective in D.C., and certainly not any more known among the average voter than say, Dave Dennis, or Captain Kangaroo, except up in North Mississippi. I would honestly think that Dave Dennis is better known on the Gulf Coast than Roger Wicker....(Capt. Kangaroo is probably better know than either of the other two.) All that to say---I think the appointment is still ANYONE'S GUESS---wide open! We shall know in a few hours.

The Clarion-Ledger (http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071231/NEWS/71231008&referrer=FRONTPAGECAROUSEL) says Haley Barbour is expected to name Roger Wicker to the Senate post.

If this is the case, my guess is the Coast announcement is primarily designed to introduce Wicker to the huge Republican base down there, plus the fact that the Coast is Trent Lott's home.

The Sun Herald (http://www.sunherald.com/news/breaking_news/story/271479.html) is reporting Wicker as well.

Now, will the Democrats encourage Gene Taylor to run for the Senate post in November?

Could be interesting.

Haley's on TV right now, and just made the Wicker appointment official.
