View Full Version : Who's the man?!?
This morning the Gov will be announcing Trent replacement. Who's it going to be? My money's on Shawn O'Hara.

The only chance the Democrats have to take this Senate seat is to convince Gene Taylor to run.
This means John Eaves, Wayne Dowdy, and the others mentioned as possible candidates will have to step aside and throw all of their support behind Taylor.
That is, if Gene Taylor decides to run. Our congressman marches to the beat of his own drum, but if he has any aspirations to run for the Senate, this is his time, his window of opportunity.
IMO, there could be enough Republican crossover voting and rural support to elect Taylor, provided the race is between Wicker and Taylor only.
The majority of this state's population lies south of I-20, yet the governor appointed someone who lives in the northeast corner of the state.
As Haley Barbour noted in the press conference, there have been only four U.S. Senators to represent Mississippi in his lifetime (60 years).
Only one of these senators, Trent Lott, was from south Mississippi.
My thoughts exactly. Mr. Wicker will have a hard time winning a state-wide election...tho Haley has pulled enough rabbits out of his hat over the years that I have to believe he's got another one shoved way up his sleeve, waiting until next fall to wriggle him free.
Likewise, Mr. Taylor will have a hard time appealing to voters north of Hattiesburg (thankfully). You guessed it: I'd vote for Mr. O'Hara over Gene-o. I've posted on that topic before.
Happy New Year everyone!!!

We definitely need someone from the south part of the state. I don't have any problems with what Wicker has done for his constituents, but the south part of the state has been short-changed for too long and I don't know if Wicker can put aside his northern bias to give the southern half the representation that it deserves.

It will be interesting to see how much time Wicker starts spending in south Mississippi, particularly on the Coast.
If you heard his comments at the announcement (which was televised), he talked quite a bit about south Mississippi, Katrina recovery, etc.
He may be a north Mississippi guy, but he knows he needs south Mississippi in November.
Sid Salter seems to think the November election will be between Wicker and Ronnie Musgrove. IMO, Musgrove cannot win...he has no "Washington" experience...and that will be the Republican's selling point for Wicker. On the other hand, Gene Taylor does have "Washington" experience.
Will the fact that the Presidential race is totally up for grabs help a Democratic candidate? Haley Barbour is likely banking on a big Mississippi voter turnout in November to vote "against" Hillary or Obama.
How can I be delicate about this? Hmmm....oh well, here goes...
Taylor's a New Orleans "yat" that won't identify with - or be identified with - any in our state's central/northern areas except maybe the scattered union block. Of course there are a number of voter blocks that will vote "D" on election day, even if it were Satan himself were the ticket.
At least Wicker's a clean cut Mississippian that at least LOOKS like somone that lives across the street or goes to church with you. He talks like we do too...I bet he even drives a truck. Or HAS driven a truck...
HA! Anyone think this will get 'em going?

I'd like to see Billy Magee run. I know that's a big jump from sheriff to US Senator, but if he were to run and win, that would be the biggest slap in the face that Barbour could possibly get. And I think he needs a slap in the face over this.
Also, this race is going to court anyway. Jim Hood disagrees with the way Barbour interprets the law, and I think he has a point. So this appointment may be moot anyway.
Columnist Sid Salter has opined a couple of times that Mr. Hood will most likely be unsuccessful with any challenge. I tend to agree.

If you remember we had Sheriff Larkin Smith from the coast that made the jump to US Representative until his plane crashed between Hattiesburg and the coast. It was his death that gave the opening to Gene Taylor for his being elected to the seat.
So no a jump like the one you are talking about is not unheard of... And I would hate to see him leave but I shudder at the thoughts of who will fill the shoes of Trent Lott...... And the vacancy left by Billy would be a had one to fill...

Dixie Tree Slayer, my dad graduated from FCAH in about 1933. Back then it had dormatories and you stayed there. He got his nickname (FLIT) there. Flit was a mosquito spray and there was one sprayer per floor. Mosquitoes were eating him alive one night and he stood in the middle of the hall screaming for the "FLIT!"

As predicted Jim Hood filed his election challenge to Barbour's decision. I made a call to the Hinds County Circuit Clerk's office and learned (shockingly) that the case wasn't assigned to Tomie Green (for once), but assigned to Bobby DeLaughter. It seems like Green (an ex Democrat State Legislator) and Chancery Judge Pat Wise (another known Democrat) always get these type of cases, with predictable results. DeLaughter is probably the least partisan of the four Circuit Judges in Hinds County, and hopefully, a correct, rather than political decision will be made.
