New Orleans once again is U.S. murder capital
... New Orleans registered 209 homicides last year, a nearly 30 percent increase from the 161 recorded in 2006.
The FBI's rankings for 2007 will not be out until much later in the year, but New Orleans' population is thought to be 295,450, which would mean a rate of about 71 homicides per 100,000 people.
Even the most generous population estimate in 2006 put the number of people in the city that year at 255,000.
That meant a real homicide rate of 63.5 per 100,000 residents in New Orleans. To compare that number with some other notoriously bloody cities, the rate for Gary, Ind., was 48.3 and Detroit's was 47.1....
That makes me sad. I love New Orleans. :smt009 Have been there both of the last two weekends.

Not sure that wouldn't double the murder rate.

Hmm, let's see.
1. Wipe out over half the folks with a flood.
2. Blame the feds for poor management.
3. Propose a 'chocolate' city.
4. Re-elect the 'do nothing' mayor.
5. Bring back less than 40% of the displaced.
6. Kill more of the folks that think they are
trying to 'rebuild' the city.
Yeah, they are trying to 'rebuild' the city's image.......
Imagine that :ohnoes:

Oh, c'mon everybody knows that the only thing holding New Orleans back from being the shining city on the hill (or in the hole) is that meanie Bush holdin' back all that money from Nagin cause he'd rather use it to legalize all his latino buddies rather help out our chocolate brothers. Lemme have a Hersheyllujah! brothas & sistas.
(Any above statements that may have been construed as insensitive, or racist were intended purely for the ridicule of Ray Nagin's openly racist attitude and blatantly asinine attempt at spinning his gaff.....white chocolate my ass.)

Tell me if I'm right...
I don't think it's innocent tourists getting killed...or regular, everyday, working people who live there.
I have a feeling it's thugs killing thugs--in neighborhoods we wouldn't dream of wandering around in. At least for the most part. Of course, there are always innocents who sadly get mixed up in that.

According to the article which I forgot to link (apparently), it's mostly drug & gang related.

The main problem being, that Katrina chased off the drug dealers client base so the competition for addicts is far more fierce. Houston however is experiencing a renaissance in their crack scene.

A friend of mine who has lived in Slidell all his life ( except for 6 months after Katrina when he was with wifes family in Vancouver Washington ) told me the other day that it was said on the news that the government is no longer paying for those that were evacuated to Houston to remain there. So now alot of them are coming back, but they do not want to live in N.O. They are moving the the northern shores of Lake Pontchatrain and into Slidell. He has been expecting this for a couple months as more and more people have moved into the Slidell area and things there have deteriorated. He just put his house up for sale and put a down payment on one back in Washington. He is trying to get out before the flood arrives.
