I saw something yesterday that I am curious about. There was a man walking along the road and close to him was a dog with a number painted on its side. It was also wearing a bright orange "collar" that looked like plastic. The dog was rather large and skinny but didn't look muscular. I really don't know if the dog belonged to the man or not, but it seemed to be following him. Why would a dog have a number painted on it's side?

I don't know unless there was some type of competition such as coon hunting or fox hunting... Did it seem to be a hound of some type? Hunting dogs are lean to help facilitate their running... weird... if you ask me...

Most likely the orange collar was so that hunters would not mistake it for a deer...

It could have been a hound of some kind. I thought it looked like a greyhound mix of some kind. The orange collar makes sense I guess for hunters. I just thought the number was weird.

I am still interested to know all about it myself... definitely weird... I used to keep an orange collar that also reflected light on mine in case he got close to the road

The number painted on the dog's side is used in fox or coyote hunts. It is not harmful to the dog and it is removed after the competition. The collar was probably a tracking collar so the guy could find his dog.

My uncle, an avid hunter, had all his hounds tattooed. That way if one got lost, he'd know and if found by someone else, he'd know if it was his.

The animal you just described is what is known in redneck terms to be a "High balled Walker Hound". I would elaborate further, but it just wouldn't sound right.:-D:kekeke:

Now you've got my curiosity up! By the way, the collar didn't look like a normal collar. It looked plastic. I saw this down the road from my house which has lots of woods around and we're not too far from the river. I know there's bobcats and foxes back there. I haven't seen a coyote in a while, but I do spot one now and then.

The hunts I am referring to are at specific locations that are fenced in and different from like hunting deer, rabbit, squirrel, etc and such..... It's the chase for this type of sport not the kill.... There are judges throughout the area and the dogs earns points for various things and the Owner wins money, prizes, plaques, etc....

Some folks will run deer with their fox hounds. I am not an expert in all of this by any means, but I will tell what I know from herein' stories around the deer camp. There are some folks out there that are have some really prized walker hounds. Some of these hounds only know of two things.
1. Eat the food they get and fight every other dog for it because you ain't gonna get much thus that's why they are so skinny.
2. When the tailgate drops and you pick up a scent you better run like hell and bark on every exhale.
These dogs are what I call "High Strung." They aren't or don't make good pets. They are crazy. They'll run 20 miles in a couple of hours if they can stay on a trail. We once tracked one from Janus all the way to downtown Brooklyn Ms in a very short while...It was simply amazing to find him in Brookly from where he exited the back of the pickup. It very well could have been a tracking collar you saw. These collars they put on Walker hounds have to be really tough as to not get torn off when they are running through thickets and what not.
I think the term "High Balled" comes from this.....When they run, their noses are pretty much closer to the ground than their ummm...you know what's...they are a very tall dog soooo.....they have "High you know what's."
That's the way I see it anyways..:-D

Hunters in DeSoto/Camp Shelby paint numbers on their deer dogs so if (when) they get lost, whoever finds them can return them to the numerous marked dog boxes set along side the roads. Usually, the numbers refer to the CB channel that the particular group of hunters utilize, so you can call them on their CB frequency and let them know where the dog is. The painted numbers allow the dog to be identified from a distance; some of these guys are touchy about letting other people handle their dogs.
The collar was probably a tracking collar, as these guys can invest a sizable chunk of money in their dogs, and don't want them to get lost. Your brother could tell you all about this, and probably add some extra humorous stories to boot.

When running dogs on a deer hunt, coyote hunt, etc. it's not unusual to paint your name or a number on your dogs to prevent theft & prove ownership later. the "Plastic" collar is a hunting collar, nothing unusual there. I wouldn't classify the dog with out seeing it but I've painted everything from Beagles to Blue ticks to red bones. It doesn't hurt the dog, and makes sure they get back to their rightful owner. You wouldn't believe the low lifes out there that will steal a good dog.

Thanks Jimmy for the info. That's probably what the number was. I don't think the collar was a tracking collar as I looked up pics online. It looked more like a big piece of orange plastic fastened around his neck, probably to keep the dog from being confused with a deer, although the dog looked nothing like a deer. By the way, the deer are back behind the house according to hubby's camera....they look like does though....one is a big one.

I guess I was just never meant to own dogs like that, lol. It sure was skinny! It wouldn't take long to get fat at my house. If I didn't feed it too much, my mom next door would make sure it got fattened up!

when I worked on the ranges at Camp Shelby, I would find one every now and then. there were boxes(pens) everywhere and I would just put them in a box. Sooner or later someone would come and get them. Got so that i kept a bag of food in my truck to feed the poor dogs. The hunters would be out with a tracking device that made a ham radio operator green with envy. The antennas were huge. Bout all the dogs had tracking collars on and numbers painted on them as well as the name and phone numbers of the owners on the collars.
