View Full Version : Buying a Bicycle anytime soon?

Had no idea where to start this thread. National? Sports? Outdoors? I don't know. But I decided to buy a bicycle to ride in the park and let Ian run with me. They are all made in CHINA! A few in Twiwan. Trek, Columbia, Diamondback. I refuse to buy from China. There's a chance a Cannondale is made in Pennsylvania. I'll check on that on tomorrow. I can't find a Schwinn dealer with a Schwinn in stock. The Sports Authority is 'sposed to have them but the one here doesn't. Even the internet won't tell you where the bikes are made. Has anyone but me decided to do without rather than buy anything that says: Made in China. I gave gift cards rather than buy from China, for Christmas. Of course they may buy from China but at least I won't know it.

Dollfus, as one who's assembled a few bikes, some from America and some from China, the Chinese bikes are MUCH better than the American bikes.
Some of Cannondale's frames are made in America, but all their parts are proprietary and are very expensive to repair...
How much do you want to spend?
give me a minute and let me check my bike forum and I'll get right back to you...

Might want to consider Itallian or other European made bikes.

Also note that just because a bike shop is listed as a 'Dealer' doesn't mean that they will actually have one of these bikes on hand for you to test ride.
Dealer status gives them the right to sell you that bike, but as with Moore's, they are a dealer of many, but mostly stock only Giant and Raleigh and some Diamondback, but are dealers of Fuji, which they don't normally stock, for example.
I got a couple of Raleighs....Seem to be pretty good bikes.

That sounds impressive. Dealer in Asheville, NC an hour from me. Are these $500 bikes or $3,000 bikes?

The China made bikes, like Raleighs and Giants are fine bikes. I really like my china Schwinn.
Raleighs carry the 'Designed in the USA' label.

Good lookin' bike. I just don't need a $2,000 bike. If I was even in my 30's, I go for it, or if my son, Michael was into cycling, at least I could pass down a fine bike to him. I'm not even sure my arthritic back will handle cycling. I'm going to try to get a good used bike. We have 6 or 7 bike shops here, so I know they could keep it in good condition. And with Hancappie being from Greenville, EVERYBODY cycles around town. So there should be plenty of used one too. But I love the look of the Waterford.:smt023 I got CB's list, so I know some brand names to look for. I figure if I buy a used bike made in China, I'm screwing China out of another sale. Heh heh heh.

Check your local Craig's list, dollfus. PM me your nearest city and I can look through them for you and let you know what I see and what I'd get.
Also, how tall are you? I think you'd prefer a comfort bike or hybrid based on your wanting to ride in the park.
