Hattiesburg man arrested on counterfeiting charge (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080109/NEWS01/80109045)

The arrest of Lashauchlam James Benn came after a two-month investigation started in November by the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office and the Lamar County Narcotics Unit, Rigel said.

Investigators of the United States Secret Service joined the case in December, Rigel said.

If convicted, Benn could get up to five years in a federal penitentiary, Rigel said.

Benn was arrested at West Hills Drive in Lamar County and booked into the Forrest County Regional Jail, Rigel said.

I wonder if he'll be able to bond out with cash?

How do you make money? I mean is there a recipe to follow or something? Food coloring? Honestly. All the good recipes are secret ones. I've been waiting on that money tree I bought to grow. So far nothing.

Used to a person would have to actually put some effort into making it, nowadays its done on computer printers.

I've yet to see the counterfeit bill in Hattiesburg that I couldn't spot as a counterfeit by looking at it.

The best ones are still flawed. The best one I ever saw made me hold it up to check for the watermark, which gave it away. It didn't look quite right, so I held it up, and it wasn't real.

One time, this kid tried to pass a $50 that looked like he'd printed it out in black and white and it was about 4/5 the size of a real bill. Spotted color marks from the dirt spots on the original bill he'd copied. It was sad, and funny... he took off running when he figured it was taking a bit too long to get his 'change' from the back of the store.

I've only had one person stick around long enough for the cops to arrive at the store and catch them with the bill. The lady said, "What's the problem?"... I said, as the officer was getting out of his car, "The problem is that the bill you gave me is counterfeit and you'll have to speak to that officer right there about it." She was pissed.

So is this the same guy who's been leaving the controversial cash around Perry County? I hear it's all over the place there.

More than likely, he used the same serial number on every bill...

My son had a counterfeit bill once. He and his buddies went to IHOP and he went to pay and the clerk said it was fake. Someone had given him change at some place and that is how he got it. He didn't have enough money to pay for his meal. He had to borrow money. It was ashame because he was just out that money.

Yeah, be careful when getting change for a larger bill. Some employees will try to pass them to you that way, and customers are a lot less alert to the possibilities of a counterfeit than a business. In fact, I know of one guy who gave a counterfeit $20 out as change after he had accidentally received it earlier in the day... I told him it was wrong to do that when he shared what he had done.

I've thought about it, giving it out to asshole customers, but I turned in ever counterfeit I ever received.

Young officer: "How did you determine it was counterfeit?"
Me: "I looked at it"
Young officer: "Oh, you mean there's no strip."
Me: "No, LOOK at it"
young officer: "I don't see it"
me: *sigh*
young officer: "You got one of them markin' pens?"
me: "Yes"
young officer: "Can I borrow it please to make sure it's counterfeit?"
me: "Yeah... but you can't see it? Look how bad it is."
young officer(after marking it with the pen): "Yeah, I guess it ain't real"
me: "Yeah"

I think that was during the worst of the Wynn times. I know they probably don't go over counterfeiting in police school. Why would they? But, c'mon...

Everytime I hear about a counterfieter, I think of years ago when I worked at Picayune P.D. One of the officers and his buddy whose daddy owned a big printing shop in town was making money hand over fist! Had been for awhile...THEY were GOOD! The feds said it was some of the best they had ever seen. :) Nobody at the p.d. had a clue they were doing such a thing until after the fact!

Now CB the thing is what if you were handed a counterfeit and didn't know you had just seen a counterfeit and didn't know it? That would make this statement a headache trying to figure this out without coffee... But I think you can figure out what I am trying to say...:smt023

One of the TV programs I've watched about counterfeiting showed some of the better work. I couldn't believe how good the bills looked. They had to chemically test the paper to determine it was counterfeit. Now, THAT'S a good bill!

What I mean by that is if it was counterfeit, I didn't catch it and the bank didn't catch it either... which means it was good enough to be passed as real money in the bank. Maybe I should have said that I've yet to lose money by trying to deposit a counterfeit bill that I didn't catch... er... something like that. You get what I'm saying... right?

In my experience, the counterfeiting really starts gearing up toward the end of each semester at USM.

Gotcha!!!
Now my brain is following you.... It just wasn't making the jump you had someone else following you to see as well... And the ladies at the bank are real good about "feeling" the counterfeit too...
I remember a Paul Harvey episode where this man would meticulously paint a counterfeit one dollar bill. He ended up going to jail and years later his work was sold as masterpieces. As I recall he was an older retired man and he was found out when his bills colors started running.... I think I would have painted a twenty at least so I could have some change for some tobacco!:smt023

I heard China prints almost as much US currency as the US mint does, and that the treasury just figures that amount into the amount circulating because the Chinese bills are so good it would be too hard to get them all out of circulation.

A few years back I worked for a printing co. and we got busted for counterfeiting. We didn't do it on purpose, we had a client who wanted some $10 coupons. We copied one half of one side of a $10 dollar bill & changed out the picture of Hamilton for a picture of the business owner.
If you folded the coupon in half it looked sort of like a $10 bill, the backside was just a coupon.
Apparently several of them got passed at a certain bar on Hwy 11. We ended up having to collect all the undistributed coupons, and my boss had to make good on the few that got passed and put up a bond for the ones that had been distributed in case any more got passed

So I was wondering. If you pay a hooker with counterfeit money, is that still a crime?
Wrong. Crack.
Oh. Soap. Well, that was my next guess.

Yep.
North Korea too.
Until China got into the business the best came from the middle east. Probably Iran and Syria.
They are so very good that Treasury Agents call 'em 'Super Notes'.
They actually consider the Chinese engravers to be better and more skilled than our own.
They are printed with the same Swiss made intaglio presses used by many governments to print specie and fiat bills - including our Bureau of Engraving and Printing. They have the same 'raised ink feel' of genuine bills.
The paper used is so close to the cotton/linen paper used that some pretty sophisticated forensics are required to prove them counterfeit.
They even use the same type color variable inks. I *think* it's called optically variable ink - or something like that.

HellBells.
Maybe we need to shut down our own presses and just pay the @#$% Chinese to print our money for us.

Soon the government will rule that hard cash is obsolete and it will be necessary for all to carry their debit cards and eventually all rely on the computer and an ID system... Seems as if revelations is beginning to come true...

While it's much more convenient to use $100 bills, whenever I need cash from the bank, I insist on only $20 bills, no matter the total amount of money I need to withdraw. At least that way, if I get any counterfeits passed to me as change, there'll probably only burn me for at most $10.
