Life in prison conviction upheld for man who stole leather coat (http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080110/NEWS03/80110033)
In 2005, Mark Dwayne Sumrell was convicted and sentenced in Washington County Circuit Court.
On Oct. 13, 2003, a security guard at a Kroger store in Greenville allegedly saw Sumrell remove a leather jacket from a rack. The security followed
Sumrell and saw him put on the jacket and noticed the price tag had been removed, according to court records.
After Sumrell approached the store exit without paying for the jacket, he was detained and later charged with shoplifting. Sumrell had two previous
shoplifting convictions and was charged with a third shoplifting offense, which is a felony.
After his conviction, he was sentenced to life in prison as a habitual offender.I didn't know Kroger sold leather coats.
That sounds kinda steep for shoplifting, though. The guy should be punished severely for shoplifting for the third time, but that still seems a little harsh.
