I can dispose of some old paint. Found about 8 gallons in my storage shed. Must be pretty old cause nothing around here is painted any of these colors. I have no clue where I can take it. I know I can buy some stuff to pour into the can and the paint will harden and then I can just throw it away but I think it only works on latex and the labels are pretty much gone on some this so I can't tell what it is. Any ideas?

I don't know. Maybe call a painter and see if they know. I guess painters are listed in the phonebook. Hmmmm. Maybe they are.

Sneak in an apt with a big dumpster... throw the paint in and don't worry about it.

Call one of the local refuse people....BFI....etc.....I think twice a year at the Forrest County multipurpose center they have a get rid of hazardous stuff day so you may want to call them. You might call Sherwin Williams also. I am sure they will be able to guide you where you need to go.

Please don't throw it in a dumpster.

okay, well I wasn't trying to make her do something dangerous- so what happens if you throw it away in a dumpster?

Or to say it in a different way. One of my favorite fishin' pounds down in Pascagoula(mind you there aren't many freshwater ponds in the city of Pascagoula) had a fishkill becomes some idiot ass self employed painter decided he would get rid of two 55 gallon drums of "used" paint thinner....It' killed of almost everything. It was a very small pond prolly no more than 1/4 acre if that. Well, if you throw the paint over in just any old dumpster that paint or some of the chemicals in it will eventually see it's way to some water, be it in the ground or some runoff from a landfill, now it's contaminated...it ain't pure...well, that contaminated water eventually makes it's way to a ditch, creek, river etc...out into the Sound and then out into the Gulf...all the time little creatures are bathin' in it....breathin' it in.....swallowin' it...and well...it will give a shrimp a tumor....Fish eats the shrimp....it gets a tumor.....hungry man catches the fish........cleans it and eats it.....now he's got a tumor....

You can insert contaminated for tumor, but I think you may get the picture.. Our water is the most precious thing we have....if we screw it up, well...we die.

According to the EPA of Ohio's website on paint disposal
http://www.epa.state.oh.us/pic/facts/hhwpaint.html

Disposing of Paint

Before you throw away paint, follow these steps to make disposal safer for the environment.
For small quantities:

Brush the leftover paint on cardboard or newspaper to use it. Allow the empty can to dry with the lid off; OR
Leave the paint in the can to dry by removing the lid. This should be done in a well-ventilated area protected from open flame, children, pets and rain. If the amount of paint is less than one-fourth of the container, the paint should be able to dry in the can. Stirring the paint every few days will speed up the drying. For large quantities:

Pour one-half inch layers of paint into a cardboard box lined with plastic. The paint should be allowed to dry before the next layer of paint is added. Adding an absorbent material, such as kitty litter or sawdust, will speed the drying process. For paint that has separated:

Pour the clear liquid off the top into a cardboard box lined with plastic. Add enough kitty litter or other absorbent material to absorb all the liquid. Let the remaining paint dry in the can by following the above instructions. Once dried, paint and painted surfaces may be disposed in the trash. Whenever setting a dried paint can out for trash collection, leave the lid off the can so the collector can see the paint is hardened.
Whatever process is used, proper ventilation is important. Paint fumes can be very hazardous to breathe and can be an explosion hazard.

Now the process of properly disposing paint should be cleared up now...

Call the appropriate, local office of your Solid Waste disposal provider. They can tell you the correct, legal way of disposing of hazardous waste.

If that fails, call the 800 number for the EPA. You may need to fill out some Hazmat forms.

Other than that? . . . You'd be amazed how colors come in and out of style.:-D

I thought that once paint was dried up, it was no problem. Now paint thinner, I can understand. But paint that has dried is a solid and not sure why it's a hazard.

Rem it probably aint at that point but I guess the government can say how they want it to be disposed of. I dont know I just dont want to kill any critters or get a case of cancer in our drinking water supply. I would make that call to EPA just to be on the safe side.

Drive down the highway about 3am and throw a gallon out about every 1/2 mile... make sure the lid's loose. Go back the next day and see your 'magic' on the road.

Somiss & Comments 2... were the groans really that necessary since I mentioned that i DIDN"T KNOW it was a hazard? I just thought that he didn't want to put it in his personal trash can at home.

No facilities exist in the immediate area for disposal of houshold hazardous waste. However, Habitat for Humanity has what is basically a thrift store for building materials. I think that it is located on the 42 bypass from Hattiesburg to Petal. You might check with them and see if they would take it. One person's trash is another's treasure.

Thanks for enlightening me... so when to I get that spanking? lolWell the PM you sent me with your address was garbled so I have to talk to Aaron about why this PM was so messed up and get him to fix it... And I know you weren't trying to be a bad girl but for some reason trouble finds you even when you sleep... Your statement "I know I need spankings to keep in line on occassion" makes me want to ask just how often will I need to administer your punishment? This is a commitment I will just have to buckle down and do for the good of the community!:-D Y'all bless my heart for doing this for everyone!

From the Department of Environmental Quality or DEQ in the state of Mississippi. This is of course specific to our great state...
Here you will also find how to dispose of antifreeze and other hazardous materials
http://www.deq.state.ms.us/MDEQ.nsf/page/Recycling_HouseholdHazardousWasteFAQs?OpenDocument

Household Hazardous Waste

Household hazardous waste includes Anti-freeze, Gasoline, Paints, Pesticides and Other Materials <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"> <tbody><tr valign="top"><td bgcolor="#fffff4" width="100%">How do I properly recycle/dispose of paint?</td></tr> </tbody></table>
There are several options available to the public on disposal of paint. These options are as follows:
Use all paint on the project at hand. This may mean putting on a third coat but it is better to do that than have the paint put in the garbage. Next, try to find someone who can use the paint. Places that may need paint could include a local theater group, school, Habitat for Humanity or other similar organization.
Take paint to a household hazardous waste collection event if one is held in the area or a permanent collection site if one has been established in the community (City of Jackson and Jackson County have permanent sites). Click here on Jackson Metro HHW (http://www.deq.state.ms.us/MDEQ.nsf/pdf/Recycling_JacksonHHWFacility//HHW.pdf?OpenElement)to view the tri-county household hazardous waste recycling facility servicing the Jackson Metro area.
If the above options are unavailable, allow latex or water based paints to sit out and evaporate leaving the pigments in the bottom of the can. After this has been done, then leave the top off the can and place the can(s) out with the garbage. Latex or oil-based paints can also be mixed with oil dry, saw dust, or kitty litter which will soak up the paint. The material can then be placed in a plastic bag and put in the garbage.
The last alternative is to store the paint for touch-ups or other projects. Although these are good intentions for keeping and storing paint, the paint is rarely used. If this option is used, follow these easy tips to make the paint last longer when it is finally needed. First clean the area of the paint top and cover so that there will be a good seal. Next cover the opening with one or two layers of plastic wrap. Then place the lid on securely so the paint doesn't leak. Finally, turn the paint can upside down!! This will create a tight seal, and will keep the paint fresh for the next time it is needed. As a final measure, mark on the paint can the room in the house where that color was used in the event it is actually used do touch-ups.To find out more about safe use, storage and disposal practices; dangers of improper disposal; and reduction and alternatives for household hazardous waste, click here on Guide to Household Hazardous Waste (http://www.deq.state.ms.us/MDEQ.nsf/page/Recycling_GuidetoHHW?OpenDocument).

Thanks SO much for that info. Maybe I'm not as dumb as I thought... Please everyone notice bullet number 3 on DTS' post.... as long as it's done properly, you CAN throw it away in the garbage if that's your only option.

But I do like Tully's idea of giving it to Habitat for Humanity.

The thing about that though is "usually" and if the garbage man see's it they will take it out. When you get home yo' paint cans will be settin' by the road. I would think the oil dry method if what I would recommend if you were goin' to do that. When them folks see a paint can in the garbage out it goes.
