As I was speaking to the jeweler who had resized my ring today,I found out how to clean it--ammonia and a soft brush such as a toothbrush. Cleaning silver with ammonia will get the dirt but not the tarnish. You need a silver cloth or silver cleaner. Do not use hot water since that can hurt the stones or dislodge them.

Also he mentioned that wearing chains, rings, earrings etc; in chlorinated water can damage it. The chlorine eats the alloys out of gold and will make it crumble easily. It is not good for silver either. Your gold has alloys in it unless it is 24K, which would be too soft to wear.

So, I will be taking my rings off to even wash my hands since I think we have a lot of chlorine in our water.

I have never been one to wear jewelry around the house, or swimming.

It all stays parked in the jewelry box until I put it on to go somewhere.

When I come home, it goes back in the jewelry box.

I remember years ago, a woman I knew growing up was hanging drapes in her house, and she lost her balance on the ladder/footstool on which she was standing.

Her wedding ring caught the curtain rod as she fell, and the force pulled off her finger.

I have a lot of Native American jewelry, a lot of it vintage or antique. I do not wear anything gold when I go on mission trips to Nicaragua with my church. That's when I wear my silver jewelry. Polishing silver jewelry is a PITA! I have found the neatest thing on QVC! I bought one of their jewelry keepers that have the anti tarnish lining. It will keep your jewelry tarnish free for 25-40 years! Of course you have to put the pieces in the keeper clean(it won't remove tarnish that is already there) but I love mine & it is worth every penny not to have to take my silver jewelry out & polish it before I leave for my trip. Believe me, I have enough to do without that! I gave my son's girlfriend a pair of sterling silver Affinity diamonds hoop earrings for Christmas & one of the keepers to keep them tarnish free. She loves it!:-D

My mother is a jewelry fanatic (and not the cheap kind, mind you). She has what she calls "swimming appropriate jewelry" and it's all gold and she's never had any problems with chlorinated water damaging any of it.

I'll have to refer my mom to this thread for sure.

Thanks!
