Films receive eight nods each; Cate Blanchett gets two nominations

...No Country for Old Men” and “There Will Be Blood” led with eight Academy Awards nominations each Tuesday, among them best picture and acting honors for Daniel Day-Lewis and Javier Bardem — but whether any actors would show up was in doubt because of the writers strike.

“No Country for Old Men,” a crime saga about a drug deal gone bad, “There Will Be Blood,” and a historical epic set in California’s oil boom years will compete for best picture against the melancholy romance “Atonement,” the pregnancy comedy “Juno” and the legal drama “Michael Clayton.”

“Atonement” and “Michael Clayton” trailed with seven nominations each, including best actor for George Clooney in the title role of “Clayton.” The lead players in “Atonement,” Keira Knightley and James McAvoy, were shut out on nominations, however, with teenager Saoirse Ronin the only performer nominated for that film, for supporting actress....

Other then hoping Ratatouille wins best animated film, I couldn't care less about any of the other nominations.

I am voting for Johnny Depp and Julie Christie as best actor/actress; Philip Seymour Hoffman and Cate Blanchett as best supporting actor/actress and Ratatouille and Juno as best (animated) movie. With my history of gambling success neither one of those choices will win anything though :laugh:

I want to see Persepolis. The graphic novel came out about the time that I left the classroom, so I didn't get a chance to use it. I did send it to a friend of mine, though, who has great success with it in his high school classes. Was reading this article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/18/AR2008011800957.html) about Marjane Satrapi. Interesting.

I haven't seen Juno yet, but a bunch of my coworkers have. They said it's pretty good. I heard the soundtrack is pretty decent, too.
