Airsoft is a Military simulation game, where players reenact battles, and dress up like soldiers with replica gear (sometimes real.) and replica guns. The airsoft guns are all 1:1 scale of their real steel counter part. The guns shoot at somewhat low velocity at rangers from 280-700 FPS. (700 being rare, and reserved for "snipers" only.) (FPS=Feet Per Second.) These airsoft guns shoot 6mm plastic bbs. The bbs only sting just a little bit, and for safety requirements you must wear full sealed (No shooting glasses.) goggles at all times. If you are ex military and lust for the fight again this could be the hobby for you. If you are interested in joining the military in the future it could be for you too! Maybe if your not either but still have that little kid inside you that likes to dress up like soldiers and play war.:smt023
ERT is the only airsoft team in hattiesburg (that I know of) and is recruiting for new members. The airsoft scene in Hattiesburg is relatively small compared to the rest of MS and we would love to have some new people get out and play our beloved hobby with us! ERT (Emergency Response Team.) is an all high school student team ranging from current ages 15-17. However, for older and younger alike, don't let that scare you away because there is no age limit as long as you are willing and dedicated enough to play. All we require is that you have a military set of camo (No hunting camo sorry.) and a mid, to high level AEG. (PM me for details.) If your interested in the team or just some general information about airsoft feel free to PM me or ERT's co leader (ERTgunner) with ANY questions!
Thanks for takin the time to read this. :smt023

What is the advantage of airsoft over paint ball? It seems that paintball would have the advantage of a clear marking indicating a kill rather than the he said she said of whether someone was hit with a non-marking projectile.

OR you can join the military, travel to far off distant lands, meet people of many different cultures and kill them. LOL Sorry, saw it on a tshirt once. But Im with
58ford, paintball seems more in line with actually being able to tell that someone has been hit.

What battles have you reenacted, or do you plan to reenact?
I've been to a couple of reenactments with these guys http://www.46thmsinf.org/ and was not only very impressed but had a great time.
I considered joining the 46th Mississippi, but I've never had the time.

That's a very common and good question. Yes, with paintball you get the clear site of the hit with the paint splatter, but many paintballers also get rid of the paint by brushing it off.
Paintball is usually associated with Speedball and what you see on the TV. Airsoft is a MILSIM sport, where we play more tactically and use real life manuevers and tactics to carry out objectives like "disarm the bomb." (fake) Rescue the downed Pilot etc.
Basically, if you want an adrenaline rush, go with paintball.
If your looking for a more tactically, yet equally fun (More in my opinion) game go with airsoft.
Also like I mentioned, all airsoft guns (Exept some at Wal-mart and places.) are 1:1 scale replica's of the real steel version. Paintball you have like a plumbing tube with a CO2 tank.
*EDIT* Also, 90% of airsofters I have played with have been very honest players.

Currently MSA, hasn't reenacted any battles. However there are many scenarios that replicate the Black Hawk Down scenario. Also, some neighboring states (Florida, not exactly neighbor) does WWII scenarios and make it as close to WWII as it can be.

I have played both Paintball and little Airsoft.
Paintball guns were bigger and clunky when I played, but they have scaled them down a bit since then, but they are limited in how small they can be by the size of the paintballs themselves. The paintballs are much bigger in size than airsoft bb's, horribly innaccurate at any range over 50 feet ( unless you have over $250 invested in a new barrel kit ). And as the original poster stated, paintball is usually played in a "speedball" field about half the size of a football field, with obstacles and what not to hid behind. A 7 vs 7 game will typically last less than 2 minutes. Most all paintball guns are semi-automatic unless someone can consistently pull the trigger 18 times a second.
There are some games of paintball geared around military simulations, but not many.
Airsoft is pretty much entirely millitary simulation. The guns look real. And some can fire in full auto. They are either spring loaded, battery powered, or air/gas powered. Some guns can be expensive from what I have seen.
Neither of them really hurt. Well they can, but to me they didn't, at least not for long. Usually when you hear the first couple of shots, the adrenaline gets to going and you only feel a bump when you get hit. There is body armor available if you are afraid of the pain. I have seen some at Wal-Mart and Gander Mountain.

Yea, but those can ruin higher end guns. (All the guns, but those are the only ones you need to worry about.)

"Some guns can be expensive from what I have seen. "
Yes some can be very expensive. For instance Medium grade AEGs (Automatic Electric Guns.) start at around $150. (Not to be confused with the crappy ones at stores that up the price.) Most high grade AEGs are about $300-400. However the ones built specifically for Military and LE (Law Enforcement.) training purposes can run you about $1000+ for just a normal m16. As always, upgrading your gun with a tighter, longer barrell, or a more powerful spring, better gears, etc. will always cost a pretty penny.

Mississippi Airsoft (http://www.mississippiairsoft.com) has now started up a Vietnam theme for certain games. IF you are interested in reenacting the Vietnam war please PM me for more details.

I got some youngins under my supervision that talk about these guns quite a bit. They claim that their dad accidently let one go off and it shot a hole through the ceiling of the carport at their house... I know carport ceilings are usually 1/8 1/4 inch plywood usually but still that must be a pretty powerful little jewel to penetrate that much wood.

It really just depends. It most cases guns will range from 280-400 FPS (Feet Per Second.) That of course is your standard rifleman. Snipers, for MSA have a max FPS at 550 FPS for safety reasons, they also have a minimum engagement distance that is greater than the rest of the players. (Snipers MED might be 100 feet while everyone elses is 20)
You can also find less powerful "airsoft guns" at Wal-Mart that shoot about 150 FPS, which are fun to mess around with, but not anything near what you would need for a Military Simulation game.
These of course shoot 6mm plastic bbs so it just stings a little when you get hit, and you can get blood if you are too close. I personally have never seen any of my bbs make holes in the carport ceiling, but I'm sure the right gun close enough would do the trick...Matter of fact...hold on I'm going to test. Just kidding.

Just to get an idea of what kind of guns he got, do you know what type of rifle or brand?
