Would anyone be interested in having a My Hattiesburg softball team?? I figure it should be coed. I really don't know anything about the leagues or anything like that, but would love to play. I have a good bat! :)

Embarrasingly, I know NOTHING of the sport... other than hitting the ball and going to base.

I'd be a bit interested, I think... I can't throw for sh!t, though. Can't really hit, either.

I get an "A" for Effort in my sports attempts. I tried Co-Ed Softball in the 11th grade and went to school the first day with a black eye. No joke, the ball hit the bat that I hadn't moved an inch, and popped me in the eye. One of my most embarassing moments. :kekeke:

Growing up I went to private schools and I guess they thought that softball was to dangerous for kids to play before reaching high school and we always played cabbage ball. Once we reached high school the girls did play softball but during school it was always cabbage ball. If y'all just want to play amongst each other, this might be a better option. Nobody would need a glove and the ball is easier to hit since it is bigger. Just a thought.

My hubby, EchoFourBravo, and I played on my company's co-ed team last year. I sucked, but had fun. E4B is actually really good.
We got our butts whipped at most every game. A lot of kids on college baseball and softball teams end up on these local league teams. Regular folk don't stand a chance.

aaron and i would play!! we love to play softball and haven't had the opportunity in a few years. the city has leagues in spring, summer and fall - i think. and i believe to form a team it is around $225.00 or $250.00. you provide your own equipment, jerseys, and people. so basically the fee is for entry. i have been told the number is 601.545.4624 for more information.

I'm ready to play and have some equipment, but really have no idea how to start a team or when the league starts.

They have a registration day where you go out and fill out a team form and get waivers for your team members. You need $250 for a team. Waivers don't have to be filled out then, but do have to be turned in before you play. You need your own ball for the game. Blue dot I think, they sell them around town.

I can still keep score and coach a base if needed. I miss softball SSSSOOOOOO bad. I use to play 4 nights a week. I started the co-ed league in Hattiesburg back in about 1990. We had a mens and womens league and I always played on a mans team when they were short a player so Mr. Potter told me to start a co-ed league and run it. Mitchell Williams was the first co-ed umpire we hired. GOD I miss softball. If you have a new team they also have different leagues to enter into according to your teams ability: A, B, C and D A is for good teams B =pretty good on down.

FIRECHIEF1

I will find out when we have to register by. I also have several bats and softballs. Do yall think we could come up with the 250 to register and money to buy shirts and a case of balls. first we have to know that we have enough men and women to make a team. The number has to be equal. we have to have 6men and 6women that will show up every game.

I'd like to be on a team, but I can't run.....I can catch though........as long as you throw the ball right to me. And I have an uncanny knack for determining exactly how wrong an umpire is.

How many people are on a softball team & how much is $250 & a case of balls divided up between them.
And, are we going into this with any intention of actually winning??

I broke my coachs ankle the very first practice we had years ago. She pitched it and I slammed it up the middle and she couldn't get out of the way fast enough. make SURE you have at LEAST 12-14 peeps on the team because i guarantee you... every week without fail you are goign to have someone(s) that cant show (call me sexist...its usually the girls)

take this from someone who ran two teams for two seasons

Remington
04-02-2008, 02:05 PM
Count me as one guy who can always show up. Need outfielders, though. Normally in softball, most balls are hit to the outfield or hard grounders that get through. So need people in the outfield who can run and throw the ball back in. I messed my rotator cuff several years ago and can only thrown half side arm and no longer over the top. I can play third, but not enough range for SS or 2nd. One thing about infield, at SS or 2nd, you can play back but at 3rd, 1st or pitching, you can get eat up by a hard grounder or a line drive. At 1st, you need to stay close enough that you can cover the bag and if infield arms aren't great, might have to dig some.

I tried pitching one time and a guy hit a shot right back at me and only had enough time to move glove about a foot to catch it. Any more than that and I wouldn't have been fast enough and I would have got nailed. That scared me into not wanting to pitch anymore. When I did after that, I would pitch and start back pedaling.

Who do I get the money to?? (I am assuming I'll eventually get paid back by those who join. :))

I beg to differ on the 'girls' part.

We organized 2 teams at our company last year.
A co-ed team of mostly girls, and a men's team.
Our co-ed team made it to all our games.
Our men's team forfeited EVERY single game due to not enough players showing up.

Better get enough girls to play, I say......they're reliable. :smt023

As it stands, we need a few more males and especially a few more females to say we have a team. I suppose it's time to start recruiting some of the quieter posters.....or find some ringers! Are there summer and fall leagues?? That will be ok. It is sort of late to get the old arms in shape. I would rather start a month before season started to get my arm back in shape. Well, in the meantime, maybe some MHer's can get together and throw the ball some, hit the ball some, catch the ball some, and get in some semblance of shape. At least in my case. Then we can see who can play what position and what positions we need to recruit. Someone can post about how much fun we had and others will want to join the team. Or we can talk about how bad we sucked and cancel the whole thing!! :D

I do really want to get out and do something. I'm not getting near enough exercise.

XC9 was harping on me last night at the bowling center about me playing. Let's see, other than working nights, being oveweight and hopefully getting my knee replacement this summer, there's no reason for me not to come out of retirement.

I mean I have about 10 years of military fastpitch experience, 15 years of military slow pitch experience (we were pemitted to play both as they were different seasons) and 13 years of organized hardball experience as a youth! I was a good catcher, a great hitter and had the worlds' biggest mouth! So XC9 told me I needed to get my a$$ out and provide verbal support once ya'll start playing the games! :smt023

I can say from experience that a co-ed league is more relaxed and more fun, but if we can't get enough to participate, I'm more than willing to play in a summer or fall men's league.
I played in the adult baseball league that was active in Hattiesburg a few years ago and had a blast, even though most of the players were fresh out of college baseball programs and had the advantage of being a few years younger than me. As far as getting together to practice, I'm all for it. I never get tired of throwing the ball around. The kids usually want to quit way before I do. :smt001

I'm not getting near enough exercise.

i say we shoot for summer or fall. maybe we can get together on like a sun afternoon and just play around. throw, catch, bat. at least get some practice in before the season we choose to play in.

Yeah I agree Southern Belle we could get together and practice fundamentals. I've played every position and Coached some. I think if we could wait and be organized we would be better off. I'd like to see some Mh uniform's. This is a great Idea! I'll play anytime though....We might get to play the American. I promise a Homerun in that game!!!
