Barbaro to be buried at Churchill Downs (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22888385/)

2006 Kentucky Derby winner was euthanized one year ago Tuesday

...The 2006 Kentucky Derby champion, who was euthanized Jan. 29, 2007 from complications of a breakdown suffered at the Preakness, will have his ashes interred at Churchill Downs.

Barbaro’s remains will be placed outside of an entrance gate in a large elevated space enclosed by bricks. The site will also include a bronze statue commissioned by owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson and loaned to the track as part of the official memorial site....

That was the saddest thing I've seen in a long time. I could never watch the replays.

You and I both. It was just horrible. I get teary-eyed just reading about him.

But I am delighted that they chose Louisville and Churchill Downs to bury him. It's only 15 minutes from my house :) And CD is the place where Barbaro had his greatest triumph.....I couldn't think of a more appropriate place.

I am happy that they are honoring Barbaro with placing his remains at Churchill Downs, but I have very mixed emotions about the horse racing industry. Those who know me, know that horses are my passion. I am blessed to have had horses for most of my life and currently have three beautiful babies. Watching Barbaro try to get back up just made me heartsick... I cried all day...

Having learned way more about the horse racing industry that I ever wanted to know, (some people are just cruel) I learned that they numb the horses legs before a race when they know that the horse is injured or in pain. That explains a lot when you see a horse try to get up after a major injury... The horse racing industry is brutal. I know not all breeders, owners, trainers and jockeys are crooked, but what some of those horses have to endure is just sickening.

I love to watch the horses run and love a clean race, but I seriously hope that the dirty ones are caught and stopped. Many of the horses which the breeders, owners and trainers deem unfit for racing wind up being sold for slaughter to prevent the proliferation of the bloodlines. There are rare instances in which the horses do find nice homes.

Many of the horses sustain life altering injuries and are put down before becoming cripple. Racing those young horses before their bones are fully developed and before their muscles and ligaments are fully developed is a dangerous game. With proper care, conditioning, training and nurturing, the horse will be fine, but far too many breeders, owners and trainers are just greedy and push the horse too far and the end results are just disasterous.... God bless the horses....

Ever since I was able to crawl, I have been a horse lover. I was blessed to own 3 of them before I became disabled. I could draw & paint horses quite well before my hands became messed up with neurological damage. I still have old drawings that I did. I am going to have them matted & framed one of these days...:smt086

firefly, that is heartbreaking, I am sorry to hear that... And I agree with you about watching him struggle so much... Barbaro just had such a great spirit and had so much heart... You are much more gifted than I am in the art department...As much as I love them and love to draw and paint, I just never could capture the image of a horse...

I cried when Barbaro died, just like I cried when Secretariat died.

What magnificent athletes. The jockeys were just along for the ride with those two.
