So he's retiring now? He's not coaching this season? That's surprising.
He's one hell of a coach. He's a great story and role model.

From what I know, Kary is a real high class guy himself. Hope it's a good season for those guys.

Wow.. Being a graduate of Petal High I really do not like Oak Grove in any sport.. But I have known Coach Breland for 20 years and he is one of the greatest person I have ever met. Its amazing what he accomplished year after year.. No matter what year it was he had a team that could beat anyone anywhere anytime.. I never saw him pissed off or without a smile on his face.. I dont think I have had ever anything negative about him..

9 state championships over 800 wins.. Unbelieveable.. It breaks my heart to see him leaving the game of baseball.. He has touched so many lives over 37 years..

Great man, great coach, greta dad, a true role model..

Coach Breland, Im proud to say you are a friend of mine. Good luck :smt023

No doubt, Harry Breland is a living legend, and as I have said numerous times, he is a man who transcends race, and I have always admired what he has accomplished. Coming into a community as an African American coach in a (then) almost all white community, and earning the respect of his athletes and inspiring them to win at the level he has is nothing short of remarkable. He is a role model for anyone, and I only regret that his health has prevented him from going after State Championship Number Ten!

If a certain organization were wise, they could certainly do far worse than naming Harry Breland Lamar County Citizen of the Year at their annual banquet.

Thanks for putting Oak Grove athletics on the map, and for the memories, Coach!

noway,

I played basketball for Coach Breland in high school and I agree wholeheartedly with everything you posted except the part about him not getting pissed off.....I've seen him pissed off...up close and personal....it ain't pretty! But, I still love him like a daddy!
