Don't Expect the Golden eagles to Meet the Ole Miss Rebels on the football field anytime soon. Not Going to Happen (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080207/NEWS01/80207010)

“As long as I am chancellor it’s not ever going to happen,” University of Mississippi Chancellor Robert Khayat told the Hattiesburg American editorial board Wednesday. <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 align=left border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=ad align=middle><SCRIPT language=JavaScript> OAS_AD('ArticleFlex_1'); </SCRIPT> </TD><TD width=10></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>“The fans of both schools do not behave. They are mean to each other. It’s a mean-spirited game. LSU people rock our bus and call us names and Mississippi State people (do the same) and we do the same thing to them, I’m sure,” Khayat explained.
“But I’m telling you, people fall out over the USM-Ole Miss game. It wasn’t a healthy environment.”

Buncha punks at Ole Miss anyway.

What the chancellor meant to say was, "As long as I am chnacellor it's not ever going to happen. Southern Miss is too much of a threat and could very likely beat the crap out of us. We have nothing to gain by beating them and everything to lose by losing to them. We are going to crop out and blame it on bad behavior and deprive thousands and thousands of fans what they want."

OK, so what would be the excuse for MS State not playing USM? We all know the real reason is that USM would kick the crap out of both teams.

I don't quite understand the Chancellor's logic...or for that matter why he was down here visiting with the HA's editorial board. Largely among Ole Miss partisans I hear chuckles (the most common refrain I hear is the dress code of USM fans versus the Grove -lol) or indifference when USM is mentioned, but of course I hear venom from USM fans when Ole Miss is mentioned -- largely based on the fact the Ole Miss "won't" play them.

I would agree that USM may well have whipped Ole Miss if they had played during the last few years notwithstanding the fact that even Orangutan was 3-0 against Memphis and USM was 1-2 against the Tigers during the same time frame. Now that Ole Miss HAS a Coach, I wouldn't be quite so confident. Both teams brought in solid recruiting classes yesterday, and I would expect a tough game either way if played.

In my past observation, Memphis fans are far more obnoxious than USM fans, and Ole Miss continues to play them every year. So, why not put USM on the schedule.

Last season USM couldn't beat the sisters of the poor. Better get the program back on track before making such statements.

State took down the CUSA champs. I don't think USM would've been a big problem.

prolly not, but I would be willin' to bet that more people showed up for the state vs. usm game.......besides...CUSA champs...lol..

It would fill a stadium. No doubt. I miss those games in Jackson.

You can't really base how good a team is on being the CUSA champs. This is a very poorly filled conference. Honestly, who is gonna really care who the CUSA champ is?....

(crickets chirp...... still chirping.......)

That's right, NOBODY! Granted, USM had a few bad years recently, but they are on the right track now. Don't look for them to stay in Conference USA very long if Fedora runs the program like he should. USM could have beat Ole Miss last year. Possibly could have beat MS State. Don't get me wrong.... State had a great year... but I really think USM could have given them a run for their money.

State's defense would've eaten USM alive.
Here's a question for you.......what conference do you think USM could move to? I think that's an interesting question because the options are very limited IMO.

As much as everybody would like to believe the SEC..... I know that is not possible. You cannot have all the major teams in one state in the same conference. That is in the rules of the SEC. I'm not sure where USM would go. I know that USM would be better than Ole Miss is in the SEC. Ole Miss CONSISTANTLY scrapes the bottom of the barrel in that conference, along with Vanderbilt. That said, I think the SEC would do well to ditch those two schools and possibly bring in USM. That would be one option... not very feasible, but still an option. Yes, I agree the options are limited, but it is possible for USM to move out of CUSA.

I think USM should cut their basketball program and focus on football and baseball. They've got to be losing crazy money on their basketball program.

The Big East is said to be expanding in the near future.

USM's year last year was nothing to be too proud of, but we at least did have a winning season. Ole Miss was pitiful and lost every conference game. They crack me up with their elitist attitudes and crappy team. Did you guys read the latest?

"We concede. You beat us. We’re just not going to play,” Khayat said.

That could be an option, and it would put USM playing Louiville again.

USM can't fill a stadium with fans. It's all about money why Ole Miss and MSU won't play USM.

I remember the last time MSU played USM in Hattiesburg. MSU won and USM fans took it badly. Heck, Jim Cameron did a Viewpoint about the game and implied the MSU fans were selling dope during the game. Unbelievable.

Is it better to be a good team in a terrible conference, or a terrible team in a good conference?

You're comparing to an Ole Miss team that just went through it's worst few seasons in decades. Before that one game in this past season, the worst crowd at Ole Miss for a non-conference game in the last several years was in the upper 40's

Remember before the last four years, Ole Miss football had gone through a period of being quite competitve for the previous seven seasons (Bowls in every season except the 2001 7-4 season, in which a 6-5 Alabama team Ole Miss defeated was invited) and fairly regularly during the Brewer years (5 Bowl appearances, including the 1991 Gator Bowl). We were complaining because Ole Miss was going 4-4 in the SEC every year and couldn't quite get over the hump to the upper tier. We beat the Vanderbilts and Kentucky's of the SEC regularly and even whipped LSU a few times!
