View Full Version : Thread about music

I wanted to start a thread that dealt with music. I am a big fan of music and have listened intently to many kinds. Music, if you listen to it, can sort of be a way to get rid of the distractions of life and is pure. People argue about politics (I do alot) and religion so I thought it woud be fun/nice to talk about music. People should post what types of music they like and or the bands they enjoy. Music also has different meanings to different people. Like me, I listen to music for the melody and I am a big fan of progressive rock (such as Yes, Tool, ELP, etc). I like different timing signatures and scales used by lead guitarists. Some people like music for its lyrics. Others like it if you can dance to it.
Here is a list of my favorite bands in mostly correct order:
Yes
Jimi Hendrix
Beatles
Tool/APC
Led Zeppelin
Soundgarden
Anything Steve Winwood
Clapton
Jack Johnson
John Mayer
Alison Krauss
Ricky Skaggs
Queen
Commodores
Honestly there are a million others so I will leave it at that.
Your turn.

My tastes blow with the wind. I've listened to about everything at one point in time in my life. I'll list some of my new personal favorites, and my old standby's.
Paolo Nutini
Barenaked Ladies
Ben Folds
Pearl Jam
Red Hot Chilipeppers
Merril Bainbridge
Pet Shop Boys
Tupac

That is prety eclectic! Pearl Jam to Tupac! LOL. I will have to admit that I have never heard Nutini or Bainbridge though.

I would also like to say that I play a little guitar, and consider myself relatively versed in the creation of music.I also left off a 't' in pretty in my previous post.
hendrixfreak70

The problem I run into with the guitar is I will read the tabs to a song and get the main riff and then move on to the next song. For example, I can play the hell out of the intro to "Free Bird" but after that capoot. Pink Floyd stuff, a little more than the intro. "Hair of the Dog" the whole song. Etc Etc Etc. Anyone else play any instruments.

Now that is eclectic as hell! I love Neil Finn too! Crowded House is the bomb. You like the darker sound it looks like. Depeche and all. Stevie can get down with his shuffles. George Strait never did a bad song. I also failed to mention I love the heavier stuff such as Slayer, Pantera, Rage Against the Machine etc.

Your a metal guy I see (or a female?). And old school rap. Love it!
hendrixfreak70
02-08-2008, 08:40 AM
I guess I should break it down too.
Rap: Outkast, Lil Flip, UGK, Paul Wall, Bone Thugz (E.1999 Bone Thugz), Snoop, Trick Daddy, Dayton Family
Bluegrass: Alison Krauss, Ricky Skaggs, many others
Country: Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty, Don Williams (my fav), Willie Nelson (Red Headed Stranger), Charlie Pride (Perhaps the most underrated of them all), John Anderson, this list could get too long.
I am not a fan at all of the hair bands (Poison, Skid Row, etc)
R n B: Mostly old school stuff like the Commodores, the Manhattans, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder
Rarely heard on the radio: Fats Domino, Blue October, Ray Lamontagne, Matt White, Chad Fischer(Scrubs theme song Superman guy), Paul Simon, Toad the Wet Sprocket (super talented musicians), School of Fish
There is so much more that I will post later because this may bore some people.

Still a guy, last time I peed.
People used to ask me how I could go from listening to Guns n' Roses to NWA in the same day. Wasn't such a stretch to me. Angry guys dropping countless F Bombs. The only thing different was the beat.
I'm always pissed off about something, so metal speaks to me. I remember still how deeply ...And Justice For All hit me. I remember laughing at the people who actually believed Ozzy was a "devil worshiper", nevermind the fact that his kids were in catholic school at the time. Even funnier were the people doing a 180 when MTV put "Mama, I'm Coming Home" into heavy rotation. Suddenly, I was Petal High's Ozzy authority or something. "Do you think he's changed his ways? That's a really pretty song!" Ignorance: Fun stuff.
Even now, Otep's "The Lord is My Weapon" relates to my desire to have people's religious believes out of my way and the way of people who believe differently.
Contrastingly, country music just doesn't do anything for me. Nothing about singing through one's nose and wearing ugly hats/shirts speaks to me.
Dance music makes me physically ill, so, ya know.
hendrixfreak70
02-08-2008, 09:51 AM
I really have a sort of disdain for modern country mostly. It has gone the way of pop as far as I am concerned. However to me the older stuff has often times a good melody. Mostly it is not difficult music to arrange or produce. Mostly the same keys too. Dance music=shiite. And gay too.

See if he'll do some of Rhoads' more classical influenced numbers just for mama, Some "Goodbye to Romance" or "Revelation: Mother Earth", or even "Dee". There's some really nice licks in those tracks and they don't have as much anarchy inducing energy as the more up tempo stuff.

Our son takes lessons at C&M music center. He's only been playing about a year, but he's really good. He kind of just picked it up by relentlessly practicing on his own for about six months before he decided he was ready for lessons. He plays an acoustic and a classical acoustic. He's really progressing now that he can read music and is exploring different kinds of music. I tried telling him about all kinds of good music for years, but all he wanted to listen to was all the stupid crap that his friends liked. Then, when he started playing, he would come to me asking for my MP3 player so he could figure out how to play a Allman Brothers or Tesla or Metallica song. He's finally developing good taste in music!:smt023

E4B is right. Take him to get lessons at any music place. Mississippi Music prolly gives lessons. C&M Music too. Also another way to learn is to print tabs of the internet. They are, at least for me, easier to read than music. If he has a basic understanding of frets then it should be ok.

i also like Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke". just thought of this b/c of a preview. really like this song.
That is perhaps one of my top three favs by Stevie. That song really shows his range vocally. "I Believe (When I Fall in Love)" is my favorite because it shows his versatility musically. It really is a beautiful melody. "Overjoyed" is my favorite because integrates the melody with awesome range. Love it. Stevie's politics are lacking but musically he is da bomb.

Iommi is a god. Bottom line.
After that, it was a daily ritual for me. I'd spend hours beating some old Sabbath tunes to death on my busted up Ibanez "X". War Pigs, Paranoid, Children of the Grave, Ironman (15-20 times a day), Sweet Leaf, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Electric Funeral, Hand of Doom, N.I.B., and on and on. Good times.
I think that might be the only time in my life that dear ol' dad was actually proud of me.

he better get an A!! Hes begging me to pay for his guitar lessons and I told him an A will get it :smt023 He has been trying to learn from watching tutorials on you tube and its getting him nowhere! Just giving me a headache :kekeke:
I keep telling him he cant start of learning how to play Sweet Child O Mine, he has to start by learning chords, etc........ Now I need to find somewhere for him to get lessons :smt102
Don't discourage the boy from learning the hard stuff first...especially when it comes to guitar...let him feel his own way.Trust me.

Indeed. I started out with the easy stuff and became content with just knowing the easy stuff.
Damn you, Tony Iommi!

I agree. I have found that I was able to play a little Led Zeppelin, Boston, Yes, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Beatles, Nazareth, Jack Johnson, Nirvana, Pink Floyd and several others before I really got to know chords. Albeit I am not very good but I can do ok. And not the whole song either. So let him wail away. The chords will come but I found that learning 'lead' is easier than learning chords.

I have noticed thus far alot of you guys like guitarists. SRV and Clapton particularly. Why no Hendrix??Short answer - Television.
Televised concerts didn't come along until later. ;)
And - I think it's because they're mostly listeners - not players.
No mention of Django Reinhart, Jeff Beck, Joe Pass, Mundell Lowe, John McLaughlin, Carlos Santana, Duane Allman, Dicky Betts, Paul Butterfield, Wes Montgomery, Les Paul, George Benson, Mick Box, Joe Walsh, Kevin Eubanks, Robert Johnson - - on and on - -
I mean - - there are and have been a gazillion really outstanding guitarists that most folks never heard of.
