View Full Version : Need a Sportster worked on
My sporty needs some attention. We think the carb needs to be rebuilt. There are other little things going on with it too, but right now I'd be happy if it would idle and run without sputtering and dying. The weather's getting nice and I'm itching to ride.
Do you know anyone who can work on it for a reasonable price?
We don't want to take it to the Harley shop because they're high.
We don't want to take it to the Triumph place on Hardy street unless someone has had a good experience w them, because they're probably gonna be high.
A&B cycles screwed up the last bike I let them work on, and I'm not doing business with them anymore.
Custom Cycles changed hands and the guy that owns it now is an asshole. They don't seem very interested in working on anything. I'm not sure what they bought the shop for. The mechanic there quit, and last time we checked they didn't even HAVE anyone.
And Black Creek Cycles is gone because the guy is in jail.
So. Other than those, does anyone know someone who can get the job done without charging HD prices?
There's a place on 98 out past Macks called motorcycle gear. Give him a call.

I have had some work done at Deep South, the Triumph dealer on Hardy, and they were quite reasonable compared to Hattiesburg Cycles.

First off did you let it sit for a couple of months without winterizing it? It might just be a case of varnish, & some carb cleaner (I recommend Gumout or the red ATF fluid) might be the ticket.
As for mechanic I can't make recommendations since I don't know what HD guys are around anymore. Me personally Id call Allen over at A&B ask for recommendations, but ask for references. Carbs can be a bitch, workin' on 'em is like a spiritual thing, but more like voodoo & poltergeists than gospel.
We took it to R & C Customs in Seminary. They got it running better, but still not quite right, so we just took it back. The carburetor is fine, they say. They took off the hypercharger off of it and put a new petcock on it and some other junk. It has more power but was still sputtering and missing, so hopefully they'll find the problem and it won't cost two grand.
A&B is more likely to screw your bike up than fix it. At least that's what they did to my other one. Twice. They're not getting a third shot.

If you were wondering where they get all their old bikes sitting around, rotting outside, now you know...
They forgot they HAD my Honda! It's an old piece of junk, but it DID run okay. They were replacing a clutch cable. It was there for almost a month and we weren't in a hurry to get it back (obviously) but figured we should've heard from them, so I dropped by there one day. The guy told me he didn't have my motorcycle. I finally pointed to my key hanging from the wall and asked him what it went to. Then he got pissed and started cussing at his employees. I told him I didn't care about the fk up and there was no hurry; I just wanted to check on the bike. The clutch cable was under the counter still in the package it was shipped to them in. It must've taken them no time to put it on, because they called me later that day and said it was ready. It wasn't a big deal and I don't guess it's an indicator of their mechanical ability, but it makes you wonder.
They rebuilt both carbs on it before that, and it ran worse when we got it back than it did before. They are also the reason the clutch cable had to be replaced, and they ALSO fkd up something electrical in it, because the headlight and tail light didn't work when we got it back either. We've given up on the Honda-- it was just a bike for me to learn on anyway and it'll probably rust away in the shop unless someone else wants it. But they're not getting their grubby little monkey hands on my Sporty.
From what everyone says, that used to be the place to get work done. I don't know what it used to be like, but I know what it's like now, and do not recommend them. It's too bad there's no longer a good place in town.

I haven't been there since Peanut was there so I don't know how their work has deteriorated, but they always did a good job for me.

I liked Peanut. He was kinda quiet though. They have a good mechanic at Deep South named Mark. He is good. My wife used to work at Deep South. Scot is good too but he is a Harley mechanic.

Something about those directions sounds a tad off.
