It's just really dark, thunder, and rain coming down. I really freaked myself out though... I heard the sound of a TRAIN and almost freaked... lol, yeah- it really was a train. I'm right by the tracks! hehe

Weather seems to be letting up rapidly near OGLE. OK, Scarlett, load 'em up and tell the bus drivers to be safe......................

Still some thunder but radar shows the heavy stuff in H'bg area.......

heads up H'bg and points east..

But remember, when a tornado makes a train noise, you won't hear it toot it's whistle and you won't here the ding ding ding of the gates coming down at Shelby Speights! :)

Remington

Based on the radar I'm looking at, the storm that possibly contained a tornado has passed Purvis....so you should be safe now Lips....except will need an umbrella for the rain.

Oh certainly, but for those of us who freak out about it (and I'm one of them), perhaps a little self-restraint on our part (not on yours) is a good idea. I mean...I could feel my own anxiety building, and decided it was really best if I checked out some other things. Since there's nothing I can do about it anyway. Really. :smt102

All of this weather technology is good for tracking storms, but is terrible on a person's nerves.

I don't recall having "weather anxiety" as a child. Of course, we didn't have the technology then that is available to us now.

Maybe it was because I was a child and knew that my parents or the grownups in my life would take care of me.

Honey

LipsofanAngel
02-12-2008, 03:52 PM
Still thundering, but seems to be slacking off. Thanks goodness. My heart rate is back to normal now :)

I've heard that there was "significant damage" in Jones county.... anyone have any details on that?

Just announced...we're not leaving early anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Someone wanna come and trade places with me????

I'm really glad Jota is with me. He would be stuck at school right now and that would stink.

At least you know you aren't alone. I don't really have weather anxiety--I spose I would if it got really bad. I'm kind of fascinated by it, to be honest. But I always know that when the weather is funny I will find ya'll here--so I come for company.

We still have some little boomers out there, and all kinds of water on the ground--but its not nearly as crazy.

Okay, I am blown away by the stupidity of the way schools handle these type situations. Suddenly now you have to fill out some kind of form in order to check out your child when there's severe weather. Okay, that's all fine and dandy. They want to make sure their ass is covered in the event something happens. BUT what they fail to care about is the fact that you're putting peoples lives in danger by making them take time to wait on their child to get to the office...then you have to fill out a form. By now 15 minutes have passed.

I have 3 children. One at each school here in Purvis. By the time I've taken time to fill out their forms (to cover their asses) rushed over to pick up my other child (do the same process) then rush over to get the 3rd...well what happens when I'm stuck on the road in the middle of a storm/tornado..whatever the case may be. That's dangerous. I most definately won't wait to pick up my children on days like this when they want you to.

I had to wait about 15 minutes at each school. There really needs to be a long hard look taken at the way they handle all this. Sure I know it's chaotic during these times...just the way they do things now most definately doesn't seem safe to me.

By the way, I asked if next time this occurs if they just kept their forms on file so we wouldn't have to fill them out again. Of course the answer was "no, you have to fill one out each time". WTF?

AT 228 PM CST...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS WERE TRACKING
A TORNADO. THIS TORNADO WAS LOCATED NEAR BAXTERVILLE...MOVING
NORTHEAST AT 50 MPH.

THE TORNADO WILL BE NEAR...
PURVIS BY 240 PM CST...

THIS is exactly what I mean. Thank God it wasn't bad. I had no clue about a tornado...I was too busy trying to sign forms so I could get my kids and get home.

JMC
02-12-2008, 04:20 PM
Is it standard procedure now to pickup kids from school when there's bad weather?
I don't ever remember anyone getting to leave early because the weather got bad. We stayed put until it was over.

dyates
02-12-2008, 04:21 PM
Yeah, you're right JMC and maybe that would be the best thing to do really.

LipsofanAngel
02-12-2008, 04:22 PM
I really do think it's best if something bad is close by to just leave the kids where they are. The one time mom ever checked me out because of weather we ended up in the CAR while a tornado passed... that was not fun.

Scarlett O'Hara
02-12-2008, 04:22 PM
Dyates...............there is no simple solution..............we have to know where the kids are...can you imagine the confusion if a tornado did strike and kids had left without the office being notified? That's why you have to fill out the form each time. I'll try to respond better later.

dyates
02-12-2008, 04:24 PM
I remember when it flooded in Hattiesburg yearsssss ago. I was going to school at Camp Elementary. My mom finally got really scared worried we'd get trapped there...she went and picked me up. I can remember her wading hip deep in water with my baby brother.

Scarlett O'Hara
02-12-2008, 04:25 PM
Can you imagine the parents I've seen today checking out their kids because they are so concerned about the bad weather and they don't even know the child's teacher's name!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm holding it in, here!!!

dyates
02-12-2008, 04:25 PM
Yeah, I can imagine the confusion of the woman that called while I was filling out yet ANOTHER form talking about the last time this kinda crap happened the bus left her child. The form thing just shows that they really are more concerned about their finances and not getting sued or what have you than peoples safety. It's a shame but that's basically how most everything is run now a days.

dyates
02-12-2008, 04:28 PM
I'm not arguing the fact of checking your child out. Really I understand they have to and should keep up with where everyone is but when they are more concerned about you filling out that paper than going to get your child so you can get home before the weather gets even worse...well I have a problem with that.

I really don't understand why they can't have you fill one out once then keep them on file for the next time? That doesn't make sense to me.

Buses at the elementary loading now.............they usually load about 1:30 and get back to get us about 3:15.............I really don't wanna be here after dark!!!

LipsofanAngel
02-12-2008, 04:36 PM
Sorry Scarlett! My mom's in the same situation... and my *former* roommate.

Good for me though, I actually get to leave early. Since schools are holding kids, we can't get them here in time for group session.

Fill out the form, except for the date, and have them make a photocopy for you. Go home, make about 15 more copies, and just fill in the date before you walk in the office next time. Problem solved.

Honey
02-12-2008, 04:54 PM
Scarlett get the lysol.

dyates
02-12-2008, 04:56 PM
Yeah, sure I could do that but then again they could keep them on file. I'll just make sure I go to pick them up alot earlier and I guess they'll just have to count it as an early dismissal.

SoMissTV
02-12-2008, 04:58 PM
Yeah, sure I could do that but then again they could keep them on file.

Since they've told you they're not going to do that, you might consider my alternative.
