Founder of Camp Sister Spirit dies (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080213/NEWS01/802130320/1002)
Brenda Henson hated the word tolerance. Instead of tolerating each other, Henson wanted people to accept each other. Henson, founder of the 120-acre Camp Sister Spirit in Ovett, died Friday of liver cancer in Arkansas. She was 62.

The dog on the mailbox thing was a hoax... It didn't happen... When that supposedly happened I was with the ones that were accused of doing it and we were coon hunting in the area in some of the cornfields. I will be more than happy to recount the details of this incident if anyone really wants to know... I was there with some guys I hung out with from S. Jones.

So just because the one's accused of it were with you, means that no one else could have done it?

no, that is why I requested that if anyone wanted to know they could p.m. me... but if you really want to know, it was two of the sisters themselves that put it there cause when we came back through there they were there and were dragging the dog across the road to the mailbox... we blew the horn and hollered at em cause it was the redneck thing to do and was the M.O. of one of the guys that was with us (the good Congressman's son) Lo and behold, the next thing we knew was that the law (Jones Co. SO) came to visit us at the Union Store parking lot and asked us about it and said that it had been reported that we had done it...NEGATIVE, we didn't do it and it was some of their residents that did it. Maybe the lack of cooperation with the S.O. was in reference to that incident since the deputy just rolled his eyes and told us to stay out of trouble.

Just because YOU ALL didn't do something, doens't mean that others in the past have not done cruel things to these women. I'm glad you weren't associated with that event, but I know that things have been done there that were simply- wrong.

I agree with you, but just wanted to clarify the whole dog thing... I just happened to be guilty of being a redneck at the wrong place at the wrong time. We had nothing to do with it, but it was quiet the adrenaline rush when we got accused of it.

Why in the world would someone drag a dead dog to their own mailbox? That is crazy. Anyway, I'm sure they were welcomed with open arms, since you know.....that would be the redneck thing to do.;)

To be honest with you we never bothered em. Not one bit. We used to carry on about it among ourselves but to be honest with you we never really cared that much cause we were either coon hunting, talkin on the c.b., chasing skirts ourselves, or talking about skirts we would like to chase if given the opportunity.:smt102

I never had the opportunity to go out there... but I did have some friends that worked for a community service type group. After the hurricane they took supplies & food out there, and helped clean up debris that was everywhere. My friends said that the people there were some of the nicest people they have ever met. Although Henson has passed, I'm glad that she was able to set up the camp... I think a lot of good has been done there.

They used to come in the store where I worked and buy supplies, gas, groceries from time to time and were always nice to me and I was nice to them. Some of them even came in there enough that I knew them and they knew me by name.

I don't see where it's that big of a deal. Sure, it would be mean to do that to someone regardless of WHY. Me and my friend threw a dead dog in the driveway of a basketball coach once because she cut her from the team her senior year. (It just happened to be on the side of the road nearby, and we threw it on the back of the car and took it there and dumped it.) We were bored redneck kids, and dumping the dog was just one of many things that took place between our many toilet papering excursions. The idea was that the coach would have to get out of her car and deal with a giant dead dog in the driveway before she could leave for work the next morning. Was it mean? Yep. That's why we did it. Am I losing sleep? Um, no. And I don't think anyone else did either.

They were/are still a great open place for the Pagan Community of the pinebelt. Many a meeting has taken place in their 'camp'.
I still remember the Oprah show where they had the old guy in Ward's saying he thought it was a place where they taught women to be lesbian. Priceless.

Do you mean state representative? I don't think it was Gene Taylor's son, or Mike Parker's. They were the two Congressmen from the area of South Mississippi at the time.
I know all about the whole ordeal - I was working at the newspaper in Laurel at the time and covered it as a reporter. It was a made-up, blown-out-of-proportion controversy stirred up for the sake of the gay rights movement. They wanted to make it a civil rights issue like race and figured Mississippi was the place to make that case. I seriously doubt any real harassment took place - at least until the Sisters themselves began stirring the pot.

It WOULD NOT have been Gene Taylor's kid, Gary was only a small tike way back then and they live in the Bay.

Well as I've gotten older I've come to not give a damn what people think about where I came from. I was just saying that I used to be mean as a snake, so having one of my little country road terrorist acts labeled "horrible" would've made me proud.

Yes, it was a "state representative's son," didn't mean to confuse you there P.I. I still see him from time to time and we are still friends to this day even though he bout got me killed on more than one occassion... 10 ft. tall and bullet proof is what he thought we all were... that is prolly why we were such easy targets for the blame of that situation.:-D

I was in middle school or early high school when Camp Sister Spirit came to Jones County. I do remember Brenda and her partner (cant remember her name) coming to Petal to buy groceries at Jitney Jungle. They seemed nice enough. Just kinda wanted to be left alone.

It was Wanda, and they really didn't want to be "left alone." I remember an article in the Hatt. Am. about the the compoud that had a "camper" in it after a storm damage carrying a chainsaw in the picture. The camper was reported as saying something to the effect of "Everyone's nightmare, a dike with a chainsaw." I thought it was funny but at the same time even as young as I was I was aware of the way the media is used to stir the tirds so to speak... I didn't have a prob. with Brenda or Wanda and used to carry on with 'em at the store, BUT, I was well aware of what was going on and to be honest with you... I didn't really didn't give a flying fart cause I knew that they, just like me, in the end was just looking for a piece of tail. I'm more mature now and don't really spend that much time on it to be hones with you.:kekeke:

Jumped off of Union bridge countless times. If you all didn' know it. The previous owner of Union falls sold it. He surveyed off 7 acres from just the other side of the creek to the road including the falls/swimhole and all. It sold for 11 thousand dollars..........I missed it by 3 days.....dammit. I would have like to have said I owned Union Falls lol...last I heard is that the fall wasn't but about 2 ft. wide. I'll bet it's runnin' pretty good right now though.
