View Full Version : Nails: Artificial or Real?

Do you prefer artificial nails, or real nails?
I went for a mani-pedi yesterday, and I think I was the only person who was getting a manicure without artificial nails. All of the other ladies were there for refills.
I tried solar nails one time, hated them, and removed them after a couple of days. That was my one and only experience with artificial nails.
My personal preference is short nails with rounded square tips, with a pale polish.
I get a little more daring with my pedicure colors. :-D

Well I have "manly" hands for a girl so I like artificial square tip nails for myself but I dont get them anymore because I cant afford them. I took a pay cut so I had to give up somethings. But if I ever increased my pay I would get them in a heart beat.

Sounds like you and I are about the same on this one. I prefer real nails. Artificial ones just don't feel right (and they are so expensive to maintain). I have short nails (wish they were a tad longer) and I like the french manicure look, or something pale.

I have real nails. I can't afford to maintain artificial...and I don't think that artificial nails look as nice as my real ones. :-D I did it when I was senior in high school for about six months but haven't done it since then.
Which reminds me that I need to do my nails. It's been about a month. :smt105

i like both, but i would have to say i prefer my real nails for this reason. if you choose to not maintain and keep up with the artificial nails, when you take them off your real nails are complely messed up. i am going through the repairing stages now. i had artificial nails for about 3 months and am now working on getting my real nails back to their original condition. they have been very flimsy, chip and crack easily, and sometimes split on the ends where the top layer peels off. i have kept them short, filed, and clear coated with hardner since. they are almost back to "normal".
right now i have clear polish with confetti hearts in it on my nails and toes. it's maybeline.

Tea tree oil or listerine. Rub tea tree oil on each nail daily. Or soak toes in listerine daily.

Fishbait you might want to check with your doctor. I know that if a fungus gets under the nailbed that it usually take a prescription to get it all cleared up. I cant think of anything over the counter that might help. What about that athlete's foot fungus stuff??? I wonder if that would work on nail fungus???

I like natural nails, which mine are. I used to get fake during vacation time and it was something that was pretty for a day or two and then it got on my nerves. In most healthcare settings you can not wear fake nails so that puts me out too. It does make you natural nails weak. If I had nails, they would be french tipped... I hate long colored nails
Toes...I like red.

I've gone the artificial route a few times over the past year. Mainly because I've had to go somewhere important (like my wedding) and have a horrible habit of breaking at least one prior to an important event. I hate them though. They mess up my nails and make them brittle. I'm trying to get mine back in shape now. Hopefully there will be no need in the near future to require "cute" nails. Any suggestions on how to make your nails real strong?
Kitty

. . .Any suggestions on how to make your nails real strong?
Keep your nails short, square shaped and slightly rounded on top. Trim brittle nails after a bath or a 15-minute hand-soak in bath oil. Then apply a moisturizer.
Moisturize your nails and cuticles at bedtime and cover them with cotton gloves.
Apply a nail hardener, but avoid products containing toluene sulfonamide or formaldehyde. These chemicals can cause redness or irritate the skin.
Don't use nail polish remover more than twice a month. Instead, touch up the polish. When you do need a remover, avoid those that use acetone, which dries nails.
Repair splits or tears with nail glue or clear polish.

Anyone opting for artificial nails, or going natural?

My toes are painted OPI Bubble Bath.
It's a really clean, neutral look.
Next time I may go with a new OPI orange shade that I bought thinking it looked so "summery."
My fingers aren't painted anything right now. Doing yard work is brutal on a manicure, and hands in general, particularly if you forget to put on your gloves.

nevermind
I've never had artificial nails except for the cheapo kind we all tried as teenagers. I'm too rough on mine to spend big bucks getting artificial ones now.
I've had acrylics in the past but prefer my natural nails. In fall and winter months I wear reds and in the spring and summer....pinks or french manicure. Nothing beats the total relaxation of a manicure and pedicure!!!

I have short natural nails. I, too, bit my nails for years and recently quit. When they get longer they bother me when I'm typing so I just keep them short and if I polish them I like a natural shade like OPI Sweetheart. Now my toes are a different story - I'm all about a pedicure. In the summer I like something bright that'll go with a majority of my summer shoes.
