My FIL has cut his 5 acres of timber and is looking to replant in something that can be a bit more valuable than the wild growth that was there this time.

So, my questions are:

1)What type of pine to plant for best time/money?
2)Can you get these pine trees for free anywhere?
3)If not, where can you get them for cheap?

CB, I don't know about for free, but you can buy trees at a cheap price from arborday.org.

The forestry commission used to help out with "Tree Farmers" back in the day and I am sure they still do... Let me see if I can find anything of the like on their site... They have the latest and best data on the best trees... Soil/land type are a big factor. Improved loblolly, slash, long leaf pine, etc... Disease resistance all are factors to consider... Long leaf makes the best timber but they are slow growing but a good investment for your future generations to come. They have tight grains and are often considered to be number one lumber. The loblolly grow well in swampy areas and the improvement made is they are more disease resistant for cranartions or cat faces as they are called... There are ore species available but I don;t know all there is to know about them... Anyway going to Mississippi's site to see if I can see anything there

Tell f-i-l to call Andy Parker with the City of Hburg. He is the tree man and will be glad to help him out...his office is in Highland Cemetary office on W. 7th St. Your f-i-l "may" know him...not for sure if he had retired before Andy came on board with the city.
