Isn't that what he was elected to do? (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080217/NEWS01/802170329/1002)
The mayor says the "increased responsibilities" will mean longer hours for him, but he doesn't have a choice.
"You do what you have to do," DuPree said.
Yeah. It's called being a mayor.

Oh, yeah. Because I am so sure that Beverly Magee Commodore did anything that important. Chances are, he (or someone else) was probably already doing those jobs anyway.
Poor Mayor Dupree

Guess if he doesn't like the hours he shouldn't run again.

Welcome to the real world, Dupree. You know, some of us work more than 40 hours a week... some more than 80.

When is the next Hattiesburg mayoral election anyway?
Council President Kim Bradley, who previously told the Hattiesburg American he felt the position was needed, said he voted against filling the position because there were more pressing issues council needed to deal with.
Bradley needs to quit flipping every time the wind blows.
The CAO serves as the final link in the chain of command between the mayor and the city's six department directors.
I don't see any reason why Dupree should have a problem being that final link.

Maybe now he will have to stay in town. I don't think he is much of a mayor.and he will probably be worse as an CAO. I hope he doesn't run again, but Im sure he will, unless he gets a better offer from his friends in Washingto DC.

I just hope when he gets out of office Hattiesburg isnt like Jackson. I think our cops are doing a wonderful job but sometime their hands are tied and the mayor and police chief need to step up and help the city out. Maybe Bolton will be good for Hattiesburg. I just hope Dupree doesnt mess things up too bad.

Awwwww, this will take away time from his important stuff, like traveling to D.C. and other places to "promote" our city... Poor little fella, it just ain't fair that he might have to work 20 hours a week instead of the 10 that he is used to. Hurry, bring the palm fans and iced tea, someone wipe the sweat from his brow and make him comfortable up there on his padded throne that he has set himself up in and his followers have been carrying him around on for the last six years!!!

IF he didn't want to put the hours in he should never have run for mayor in the first place. I know that Morgan was the first to have a CEO...he didn't need one then, Dupree doesn't need one now. IMHO he will just be doing what he was elected to do. There are too many chiefs and not enuf Indians! (IN SOME DEPTS!)

It's about time he has to work. If he is putting in extra hours, then it can be recompense for all the time he's been elsewhere doing nothing.

Well, maybe this just means the Mayor now won't be out of town so much. . .
I thought he'd try to get the CAO salary ...

I dont mind the CAO positon, as long as the Mayor is also in the building. What did bother me was that while Mayor Dupree was attending Jackson State attending school full time and left the city in the hands of Ms Commodore and the Rev. Fairly.
That is where my problem begins. Neither were elected. Neither had any accountablility to the voters. I'd like to know which one of those two decided what streets were to be paved and which would receive no attention for the past six years? Could that explain why no streets West of Pine street have been paved by the City of Hattiesburg over the past six years?
Mayor Dupree owes the city tax payers a lot of wasted man hours. His working nights and weekends to do his job will bring no tears to my eyes.

Coincidentally, I had this Emailed to me and thought it appropriate to post here. I will work hard on the message here:
READ THIS
LET IT REALLY SINK IN - THEN CHOOSE.
John is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, 'If I were any better, I would be twins!'
He was a natural motivator.
If an employee was having a bad day, John was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.
Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up and asked him, 'I don't get it!'
'You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?'
He replied, 'Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or...you can choose to be in a bad mood'
I choose to be in a good mood.'
Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or...I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it.
Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or...I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.
'Yeah, right, it's not that easy,' I protested.
'Yes, it is,' he said. 'Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood.
You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live your life.'
I reflected on what he said. Soon hereafter, I left the Tower Industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.
Several years later, I heard that he was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower.
After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, he was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back.
I saw him about six months after the accident.
When I asked him how he was, he replied, 'If I were any better, I'd be twins...Wanna see my scars?'
I declined to see his wounds, but I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place.
'The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon-to-be born daughter,' he replied. 'Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or...I could choose to die. I chose to live.'
'Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?' I asked.
He continued, '...the paramedics were great.
They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read 'he's a dead man'. I knew I needed to take action.'
'What did you do?' I asked.
'Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me,' said John. 'She asked if I was allergic to anything 'Yes, I replied.' The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Gravity''
Over their laughter, I told them, 'I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.'
He lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude...I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.
Attitude, after all, is everything.
West Pine runs east / west, not north / south, so your question doesn't really work.
Many streets west of Hwy 49 have been paved other the last six years. 40th Ave, McInnis Loop, South 34th, Pinehills Drive, and a number of others; off the top of my head.
Next time, do a little research before asking a question like this.
The last time I looked at a map of Hattiesburg, Pine Street runs from the southwest to the northeast. So there very well are streets on the west and east sides of it.
Why do you feel the need to inject snippy little remarks like that last sentence of yours? Belittling others does not make a big man.

I advised our new friend to do a little research because a casual observer can tell that roads have been paved. It doesn't take a genius to see that.

If you'd like to look at it that way, we can add the miles of roads in the avenues that have been paved, as well.
Seriously, it's not hard to see that a great deal of roads west of Pine st have been paved.

No ruder than his (or many other people's) comments regarding the mayor. And certainly less rude than dollfus's comments to me.

The point of my comment, was more to that fact that for the past six years, little to no progress has been made in the tax paving (paying) (lol) areas of the city. I admit I have an off beat sense of humor.
While yes, streets were paved, David Allen and the Board of Supervisors were a key factor in that.
The reason I joined this group, was to belong to a group of well diverse people. People talk about this site all over downtown. Like many of you, I am also on the front line of the battle to improve Hattiesburg. It's a slow and difficult battle. Much work needs to be done. I'm not here to build up my diminished ego, tell anyone how they think or feel is wrong. I'm here to express my individual thoughts, feelings, frustrations about topics which affect us all.
The e-mails were appreciated by all, but, don't worry, I have really big shoulders and welcome comments from all. It's that the entire purpose of this web site.

And that's what we're here for. To discuss different subjects, get out our frustrations, make friends and debate, allowing each to voice his/her opinion and have that opinion respected whether others agree or not.

To call him "our" new friend is assuming a lot on your part.

Are you kidding? That's lame. He wasn't rude to the Mayor. When did you get sappy about protecting the Mayor's feelings anyway. He's a public figure who's salary is paid by the people of H'burg. concernedforhburg has a right to complain about the mayor's lack of time on the job and picking up a check for it. And it doesn't take a genius to tell the differnce between being rude to a newbie and being rude to you or me or others her who know the system. Excusing your behavior by point the finger at others is cowardly.

Maybe because I reported your rude post and asked that you be banned from the site. Apparently they gave you a break and only deleted your nasty remarks. But no one moved on it as far as I know, until I reported it. How's that?
