Well, word is that a couple of years ago, one of the Christmas displays down on 35 South had a dazzling manger, with the Baby Jesus in the box, and Joseph and Mary, and behind them, 3 fireman, dressed up in slickers and hats, with axes in hand.
A curious citizen stopped by and asked the proprietors, "Ah, what a lovely display, but let me ask you one thing: Why those three guys standing in the back?"
To which the gentleman answered, very quickly, "Why, those are the Three Wise Men who came from ah-far."
For me "fire" comes out a little like "far," but not too much. And I think I say "tower" the right way.

I don't say "far", I say "fire". But I pronounce "tower" as "tire". So mine would be fire tire.

I have a mid-south, Memphis accent, so I say "fire" more like "fa-ahr" and tower the right way (well, with two syllables at any rate.) It's always interested (and annoyed) me that you hear this fake generic "Southern" accent on TV and movies, when the accents are so different region to region.

Fire = Fire
Tower = Tower
Thus Fire Tower
What do you expect from a yankee??:laugh::laugh:

I say the same as damnyank too, but then, I lived in the north a long time so that may have something to do with it.:clap::clap::clap:

I usually speak with a bad, poorly executed Southern accent like the whole cast of "Ghosts of Mississippi"....so, I pronounce "firetower" as "fie-towah"...."diddy, did you close the dowah to the fie-towah?"

I'm with you on the fake "Southern" accent thing. Most of the time, the actors speak as if they all come from the southwest corner of Georgia, or somethin'. Howevah, my biggest peeve is when the Hollywood crowd take on a 'Cajun' accent. That usually propels me into relentless laughter, with one exception: Dennis Quaid's dead-on accent in The Big Easy.
('Course, I'm a big Dennis Quaid fan, anyway, since The Right Stuff. . watched Any Given Sunday yesterday and was BLOWN away by that film. I thought Oliver Stone was too . . ah . . loosey-goosey to make a film that spectacular. I HIGHLY recommend the film.

Whatever it is that you do for a living, consider writing, ES. You should have been on stike out in Tinseltown, having left The Daily Show or Colbert Report, or Thirty Rock for your brotherhood.

Now that's funny, because I got up and turned off DQ right in the middle of The Big Easy when he called somebody "cher." That's on my Most Fake List. It was New Orleans, not Lafayette for heaven's sake! In NO they say "boo" or "dahl" but not "cher" --
