View Full Version : Where to rent a car?

Let me preface this by saying that I am very loyal to Thrifty rent a car after the US Airways blizzard debacle of March '07. They had us up and out in a car in an hour after I finally found them. They took the rental on a debit card. Great service. Can't say enough good things about the people who kept me from sleeping in an airport for 2 days.
Anyhow, they don't seem to have an office in Hattiesburg or Laurel. Crazy. When I do rate searches on the big names that I know are in Hattiesburg, they're coming up several hundred dollars more than Thrifty. I'll drive to the coast and get the Thrifty car before I do that.
Anyhow, I wanted to know if any of you knew of a good place to rent cars in Hattiesburg. Our cars are aging, and I'm not comfortable taking them to WDW. Renting a car is cheaper than flying by several hundred dollars, gas included.
Also, any ideas for discounts, etc?

enterprise sometimes runs a "special" where they upgrade you from one class to another- like if you rent a econo box they will upgrade you to a midsize-

and i forgot- you may need to make sure that they will let you drive out of state lines- some rental places won't allow you to do that.

I used Enterprise for a rental to Orlando. It was cheaper to rent than it would have been to drive the personal vehicle and charge the client mileage.

CB, I think that you guys would come out ahead by renting from the airport in Mobile. I travel in and out of there all of the time and they have a Thrifty counter. I have done it before when just wanting to rent a car and park mine at the airport. Airport parking is $6.00 a day and the car rental prices are very cheap compared to what I have found when trying to find one in Hattiesburg... (30-50 per day with unlimited mileage for a full size car) Good luck and I hope that you guys have a blast down there! Drive all of the way the Keys if you have time. It is fun down there too!

Also, sometimes they give discounts if you have a Sam's card.

CB, I just checked the rates with expedia and a week long rental (random date March 3-10) for a midsize was $201 a full size was $212, including taxes.

Thanks for the Mobile tip, Baloo. Actually, it's a good plan. My MIL suggested we do that yesterday afternoon. It's on the way there, so it's a good thing.
$6/day/parking? That's not bad. I wonder if I know anyone in Mobile? Hmm...

CB,
I've used Enterprise for all my vehicle rental needs since 1993-94ish. Their rates are very competitive and I think it's unlimited mileage.

You are most welcome CB, you just have to use the far parking lot. The first one as soon as you turn in for long term. It took me several weeks of parking in the other one to notice that there was a few dollars a day difference. It doesn't make much sense since they are so close together, but the one closest to the rental car lot is a little higher... Good luck and I hope that you guys have a blast! Please tell MIL and FIL hi for me!

In Hattiesburg I would use Enterprise. But the Thrifty counter in Mobile doesnt sound like a bad idea either. Good luck and have fun at DWD. If you get a change do the breakfast with the characters. Its super fun especially if you have kids 6-10 years old.

I think we've almost decided to fly there. Found a pretty good deal out of NO on a nonstop flight that's not a red eye or anything. All things considered, it's only $100 more over total cost of the car rental/gas/etc.

Good luck CB with the rental car search. We leave for WDW Friday morning.
You should have a great time! We went last month and the crowds were not that bad ESPECIALLY if you got there when the parks opened. They became more crowded later in the day.
Be sure you have a CREDIT CARD to rent that car. We were stuck in an emergency one day and they didn't want to rent us a car with our debit card or CASH....Finally got one due to our daughter calling ect. (she was a regular customer). Funny, we applied for a credit card when we got home just to have in case and were turned down. Hmmm, own our own home, both working, ect...we have no credit rating. Companies turn around and give them to college kids who have NOTHING and many of them certainly have no idea how to use a credit card!

That's why I like Thrifty. They'll rent on a debit card.
