A segment on WDAM at 6:00 focused on being prepared for bad weather conditions (seems like we've had our fair share lately).
One of the things mentioned was NOAA weather radios, and I thought I understood Forrest County Civil Defense Director Terry Steed say his department has NOAA weather radios available for senior citizens, but that very few have taken advantage of their availability.
Did anyone else see this segment, or know about the NOAA weather radios available through Civil Defense?

Radio Shack sells the type that has alerts that go off in the areas you choose. Reminder to myself, I need to turn off Pearl River, Marion, and Forrest Counties and just keep Lamar County. I got woke up several times for some severe thunderstorm that was heading through Picayune or something like that. One thing that I don't like about the one I got, you can't turn the alert off for tornado watches. I hate to be woke up at 4:00 AM for them to let me know that we will be under a tornado watch until 2:00 PM the next day. I only want to be alerted to a tornado warning or a severe thunderstorm warning.

Did I hear correctly that Forrest County only has one siren... at USM? That is hard to believe.
There are two near me... one at each end of the street. I wake up every time they sound.

I got my weather radio back in the '80s. It has no features, the batteries are held in by duct tape & aluminum foil, and it's antenna is 2 feet of 12ga copper wire. although it used to pick up everything from short wave, AM, FM & TV, all it gets now is AM & WDAM, but it still squeals when NOAA sends out a warning (if I remember to turn it on.) So, I have to recommend the "Realistic" brand Combination NOAA weather radio from Radio Shack!!

I got mine at Walgreens in Petal when WDAM was programming them for free. I think that is was about 30 dollars if I remember correctly & worth every penny as far as I am concerned. They are loud & they get your attention when they go off & that's what they're supposed to do!

I have found the ones from radio shack are good radios. Just be sure you get one that is programmable because if not you want have it long because you will have thrown it out the window. Radio Shack will probably help you program it for the counties you want in it but if not just let me know and I can help you.

I got my radio at Cowboy Maloney's the summer after Katrina. I paid $14.00 for it. It does the trick for me. I think it is First Alert...not sure though.
I'm gonna try to get one over the next week or two. So many to choose from.
