Remember that most of what you are paying for gas is taxes which are totally out of the control of the gas company, and especially the guy that owns the gas station. In the 70's I worked at a Union 76 station where we LOST a cent & a half a gallon just to keep folks coming into the store. Tired of high gas prices, vote against liberals.

I totally agree. Lee Raymond, the former CEO of Exxon Mobil, retired with a fat ass pension and millions of dollars. Those millions came at the expense of us, the consumer. I totally hate these greedy CEOs and what they represent. I also hate that government gets involved. Therefore, we the consumer should decide.

Does gas ever drop 14 cents in 2 hours? Hell know maybe in a months time.. Gas was in the 2.70 range 2 weeks ago..

It's the weak dollar that's killing us. Investors are hedging into the oil industry to keep from losing money. It's driving up the price.

Just hold onto your hats, MHers. If you haven't received your power bills yet, get ready for another shock. They've "adjusted" their prices due to rising gas prices too. :(

Oh, and I don't expect our "friends" to lower the prices anytime soon. Why should they - no one is forcing their hands.

I'm doing my part...my gas card expired last month, and I didn't notice until this month. I'm down buying gas every 3-4 weeks instead of every 2. Because I've quit driving.

Gas prices are killing the economy. People have to have gas, it's not a luxury. Sure in big cities there are a lot of mass transit options or walking/biking, but in most of the United States it is simply impossible to realistically use mass transit or bikes/walking on a regular basis.

I'm all for CEO's making good money, they have a lot of responsibility with their positions. The rediculous profits the oil companies post are overwhelming though. It's no wonder that oil companies are posting record profits at the time fuel costs are highest. Something seems wrong with the picture though. The lack of reinvestment by the oil companies is a slap in the face too. Sure they all claim to be looking for greener options, etc, etc, but I think we all know how far that goes. The real deal killer for me is that when times start getting harder for them sometime in the future they'll be whining to congress that they need some type of subsidy or tax break because they're having such hard times. I say hard on them they should invest while times are good.

Maybe it will take half of America looking like this:

I realistically ride my bicycle home from work on a regular basis, and once I get my "bike legs" back, I will make the commute both ways. Using alternative forms of transportation is all a matter of simply getting up and doing it.

Cars are not the end-all, be-all of transportation.

And another thing: If I can make an 18-mile trip home from work on a bicycle, then anyone in even moderately good health ought to be able to ride 3-5 miles to and from work in the city.

Like I said, it's all a matter of what you're willing to do.

Good points, but people who have to go out and see clients or run errands or whatever for their employer during the day are going to have a hard sell to their boss that they are riding a bike to Office Depot, the bank, etc.

Also, some people's job requires them to be in a car. ;)

Just a few days ago at my apartment complex, I saw a fellow Soldier unloading a fairly high-end road bike, complete with aero bars, from his car after work. I asked him if he had ever considered riding to work at Camp Shelby, and he said,"It's too far.":smt102

Now, I've been through the drive thru at a bank on my bicycle. Didn't even phase the teller. Did it on a lunch break.

I have ordered at a drive throu window on a bike numerous times when I was younger. I used to ride my motorcycle through the drive through a lot when I was in college too.

Thinking back on my childhood bicycle days I remember riding by a car wash one time and through the parking lot. I was on a 10 speed street type bike at the time, and I made the mistake of driving over a grate not realizing the bars were running the same direction I was going. The next thing I knew I was laying out in the parking lot in front of my bike as it stood upright behind me with the front wheel stuck down about halfway in the grates. :smt009 :kekeke:

I think the best though was when some friends and I were riding on Adeline Street with a certain box of Mr. Bubbles making our way to a certain fountain in the downtown vicinity one night. I had pegs on the back of my bike and one of my friends and I got his front wheel too close to my back wheel and cut over towards me because a car was coming and one heck of a screeching crash followed. We both went down hard and got tangled up in the wreckage. The oncoming car happened to be a police car with a female HPD officer. She got out to help us get untangled and check for injuries. Now here we are, 3 or 4 young teenage guys (14 or so) crashed out in the middle of Adeline & S. 10th Ave with a box or two of Mr. Bubbles laying busted open on the road, and my friend that hit me screaming "He got me with those da%$ed Ben Hurs!" He equated my pegs to the spikes on the Ben Hur race chariot from the movie we'd recently seen in school. I was fussing that he cut over on me and crashed us. She got us untangled and calmed down with each other, then we all went on our way and abandoned our "sudsing" mission. His front wheel was warped so I couldn't help but laugh after we got back going and bike wobbled down the road back to meet up with our other friends, and they were all laughing at it when we pulled up. :kekeke:

We did some really dumb stuff as kids, but I wouldn't trade any...well....most of it.:-D

I don't have any solution for the gas prices but I do have a suggestion on how to save a little money in a different area to free up money for gas.

Grocery prices have gone up as well so people are having a hard time staying on any type of budget. There is a ministry called Angel Food where you can buy a box of food that has $60-$70 worth of food for only $30. THERE ARE NO AGE OR INCOME QUALIFICATIONS. This is possible because the national ministry buys in bulk. (500,000 of each item a month)

It is available here in Hattiesburg as well as lots of other communities not only in MS but nationwide.

You can contact me for more info or go to www.christianserve.org (http://www.christianserve.org) and click on Angel Food.

High gas prices don't really bother that much anymore, because I'm not using as much anymore.

I've been riding my bicycle home from Camp Shelby every day, and by doing so, I've cut our household gas expenditure in half. By the summer, I plan to be making this a round trip, once I get my bike set up with proper lighting and high pressure tires.

Speculation is the very thing that causes gas prices to rise. The only time gas has gone up a dollar at any time MS is the days after Katrina. That being said gas will be over 4.00 before the end of summer.

It's easy to decide when something is not a necessity...but gas is a necessity and it makes it hard to "boycott". We can cut down...I know I have. What makes me mad is that I know that they can come up with more vehicles that get better gas mileage. I sometimes think the auto companies and gas companies are in cahoots.
You can look for groceries and everything else to keep increasing in price also...you have to ship that stuff.

The Dave Ramsey show had a caller the other day who was an independent trucker. According to him (and to Dave), most of the truckers are under contract and deliver at a set price. They cannot renegotiate the fuel allowance until their contract expires. This caller stated that most truckers are NOT being paid more due to fuel increases, and that the rise in food prices is not completely justified. He claimed many truckers are going out of business because they are under contract to deliver for a set price that cannot be increased. Anybody have more information on this? Can any truckers out there give us the story?

There's lots more to it than just gas prices....The youngest daughter tells me that farmers are planting more corn. Since she is in the canning business, I figure she knows. I think we can look for grocery prices to really escalate in the near future...so plant your gardens and grow what you can!

Remington

Farmers are planting more corn for ethanol and not planting as much other grains, which causes a shortage of those grains and causes their price to go up. Since more corn is going to ethanol and less to food, the cost of corn goes up....and from that is feed that goes to cows, chickens, etc. and when feed prices go up, dairy prices go up.

I basically ignore it. Nothing I can do about it. Cut back on clothes shopping is all. And DD, no offense, but it's just not realistic for a lot of people around here to ride a bike to get where they need to be. Great for those who can, but the majority- it won't work.

This is what the Sner has to say about trucking...

Things are not good for the independents. If you are truly independent, you pick the loads you want at the price you need. Its the ones who are leased to some companies that are getting screwed ALL companies are charging a "fuel surcharge" but not all of them are passing it on the the owner operators.

Many are parking or trying to sell their tractors. There is no way that I would be an owner and some people believe that this is occurring to get rid of the owner ops. Their point is a control issue. Its easier to control company drivers than independent owner operators.

Most of the produce is hauled by owner ops, and a few companies that specialize in produce. (it's hard to haul and can go bad fast if the driver doesn't know what they are doing)

Food costs are going up because of fuel and other reasons. like the rice shortage, corn shortage due to the ethonal thing, ( which is NOT helping) and supposedly because there is not enough illegals here to pick produce.

Normally, there is not negotiation of contract. You take what you get or take your truck someplace else.

I would leave work right now and go fill up. I might even knock someone out for that cheap of gas.

Just filled up the tank yesterday. It wouldn't be worth the drive for the little bit of gas my tank would hold right now.
