The Bride Wore Very Little (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/21/fashion/21brides.html?_r=1&oref=slogin)
...Ms. DaSilva, 26, thinks of herself as adventurous, but not so brash that she is about to cross a line. Dressing for a wedding as if it were an after-party is accepted among her family and friends. “For my generation, looking like a virgin when you marry is completely unappealing, boring even,” she said. “Who cares about that part anymore?”
Ms. DaSilva is typical of a growing number of brides flouting convention by flaunting their curves. More vamp than virgin, many are selecting gowns that bare a generous expanse of cleavage, midsection, lower back or thigh, temptress styles that may be better suited to a gala or boudoir than to a church or ballroom.
“Brides today absolutely want to look sexy and glamorous,” said Mara Urshel, an owner and the president of Kleinfeld, the venerable Manhattan bridal salon. In recent months, the store has seen a spike in demand for plunging necklines and negligee looks, one that has only intensified since the spring bridal collections began arriving in stores. For brides shopping now for gowns to wear at summer or early fall weddings, “there is a lot of freedom of choice, and these girls exercise every bit of it,” Ms. Urshel said.
Determined to look torrid on their wedding day, they are picking dresses modeled, say, on the one worn by Christina Aguilera, who was married in 2005 in a gown with a plummeting neckline and ruffled fishtail hem. Or maybe the hope is to emulate Sarah Jessica Parker, who, in the forthcoming film version of “Sex and the City,” spills out of the front of her wedding dress....
I was thinking that perhaps anything was better than the strapless trend that every bride has recently squeezed herself into, but I'm not quite so sure...

Whatever happened to the art of looking sexy in a tasteful and appealing way? There is very little dignity left in fashion these days...

Weddings are overratted, anyhow. Too much money spent on the ceremony.
Not that it shouldn't be something to be celebrated, but it's just too much.
I don't mind spending a little on a reception, but all that money for a 30 min (that's LONG) ceremony???

The three dresses pictured with the article are very nice. They don't appear to be inappropriate at all.

My wife and I paid $50 and got married in front of the fountain in downtown Hattiesburg about 8pm at night. We plugged a bubble machine into one of the outlets in the bushes and stew flowers from walmart around the fountain. We wore Hawaiian shirts and jeans, matching flip flops and toenail polish. Best wedding ever.

The first and the last dress in that three photo spread have see-through panels over the mid-riff; if those were the same material that the rest of the dress was made of, I'd agree with you.

The big problem I see with this kind of dress is the girls that are trying to put 50 lbs of potatoes in a 10 lb. sack! The dresses need to be appropriate for the size of the girl. A battleship WILL NOT fit into the berth of a cabin cruiser! :kekeke:

Yea CB... my wife and I got married in Garland Mckinniss' living room 34 years ago, and spent nothing, did not have it to spend.
Now that was a good old preacher.. used to be at that little church right off Edwards St on Eufala St.
Well let me just say if I had the body.. LOL I would be sporting it.. LOL But those dresses were ugly...
I like how the dress barely covers the tramp stamp.

okay, I want y'all to know how much I want to be a conributing member on this site with good information to offer. So, I just FORCED myself to sign up on theknot.com ... just so I could do research for this thread... and only for that reason... I definitely did not do it because I love wedding stuff :kekeke:
But really, as far as the dress thing- I say it's "your day" and you (the bride) get to wear whatever the hell you want, especially if it's being payed for with your own money. For me, I'm fairly traditional... I want to look classy and sophisticated on my day, BUT I don't want to look like a prude... When I walk down that aisle I want my hubby to be to think "God, what a beautiful woman I'm about to marry!". So, during my "research" on theknot, I found a few dresses I like :)

That's what I said about owning a yacht, CB. But if you got it, flaunt it. It's all relative. If you have $100 mil, you gonna buy "transportion" or a BMW 700 series?:smt023

I love both of those dresses. It seems as if the majority of brides wear strapless gowns.
Lord, I got married in the late 80's...It was absolutely beautiful in the era, but now when I look at my pictures all I see is big hair and shoulder pads. Having a "V" in the back was in style then.

Lips, those dresses are both gorgeous.... I have to admit that I enjoy lookind at pretty wedding stuff too, but if I ever get married, I just want to run off and elope and maybe have a nice little reception later... I just can't see how so much money is spent on weddings!
Back to the topic, Fuzzis, I agree with you... Those dresses were not what I would call classy or tasteful for a bride to wear at a wedding. Oh well, to each her own...

I too look back at my wedding pictures and think how in the world did I actually think my bridesmaids dresses were pretty! My gown was beautiful but my hair.....now thats a different story! I think we used 2 cans of hairspray!! I could have used my head as a weapon. We didnt really spend too much on my whole wedding. I bought my gown from tux tails and veils when they were going out of business. Got a 1500 gown for 350. My moms friend altered and made my veil for 50. Cakes were baked by a church member so she gave us a deal. Food was all brought in from family. So were decorations.
Now my brothers wedding 3 years ago was expensive!! But it didnt top my brother in laws last november. That was a celebrity style wedding! I would have hated to see the bill for it!! I know the rehearsal dinner my inlaws paid for was 45 a plate and there were atleast 50 people there, if not more!

I totally agree. Two best weddings I've ever been to: one happened on a catamaran in the middle of Lake Tahoe at sunset. For 30 people, an horderve buffet, the cake, and the ceremony was $1,500. Awesomely good time. The other one had the family at the ceremony at the civil commissioner of marriages (about 10 people), followed by a full-on party for about 100 people at Tahoe. Both were low-key and low-stress...just lots of fun for everyone.
I've told friends that if I ever get married, to expect a party...lots of booze and good food and good friends.

I'm torn between a traditional church wedding, or a beach wedding. If it's a beach wedding, I want it in the spring or fall, because I do NOT want to be hot!!! Course even if it's a church wedding, I still don't want it anytime between May and October. Too warm around here. I do want something simple. I want it small and intimate. I don't want tons of people there... only people closest to me that I'll actually care for them to come. If I do a beach wedding, then I want to be in a simple empire waist chiffon dress, flowers in my hair, no shoes. And hubby-to-be in khaki pants and a white linen button up. (yeah, I haven't thought mcuh at all about my wedding ;) ) ha!

Lips, Rhett and I were married at the Friendship Oak on USM's campus in Long Beach. It's right across the street from the beach. It's one of the oldest oaks in MS and is huge. It has a deck built up all around it. It even survived Katrina! I love the looks I get when I tell people we were married in a tree house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big Daddy and I got married at my parents home in Mobile. My uncle, a minister, married us with some family and friends. We had an awesome fun reception and wound up at Judge Roy Bean's place in Fairhope! Awesome, and slightly redneck, I loved it.
Of course, we got up and went fishing for our honeymoon!:laugh: I think chartering the boat cost more than the wedding.

When me and my wife got married in 1995, I don't really remember what she wore, but that was due to the night before. But hey I made it to the alter on time.

This one is gorgeous! Sexy, not trampy, and just beautiful.
Lips, no shoes? Heck, that is my kind of wedding. We were married in front of the J.P. and spent the bulk of the money on our honeymoon. We went to Nasheville and then over to Memphis. We had a great time and would not have had much of a honeymoon if we would have paid for a large expensive wedding. I don't have the photos people have doing the big wedding thing, but I have a good enough memory to always remember that we ARE married and that's what counts. I can't see spending thousands on weddings knowing that about 70% end in divorce anyway. That expensive wedding does not guarantee a good marriage.

I have one question. Where is the church in all of this stage of "undress" I would guess that basically the wedding is just renting "the hall" to put on the show. From the posted wedding pictures it started with the prom look and now has gone into lingerie come-on. Yep, old fashioned in that the vows and faith should be the high point of the wedding, not the stage of undress of the bride.
