View Full Version : Openly racial discrimination in the 'burg

I went by Wu's for lunch today. They're closed. A new place has opened up in the building called "Bangcok Cafe". In the window was a sign that read "waitresses Korean staff wanted", first off I though Bangkok was in Thailand, not Korea, but isn't it illegal specify a racial background when hiring? Could someone bring suit if they were turned down for employment because they were of the wrong race? the sign is clear evidence of the bias.

The living Constitution has determined that only caucasians can be guilty of racism. I think this falls into the category of affirmative action.:smt023

Back on topic, yes 58ford, that is open discrimination. I have seen it in action more than once in the Burg and it is sad!

I can tell you about more discrimation in the burg from a well known sushi bar in West Hattiesburg (Around where salad bowl was). They play favorites with the asian servers, giving them more hours and as many hours as they want and let the white servers pick up what's left

For me, the 'Asian' type restaurants are themed. The whole experience is a show. I see it no different than casting a role in a show. If you're looking for a black man for a role, you advertise for a black man. An asian woman, advertise for an asian woman. Just how I see it. I don't think I'd trust sushi coming from a bunch of white people. Not that they couldn't do it, it just wouldn't seem right.

Yes, that is illegal. That would be like, for instance, Crescent City advertising for "servers, caucasian staff wanted". Somebody over there needs to review the EEOC laws.

BFOQ Bona Fide Occupational Qualification... that is the language where a restaurant could get race (nationality, age) restrictions on hiring. In this case, it would probably not withstand the test, as its a Thai restaurant and they are asking for Koreans. If they were asking for Thais, such that it would create an authentic dining experience, it would be allowed. If they were asking for a Thai chef, not in view of customers, that would be illegal.

You have a good point, CB. But then Greek restaurants don't have Greek servers. The Italian Market Restaurant, a very fine Italian restaurant decked out in full Italilan regalia here, has no Italitan cooks nor Italian waitresses or waiters. Sure doesn't affect the ambiance nor the quality of the meal. No. Racism is racism. Can't have an all men's country club, nor an all white one. Can't have an all white, anything. Therefore can't have an all Italian, Greek, Asian nor African American........wait. You CAN have an all African American anything and label it as such.:smt102 But not the others. That would be racism.

I can certainly see hiring a cook/chef who is chinese and trained in authentic chinese cuisine. However, with a waitress or waiter it shouldn't matter what race as long as they can do the job.

So if Emeril Lagosse is cooking New Orleans or Cajun food you'd object? He's from New York. Yeah, I'd demand to see Justin Wilson. I'm just kidding with you. I know how you feel. I'm the same way. Yes ma'am. I Know that. That's my point. You don't have to be Italian to cook good Italian food nor Asian to cook good Asian food. And you don't have to be Asian to be a great server in an Asian restaurant. If it's good, I'll come back. If it sucks, I won't. Don't care if it's run by a bunch of pigmies.

And if they do turn you down and you take it to them in court they will have to not only hire but also pay you your wages you would have earned at the job and also interest and penalties on the same money... So if it took them 5 months they would have to cough up the money you would have earned in that time frame... Including the tips...

So yeah I dare you... And then after they hire you pick a fight with the cook and threaten them with another lawsuit... Afterwards just quit... and walk out on your shift saying they are harassing you in the workplace... Your attorney will be in touch...

When I was a young lad working on my degree from Miss. State, I lived next door to a Chinese restaurant. Probably the best one in S'ville. I was so close that when I went out on my back porch I could ask Mrs. Alice what was on the buffet (that was her name... or at least that is what she told us anyway. It is strange how these Chinese folks all have American sounding names). Anyway I ate there so much that she even knew when my birthday was so on my b'day I never had to pay. I was needing a part time job at the time and noticed she had a "help wanted" sign in the window. I inquired about it and she told me to come by later that day and she would talk to me about it. Later I realized that she just wanted to tell me later because I was eating there with some of my Kappa Alpha Psi friends cause when I went back she said, "Job no good for you. Me needa one dishwasha. You no good for the dishes." I asked why and she said, "I needa one black people or one Mexican people for the dishes." I was speechless. I never expected a "Chinese" person to be so stereotypical and yet was so nice to all her customers. It was kinda wierd and I realized that me thinking it was odd for a Chinese lady to NOT be capable of being stereotypical was in fact proof that me myself was stereotyping her thinking she couldn't be... o hell, I'm confusing myself now but I'm sure you all can figure out what I am trying to say. The whole situation was kinda strange, funny, and disturbing all at the same time.

I know... I guess it was a poor attempt at tasteless humor on my part.... But, I dated a girl named "Winnie" in college... I can't even pronounce her real name... she got the name "Winnie," she told me, when she was on the plane coming over here and the airlines was showing Winnie the Pooh as the movie. She loved the movie and thought that "Winnie" was about as American as it was. Soooo, she went by Winnie Chow. Made some damn good shrimp egg rolls too...
