1943 Guide to Hiring Women
The following is an excerpt from the July 1943 issue of Transportation Magazine. This was written for male supervisors of women in the work force during World War II.

"Eleven Tips on Getting More Efficiency Out of Women Employees: There's no longer any question whether transit companies should hire women for jobs formerly held by men. The draft and manpower shortage has settled that point. The important things now are to select the most efficient women available and how to use them to the best advantage.

Here are eleven helpful tips on the subject from Western Properties:

1. Pick young married women. They usually have more of a sense of responsibility than their unmarried sisters, they're less likely to be flirtatious, they need the work or they wouldn't be doing it, they still have the pep and interest to work hard and to deal with the public efficiently.

2. When you have to use older women, try to get ones who have worked outside the home at some time in their lives. Older women who have never contacted the public have a hard time adapting themselves and are inclined to be cantankerous and fussy. It's always well to impress upon older women the importance of friendliness and courtesy.

3. General experience indicates that "husky" girls - those who are just a little on the heavy side - are more even tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters.

4. Retain a physician to give each woman you hire a special physical examination - one covering female conditions. This step not only protects the property against the possibilities of lawsuit, but reveals whether the employee-to-be has any female weaknesses which would make her mentally or physically unfit for the job.

5. Stress at the outset the importance of time the fact that a minute or two lost here and there makes serious inroads on schedules. Until this point is gotten across, service is likely to be slowed up.

6. Give the female employee a definite day-long schedule of duties so that they'll keep busy without bothering the management for instructions every few minutes. Numerous properties say that women make excellent workers when they have their jobs cut out for them, but that they lack initiative in finding work themselves.

7. Whenever possible, let the inside employee change from one job to another at some time during the day. Women are inclined to be less nervous and happier with change.

8. Give every girl an adequate number of rest periods during the day. You have to make some allowances for feminine psychology. A girl has more confidence and is more efficient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and wash her hands several times a day.

9. Be tactful when issuing instructions or in making criticisms. Women are often sensitive; they can't shrug off harsh words the way men do. Never ridicule a woman - it breaks her spirit and cuts off her efficiency.

10. Be reasonably considerate about using strong language around women. Even though a girl's husband or father may swear vociferously, she'll grow to dislike a place of business where she hears too much of this.

11. Get enough size variety in operator's uniforms so that each girl can have a proper fit. This point can't be stressed too much in keeping women happy."

This one still applies today, or atleast where I work. If I didnt have a daily schedule and check off list for 90% of my teachers they would be lost! I have to remind them to do almost everything if I dont have it laid out for them. But the reason why is that people are lazier in the workplace then they used to be. Either that or we just tend to hire lazy people

That one does apply but not only to women. Some males and females are self starters and some need to be told what to do step by step . I have a male who works for me and I have to remind him of the simplest things daily.

Yeah Im sure it does apply to both....but we only have 2 men at my work so I can only say that the women that work there are lazy. 1 is the owner, he can be lazy if he wants.....he has us management to do his work. The other is an old retired man that comes in to help with maintenance and I swear he has more energy with the children then the teachers do on most days :smt102

This is soooo cool! Let me be sure I got it straight.

1. Single chicks got other things on their minds.
2. Stay at home ladies are b*tches if they have to work.
3. Big girls are better workers.
4. They all need to get their oil changed on a regular basis.
5. Take away their phones and separate them from other women because they can't keep their mouths shut and women just don't get along.
6. They lack initiative and need direction from a man.
7. They get bored easily.
8. They're more worried about their appearance than their job.
9. They gonna cry if you jump their ass.
10. They don't like cussing unless it's their old man cussing at them.
11. Again, they gotta look good, so put the hotties in short skirts and the big girls in baggies.

1. Men generally have little social skills and cannot distinguish between what is appropriate behavior/communication and what is not. They need females to teach them how to be civilized. (Example: See CR's post above)

Hey now, I don't agree with them. At least not all of them. #4 is a little off.

2. Be aware that most males over estimate their abilities. They tend to believe that they are "the man", and are intellectually superior to females.
So when the male worker screws up, females need to be prepared to handle the situation as needed.

I have to admit I prefer not to work with other women due to the hormonal stuff and yes, I get snippy and if someone else is pmsn then it will probably be on. We do gossip more than men do on the job. DANG! I am honest huh? Men are easier to work with and for, at least this is what I have discovered in my years of work history. Women will stab you in the back to get that promotion where as most men say f it and quit if they don't get it. Sorry all ladies, but, I as a female will admit most of us CAN be bit/hes when we want and no one can stop us. We are women hear us roar!

:laugh::laugh::laugh: You guys are too funny! The thing that I find most amusing is that whoever wrote that list was really pretty accurate from I have seen in the workplace. I am thankful that I work in a predominately male workforce for all of the reasons that XC9 mentioned. I really can't stand working around catty-snotty-back stabbing-insecure-jealous-makes a mountain out of a molehill-whiny-egotistical-lying-skanky-holier than thou-know it all- crabby women!!!!!!! And the sexretaries just make my skin crawl! Give me a 100 man workforce anyday over a desk next to a female. :smt023

That being said, they are not all bad, but man some women just need to get oever themselves!!! I have met some very dear female friends in the workplace who are like family to me and I have had to deal with some who I hope that I never have to deal with again... :-D

It used to amaze me that two men could go into an office, and you'd hear fifteen minutes of yelling and cussing and desk thumping and name-calling, and they'd come out slapping each other on the back and go to lunch together. Then two women would get in a tiff over something really stupid and not speak for weeks. Or ever again.

I really think this is the key to life. Keep the woman happy, and she does a much better job of keeping you happy. :kekeke:

Having hired my share of women in my life, I can attest that some of those are at least partially accurate. Some of them are blatantly sexist, but some of them, for what it's worth, are spot on.
