Don't fall in one (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080226/NEWS01/802260303/1002)

Let's use this thread to report potholes in Hattiesburg.

Name the location.

Who knows? It might lead to them being fixed.

Route Bronze, Hit, Iraq, Al-Anbar Province. Too many to list. Just repave the road. Although it is not in Hattiesburg, it is still a concern.

The city is getting ready to start work on Hardy St. before much longer. It is my understanding that they have sewer/water work to be done from 21st to 49 and the road will be made wider...5 lanes in that area. The paving will go from Hwy 49 to downtown.

34th Avenue near Hardy Street (next to Town and Country Cleaners) is a mess with potholes.

Surely this is due in part to the Hardy Street project, since I've seen workers in that area.

However, further south on 34th Avenue, near Beverly Lane, is a pothole that will jar your vehicle out of alignment if you hit it just right.

That whole lot situation is quite baffling. It would seem that the city should acquire an easement and pave a strip of road through there. It is an accident waiting to happen.

The roads are horrible in hattiesburg! I tore up my firebird 2x because of the bad roads. Didnt help that it was lowered even more then it was supposed to be. Yep I'd hit a pothole that I was not able to go around and bam!! Something would scrape under my car and tear up UGH

Manholes!!!! I hate running over deep manholes, where the asphalt is 10 inches higher than the manhole. There are two of them on 7th street. I go around or try to straddle them.

That's true. Lots of people (including me) use that parking lot as a westbound route to get to the traffic light at 40th Avenue next to Regions Bank.

And likewise use it as a eastbound route off 40th.

I'm in the same situation. Making a left onto Hardy street from 28th is not possible, so I wind up having to go to Arlington loop, and then making a right onto 37th. 34th is not for through traffic, so I have to go down 37th and go through the parking lot, in which I'll either go to the light at 38th or 40th. Either fix the parking lot, or make Arlington Loop connect to 40th by having it cut through behind the parking lot. If it's private property, let's find out who owns it so we know who to hold responsible when there's damage done to our cars.

And likewise use it as a eastbound route off 40th.And now that the crossovers on Hardy St. have been blocked off, especially the one right there at Blockbuster, you have to go through that parking lot to get to the light so you can go west. More and more traffic is being funneled through the parking lot, so the city should take some responsibility to maintain a traffic lane or 2 through there.

And while they are working on it they can put a light up at 37th and hardy (road right next to blockbuster) so that people can head west without having to cut through the parking lot. :-D

You shouldn't drive through a parking lot with the intention of using it as a shortcut. Yes, I am aware that you can't turn left or right at some intersections on Hardy, but its not an excuse to turn a parking lot into a street. From 28 to 37th there are at least 2 intersections with lights.

wilebill
02-27-2008, 06:04 PM
Why do you have to do a U turn? You can turn left or right at the lights.Because if you're at Blockbuster, and want to go west, you either go through the Roses parking lot to get to the light at 38th, or since you suggested it wasn't good to use that parking lot as a street, go east until you get to a light, then go back west. Even if you use 37th Ave. and want to go west, in most cases you can't make it across Hardy to go west, so most folks go through the parking light to get to the light at 38th which is much safer and easier to do.

Well if you are at Block Busters it would be acceptable to go through the lot and use the light between Starbucks and Little Tokyo's. That is a different situation as you are patronizing an establishment that shares that parking lot.

That is a different situation as you are patronizing an establishment that shares that parking lot. That still doesn't help those folks who use S 37th Ave. and want to go west. At some times of the day, it's dang near impossible to turn left from there onto Hardy St.

The way it's setup you would think that the city expects us to make the left onto 37th from Arlington Loop, take it to Lincoln, and turn right onto 40th to get to the post office. Making a left onto Hardy from 37th is a joke! I feel for those that live on 37th and have to travel West to get to work.

I attended a meeting at Jackie Dole Center last night and it was reported the city has one truck dedicated solely to the repair of potholes. It was stated that after heavy rains, up to four trucks would be dispatched. Not sure but believe they said to report to Bennie Seller's office and within 24 to 48 hours, the pothole should be filled. The amount of rain and severity of loosened blacktop may take priority. One side note: what the heck will it take to grind down the large speed bumps on Hardy? There are two east of 38th Ave intersection on Hardy which should be address as well as other. Hopefully with all the work on Hardy this will be done, PLEASE????

That number is 601-545-4500. Mr. Sellers is reported to have said that the city's ultimate goal is to have potholes patched within 24 hours of a report.

I, however, know that they have failed this goal within the last 24 hours.

Simply Me, I was at the meeting too. Some people have to realize they HAVE to call the action line, 601-545-4500 to report the pothole in order to get it fixed. I have had people bitch about potholes and I would ask did they call to report it and they would say "no, I figured someone else would." If everyone does that then the hole goes unrepaired...go figure!

On another note, Bennie Sellers sure got his butt reamed good at the meeting. I was actually beginning to feel a little sorry for him. Don't think I have ever seen him turn so red..I know his BP had to spike there for a few minutes.

Absolutely. Call and report it.

I cannot tell you the number of times I have called Lamar County over the years regarding potholes, and I will say they have always been quick to respond in making the repair.

Which may explain why we are cutting through the University Mall parking lot.

And dodging their potholes (which are probably made worse by all the traffic that cannot make U-turns on the streets).

The concrete at the bumps has already been sawed and the concrete will be removed and replaced later in the middle of March.

This is the bad time of the year for pot holes. Cold weather and long rainy days cause the pot holes.

I think that one was fixed. There are two large patches of asphalt that are new on the road. It sounds like you hit a pothole caused by the gravel being worked out of the patch from the sewer line repair. Did you notice if there was a gravel patch where you had the flat?
