Black pups face doggie discrimination (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23472518/)

Dark-coated pooches tend to linger in shelters the longest

...To the uninitiated, the idea seems so strange — doggie discrimination? But among those in animal rescue circles, the phenomenon is commonplace enough to have earned its own name: "black dog syndrome."

"There's not a lot of that type of statistics on many aspects of sheltering," says Kim Intino, the director of animal sheltering issues for the Humane Society of the United States. "But I think that every person that has worked in a shelter can attest that in shelters animals with black coats can be somewhat harder to adopt out — or to even get noticed."

Even after a year had passed at a Los Angeles animal shelter, no one had noticed Estelle. Except, of course, for the staff; they fawned over the big black dog and her gentle demeanor. They started letting Estelle roam the office during the day, which let one couple see her in action — outside her cage and calmly interacting with people. They fell for her, and took her home.

But not every black dog is lucky enough to get that kind of special attention, says Madeline Bernstein, the president of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Los Angeles....

Guess No-Halo is lucky I wanted Cobbler. :kekeke:

I don't like white dogs... They always want to eat expensive sandwiches and ride around in a Prius... and they smell like wet dog.

LMAO...

I've always been partial to brown or black dogs... maybe a little white mixed in for decoration.

I love animals and I have never even considered not wanting one because it is black. That is just weird to me.

My dog is brindle, but I saw a black dog on the internet at the Meridian Boxer Rescue the other day and I wanted her so bad. I'm still thinking about her.

She would be a perfect match for my dog. I thought she was beautiful.

Wow! What a link. Anyway, this will hopefully quell the 'dog-tossing' moniker us uniformed people have!

I prefer black dogs because they don't get fleas.

I have a black dog and if I don't use Frontline she gets fleas. I wish she didn't though it would save me a ton of money each year. What I have noticed about black dogs is that people just assume they are boys and white dogs are called girls.

It's an old aphorism/joke. Black dogs don't get fleas (because you can't see 'em. get it?)

When I lived at USM I found a cute little black kitten who needed a home. I had only been in town a couple of months, and I didn't know about Southern Pines. I called the adoption place across the street and asked if they'd take him. They sounded like they might at first, then they asked what color it was. When I said it was black, the girl said they couldn't take it. I asked why, and she said because it hadn't been tested for feline diseases. (They're a vet, so why couldn't they do that?) So I said okay, fair enough. I took it to another vet and had it tested. Everything tested out fine.

I called them back and told them that. This was another person who answered. She asked what color it was, and when I said black she said they couldn't take it. I asked why, because it had been given a clean bill of health and everything and that just didn't make sense. She said they wouldn't take it because they only take cats when they get the full litter including the mother, so that they know where the cat came from. Yeah right. That doesn't even make sense. They're a bunch of kitty racists. I haven't done a dime's worth of business with the "Love at First Sight" adoption center since then.

They were assholes to me one time before that when I took another animal in. I was a broke college student and they didn't think I had the money, and before I even said anything the receptionist barked out that I had to pay in full before they would take the animal back. I said that was fine, and then I was going to ask her if I could pay for half of it with a check and half with cash. I didn't get past the word "half" before she barked at me again--- "NO I TOLD you the full payment has to be made beforehand!" Extremely rude and presumptious. I said, "If you'd let me finish my sentence, you'd know that's not what I'm asking you for." She was a superbitch. Then after the situation with the black kitten I wrote them off for good. I use All Animal Clinic in Oak Grove. Good folks.

IF I like the dog and it is what I want, I don't care what color it is. I don't pick my friends by color either...if I like you, it doesn't matter if you are purple polka-dot with one big green eye, if we get along and have things in common then it is a go...color doesn't matter, it is what is in the heart that is important! My little Boo is black!

When I was a kid, we had a black cat named Thomas. When I lived in Jones Co. a few years back we had a black dog named Fiddler. And then those evil Chinese people poisoned my poor Shammie with that bad cat food! He was a beautiful black & white tuxedo cat.

This made me think of our sweetheart, Boris. He was half Siamese, with Siamese build and voice, but all black -- beautiful, glossy fur. What a great guy.
