What: Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

When: April 5, 2008

Where: Trustmark Park, Pearl, Mississippi

Time: 9:00

Cost: $25 if you wish to participate, $30 if you want to support the cause but don't actually want to race

On April 5, 2008, the Central Mississippi Susan G. Komen affiliate (http://www.komen-ms.org/) will hold the 2008 Race for the Cure. Registration opens at 8:00, and the actual race begins at 9:00.

Cost to enter the race is $25. Proceeds from this race stay in Mississippi to help women HERE fight breast cancer.

Several of us here from myhattiesburg are members of Race Teams or have registered as individuals. If you'd like to support our fundraising efforts with a tax-deductible donation, feel free click on the following links:

If you've never been to a Race for the Cure event, it is an emotional, powerful experience. You'll see women in pink t-shirts and pink hats...those are survivors. At the survivor ceremony that takes place before the race, they recognize how long these women have survived. Some as short as a week (because they've just been diagnosed), some as long as 40 years.

During the race, you'll see people with pink placards on their backs that say "I race in Memory of..." (mine always says "Sherian McMillin-Ma- 02/27/95") and "I race in Celebration of..." (mine say "Meta Matthews" and "Janet Moses"). There are so many women...as well as men who are there to support their wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters. Children running ahead and coming back.

You don't have to "race"...it's a run/walk.

Currently, there are 435 people registered for the Race, a number I find to be a little on the...sad side. We'd love to have you join us.

It really is a great thing. We have two races in the state of MS...this one in Jackson and one in Tupelo in October. (I've made the drive to do that one...as well as the one in Birmingham...and the one in New Orleans, which was the most fun)

We need one in South Mississippi as well because the money doesn't just stay in Mississippi...it stays in the area in which it's raised. I wonder how much trouble it would be to get an affiliate started in South Mississippi. There's got to be enough people say on the coast to make that work.

Just bumping this up...

Warriors for Julie are currently in 10th place as the top fundraising team, and they met 50% of their fundraising goal. I'm currently at 60% of my goal.

Any little bit you can contribute is greatly appreciated.

Warriors for Julie are still at 50% of their fundraising goal; I've made it to 71% of mine. There are currently just over 800 people registered for the race!

There's still time to register or to donate to the cause. Your support is appreciated.

Just a bump.

Warriors for Julie are now at 54% of their goal, and I'm still at 71%. The race is this weekend. If you can find a couple of spare dollars, there are lots of women in MS who will appreciate it. Thanks.

I would be more than willing to go with you if I dont have anything to do this Saturday but I dont want to walk/run I would probably pass out and need medical assistance. I think I need to start my exercise program before I walk a marathon. LOL.

3.1 miles isn't a marathon. :smt118 And you're more than welcome to come with me. Regardless.

Race for the Cure really is a moving experience. I don't quite know how to explain it, but it is a beautiful thing. (and I've always thought that single men would do well to participate. There are TONS of women there. Easy pickin's. :kekeke:)

This morning I am reminded of how important these things are. One of the women that I race in celebration of (meaning that she's beat cancer) learned this morning that her cancer is back, and the outlook is not good. :smt009

Join us in Jackson this Saturday or donate via one of the links in the original post. Your support is greatly appreciated.
