I was in wal-mart to pick up a few things and I saw something that made me realize.....why?
They sometimes (at the one on 98w) have someone standing at the door to check the tickets when the alarm goes off (loss prevention or something like that, they have the same people at Hudson's and Sam's) but What I don't get is, why do they just look at the reciept, not look IN THE FREAKIN bags when the alarm goes off. I Watched the woman look at the receipt, tell the people "ok you can go" and the alarm went off AGAIN when the cart went thru the door. The woman never made another motion to the cart, asking to look at the bags, check thru the shit. OMG, your basically paying people not to care if people steal from you or not! I've watched in the pay where people walk thru the door with the alarm going off and the greeter looked but didn't care to stop the person. They just ignored it and went on.
I just don't understand how people can take money to perform a job, and then do nothing. But what I really don't get is, how corporations pay these people to do nothing and keep on paying them to do nothing! Could someone please shed some light on this? Because If i had a job and didn't do my duties, I would hope to be fired not rewarded by keeping me to work that same job that I am not doing.

You realize how much they make right? If they catch two people out of 1000, they have proved themselves to be a good investment. You just have to look at it on a large scale like Wal-Mart does. In terms of billions.

Ya maybe if they catch one person stealing a 50 inch plasma and another stealing a washing dryer combo could it be a good investment, but for those people not to care if people are stealing by NOT checking the bags, they should be let go and replaced with people who do care or get rid of the damn alarms at the door "You have activied Wal-mart inventory control center. You may proceed because we don't give a damn unless you are trying to steal a 50 inch plasma TV or a washer/dryer combo. Thank you and have a good day!"

I never stop at the dinging deal, and I dare a WalMart employee to try to stop me... I need some money...
Most of the time when they go off it is an error. The scan thing didn't deactivate the tag. Most of the losses from places like that don't come from people stealing but from internal theft and operational errors.
There's a Wal Mart in Richland right off 49, and I've been in there a handful of times. (Esp. when my husband and I used to meet in Jackson for the weekends when he lived down here and I lived in Yazoo Shitty.) Anyway, that one dings at me EVERY SINGLE TIME I go into that store. One day we were buying a few things for the weekend, including condoms. It dinged at us, and of COURSE it was the condoms. The old lady dug them out of the bag and started back toward the register to deactivate them--- and for some reason felt it necessary to hold them up over her head to show the curious cashiers what had caused the dinging. I wanted to strangle that old heifer. My face must've turned forty different shades of purple before she finally got back with them and we got the heck out of there.

I don't believe there is any law that states that you must show a receipt at a store when asked. I personally don't stop when the alarm goes off. I pay for all of my stuff. If their equipment is malfunctioning, that is their problem. I'm with CB on this. I could use a little extra spending money.
BTW - I worked for WM for 9 years. I even stopped a few shoplifters. I will tell you that the people working the door (or anywhere else in the store) have no training on loss prevention or self defense. Some shoplifters think nothing of slashing an employee with a razor knife over a $10 theft. These people don't get paid enough to confront a potentially violent criminal. WM should hire a crew of trained professionals to deal with shoplifters, not rely on the underpaid (and often elderly) door greeters to stop shrink. Most stores have 1 LP guy for the entire store. It is more cost efficient to let the thieves go than to risk a lawsuit over a "bad" stop. And the idea that most theft occurs by store employees is definitely true.
I spent a year or so working in loss prevention. You're right that most loss comes from internal theft and/or operational errors.
Most shoplifters just run. Not much you can do if they get out of reach and there don't happen to be any cops nearby, unless you get a tag and a police officer feels like finding them.
I've been stopped a few times. I just let them see my receipt. I don't care. I would, however, prefer that they not find the single most embarrassing item in my bag and hold it up for the world to see. Now if they ever put their hands on me or try to get me back into the store, that would be a problem. They can't do much unless they actually see you take an item, conceal it, and then are able to keep a visual on you until you walk through the front door. If they have that, they can stop you. Of course you can just run and that's pretty much the end of it.

Years ago we had a LP guy that ran marathons for fun. He preferred it when they ran, especially when it was a hot July or August day. By the time they ran a little ways, they were too exhausted to fight.

Walmart on 98 has a super duper great loss prevention guy...he knows his job and does it VERY well...they used to have two guys working per shift but I don't know if they still do or not. This particular guy used to get 4 or 5 shoplifters a day on a very regular basis. He was known to chase them down and tackle them if need be. I know when I worked at the p.d. I had typers cramp often from all the reports I had to do for Walmart shoplifters! :kekeke:
Personally I don't care if they check my bags or not...I havn't stolen anything nor do I mind them looking for themselves....I don't have anything to hide!

By now, you'd think that every shoplifter would just cut out the little radio tag and walk out unannounced. I really question how many shop lifters the gates catch. I know they're a deterrent, but it's just annoying.
If you're stopping me at Walmart to look through MY stuff that I just bought, I feel that's a violation of my privacy. You don't have a right to look through it. If you feel I'm committing a crime, arrest me and I'll see you in court, otherwise, back off, leave me be.

They need to start watchin the night crew and pay attention in the grocery area too. Stuff may not technically get stolen (taken out of the store for later use), but countless items are opened, munched on, and left on the shelves. Happens all the time. Sad part is, even managers at WM know it- and do nothing about it. WM is one of the most apathetic stores I know of in terms of knowing something is wrong, and doing nothing to fix it.
