I often pose questions to my class that have no answers, just to see what they come up with. After discussing the presidential election with my wife the other day, I came up with a doozy that is not appropriate for class, so I thought I would bring it up here:
If there is indeed a chemical reaction in a woman's body that causes erratic behavior once a month (i.e. PMS), is it ethical to elect a woman president...in that the erratic behavior is a result of a chemical reaction and not a choice?
If this chemical reaction is false, and does not exist, are our wives, sisters, mothers, etc. lying to us and making excuses for erratic behavior?
I have nothing against electing a woman president...in fact, if Condoleeza Rice were running, I would certainly vote for her.
However, this question REALLY got me to thinking...would we elect a president whom we KNEW had a chemical imbalance which caused erratic behavior (i.e. bi-polar disorder, manic depression, etc.)?
No.
Then, if PMS is in fact an occurrance in females, then how do we justify electing a female president if a similar chemical imbalance exists which could cause her to make irrational decisions through no fault of her own?
I would love to hear your opinions!

I am so amused when I hear this. Here is a newsflash: Not all women are emotional wrecks. There are plenty of women out there who do not have PMS, and of those that do, it is not a disability. It is not a mental disorder or a disease. Women function in very high level positions everyday, all over the world. How do we know that Hillary has not reached menopause and no longer has a period anyway? It is rather silly to think that a woman can't control herself just because she has a period. Bottom line: Not all women are the same.

Exactly my point.
How do we know (a) if it affects her, (b) if it does, how bad, (c) is it no longer a question because of onset menopause?
How do we ASK these questions? Do we walk up to Hillary and say..."Ahhemm...Excuse me, but..."?
IS it an appropriate question to ask if it will affect her decision making abilities?

We think nothing of electing men...despite the fact that they show us again and again and again that many of them cannot control their baser urges (governors, senators, presidents come to mind). The pursuits engaged in with regard to such seem pretty irrational to me.
As jkspatty has said, PMS affects different women different ways. By the time a woman gets to the place Hillary (or Condi) is, they've learned to control themselves quite well...if they were ever affected in the first place. The fact that a President has a circle of advisers who aren't going to let him or her make a monumental spur of the moment screw up and the fact that presidential decisions are rarely impromptu, makes the question somewhat moot.

I know for a fact that the man in my life suffers from a monthly condition very much like PMS. I don't care if it's proven or not - he is an @55 for about 3-4 days once a month.
But let's be serious... is there a decision that the President makes solely on their own and in the blink of an eye. No. So why the question?
This is a great discussion, but I don't think we have to worry about Clinton making any decisions as President.

It not an appropriate question to ask any more that than it would be appropriate to ask John McCain if his being a POW will affect his decision making skills. I think Mrs Clinton has a record of not letting her emotions control her. She obviously did not let being a female stop her from becoming an attorney or a US Senator. I am really suprised that (supposedly) educated people still think like this.

I don't think PMS is going to cause a nuclear war....However, I think a woman president nagging another world leader may incite a knee-jerk attack on the U.S.!!
Just kidding....it's not the chemical reaction in women that's the problem...It's the scientific fact that their brains are smaller than men's.....
Just kidding....I would really just be worried about a woman being late for all of her appointments because she can't decide what shoes to wear or what dress goes best with these shoes...or what earrings go best with this blouse....etc....

I am really surpised that you would be commenting that "Supposedly" educated people still think like this. Being Educated has nothing to do with this. It is a valid question, much like McCain time in a PoW camp, did it affect his decision making? how about Obama, since you were a member of that church for soo long, how do we know you won't immediately pick them up when your elected and allow the rev. to affect your decision making abilities.
What I am really surpised at is, you took a valid question and turned it into a condemnation of educated people. It was a simple question, answer it or shut up, it is that simple! If you are offended by the question, build a bridge and get over it. We are allowed to discuss trivial and stuff that would never be seen in an election question list. If you don't want to partake, don't. But don't insult people who raise the question or take part themselves.
I had respect for what you were saying, UNTIL you said what I quoted there. As far as I am concerned, your posts on this thread mean nothing if it comes down to flinging insults around.

Actually, uneducated people often make choices, statements, or decisions WITHOUT asking questions. I hope you weren't referring to me...
Also, I WOULD like to ASK McCain if he thinks being a POW would affect his decision making skills. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a serious problem, and can often plague an individual for a LONG time.
It was just a question. Not a statement of my beliefs. A question.

Most of the questions that are asked of presidental people are ridculous. If you weren't offended, you wouldn't have insulted "supposedly" educated people. Are free thinkers not allowed to post questions anymore? are you starting a communist society with big brother to read our thoughts and report us to the purity police?
Basically, I think this thread should include more than just gender, let's take in Hillary's past. Hell, while we are at it, let's take in everyone's past, check their internet history and see who looks at porn nightly.
All of this means nothing because we will be blinded by the magical words of one politican to promise this and that. But they won't deliver and the middle american will be left holding the bag of screwed up reality. oh well, i guess it is true, only two things promised in life is death and taxes.

By the time most women get to the US Senate, or being a head of state (Thatcher, et. al.) they are past an age where this is an issue. And as Fuzzis pointed out, you don't get to be Secretary of State without the ability to keep your personal issues under control.
As for Hillary and being emotional, I've always heard she has a terrible temper and has been known to throw things. But she doesn't do it in public.

Thank you Lips, this was the foundation behind my question. It is a biological phenomenon that does affect decision-making (or AT LEAST the thought process). To what extent is another layer of the question.
As stated by Fuzzis, no one questions men regarding this type of biological process. So, the issue is gender-specific. Which makes it a touchy subject. Which is why I think the issues needs discussion (discussion does not mean conclusion, by the way).
Moreover, I think men DO have some biological traits that could get them into trouble and affect their decision making skills...Bill Clinton, Spitzer, and a few others come to mind. However, this biological trait (wanting to hump everything that moves) is not time-specific (i.e. monthly) and certainly not gender specific (I know PLENTY of female horn-dogs). Hence, the issue at hand.
:smt001
Nice question. But Hillary's not a woman; she's a robot.
Besides, men can have hormonal changes too. They're just not as predictable.

At least with women, if it's going to be a problem, then schedule a couple of days in Crawford. Or Camp David. Or wherever. Our current President doesn't have a problem with taking a couple of days off.

No, asking it isn't appropriate. Makes no difference. As long as we elect men with penis' then electing a woman who MAY have PMS a few days a month should be pretty safe.
