Our pastor lost his firefighter son in a blaze in North MS years ago. He wrote a book called the Omega Bell detailing the events up to and after the fire. I know they named the Greenville Fire Station after his son. It is a great book for firefighters and civilians alike. If anyone would like a copy to read let me know.

I saw this on the news...it made me think of all the firefighters who lost their lives at the furniture store fire in the Carolina's or Va. last year or the year before...Prayers are being sent out for all the families...I pray daily that the Good Lord protects our local firefighters....they do so much and get little respect!

Our Firefighters and Law Enforcement personnel go out there and risk their lives to keep the rest of us safe. It is a sad day when we lose any of those hard working men and women. God bless their families and fellow firefighters, and may he keep them all safe in his arms.

Fire fighters and Law Enforcement officers put their lives on the line for us every day with little thanks from the community. It is bad enough to lose one of our brave firefighters when the fire is an accident, but we have lost so many when someone was making meth or trying to collect insurance. These people should be punished much more severely than they are. My heart and prayers go out to the families and friends of these brave men and women.

We really don't see all of those that lost their lives. My dad was a firefighter. My mom told me once that his lungs were "scorched" when he saved a little boy from a fire here in the burg. I guess I need to ask her more about it while I have a chance. He died years later from emphysema...but he was a smoker and it was laid to that. He was only in his 50's when he died. Geez, I'm older than that now!

Thanks to all those of you who put your lives on the line everyday for us. Prayers go out to you and your families. But also know that you are very much appreciated even if it isnt said too often.

Hey HippiChic...
My Aunt in Derby, MS went to school with Bevon Joe, they are really close. It's a wonderful book from a father's broken heart...but he's ever so proud of his son. Thanks for mentioning the book and the story.

THREE FIREFIGHTER HURT IN MARYLAND

http://cms.firehouse.com/web/online/News/Thee-Firefighters-Hurt-in-Maryland-Blaze/46$59365

Fire tore through multiple apartments early Saturday, killing one person and seriously injuring three firefighters who were in the building as it partially collapsed, a fire official said.
Firefighters rescued at least four people from the Halpine View Apartments, but two of them had to save themselves by jumping out a second-floor window after the third floor fell onto the second, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer said.
They and a colleague who escaped out a door were taken to a hospital with burns and other injuries. Piringer described their wounds as serious but not life-threatening.

The Charleston 9

POOR TRAINING LED TO DEATHS

"The final analysis of this incident does not suggest that any of the firefighters who lost their lives, or any of the surviving members of the Charleston Fire Department, failed to perform their duties as they had been trained or as expected by their organization. The analysis indicates that the Charleston Fire Department failed to adequately prepare its members for the situation they encountered at the Sofa Super Store Fire."

Firefighters are the most under appreciated public servants. They risk their lives for the sake of others and should be highly commended for their bravery and courage.

North Carolina Firefighter, Deputy Killed on Highway

A tractor-trailer driving through blinding fog and smoke on a coastal highway in North Carolina struck a sheriff's deputy and a firefighter directing traffic early Saturday, killing them, authorities said.
The wreck happened around 5:15 a.m. Saturday near a controlled burn at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Onslow County along the central North Carolina coast, Highway Patrol Lt. Everett Clendenin said.
The truck had slowed because of the poor visibility when it struck deputy Steven Boehm, 36, and firefighter Gene Thomas, 52, Clendenin said.
"This loss is a great tragedy for everyone. These men served honorably," Sheriff's Capt. Rick Sutherland said.

Rhode Island Firefighter Dies During Search

TIVERTON, R.I. -- Tiverton firefighters are mourning the death of one of their own. A veteran firefighter, First Class Gerald R. Leduc, died Sunday night while on duty.
He was a 25 year member of the fire department, and was assigned to Station 4 on East Road in Tiverton. Leduc was on a dive-mission, searching for a man who went overboard on Stafford Pond, when he went into cardiac arrest.
The rescue effort began around 7:00 Sunday night, when hordes of boats and divers raced to the Tiverton pond to join the search. Eyewitness News was first on the scene after the man went overboard. Emergency crews first got the call from people on shore who heard a woman screaming for help to save the man.
"We jumped in our boat out there," said Jeff Rego, a bystander who joined in the rescue, "and got out there as fast as we could."
Teams of divers from several surrounding agencies immediately went into the water. Somehow Leduc ran into trouble diving, and was raced back to shore. But, he could not be saved. We're told Leduc went into cardiac arrest.
Chief Robert Lloyd of the department gave a statement a little before 10:00 PM: "I'm very saddened for the family of this fallen firefighter... The Tiverton fire department and the town of Tiverton give our deepest sympathies."
The search for the missing man got back underway at seven-thirty Monday morning

http://cms.firehouse.com/content/article/article.jsp?id=60450&sectionId=46

Nearly 20 New York City firefighters are recovering from injuries suffered in a blaze that consumed the top floor of an apartment building.
Fire officials say that 15 firefighters had minor injuries Friday and four were hurt more seriously, but that their injuries are not life-threatening. Two civilians were treated for minor injuries.
The blaze began in Brooklyn in the space between the building's roof and the ceiling of the top floor.
The fire spread to the entire sixth floor in an hour, spewing smoke throughout the neighborhood. It was brought under control about two hours later.
The Fire Department says about 250 firefighters were sent to the scene
